We (DW and myself) checked into HHI yesterday afternoon. Checked in around 1:00 and our 1BR unit was ready. Check in went very smoothly. Unfortunately when we went to unit, I immediately saw it was a HA unit; so we went back to front desk and they changed us to another unit in main lodge, no problem at all. Very nice unit with view of marsh and trees (unit on left side of building, second floor). No problems with unit except for two light bulbs that are out. Will drop a note at front desk as we leave this morning about that. No big deal. Went to beach house yesterday afternoon and walked beach. A little cool but it is supposed to warm up today and rest of week. Then went to Publix to get some groceries (mainly the staples - beer, breakfast food, etc.); we don't do much cooking when down here. Ate at Hudsons last night and I had a bucket of oysters. Absolutely delicious. I love steamed oysters. DW had steamed shrimp which she said was good also. Plan to go to Harbour Town this morning and probably have lunch at Crazy Crab. Then perhaps go out and sit out on beach some. Not sure what we will do for supper. Any recommendations for something not seafood and maybe medium priced?

If anyone has any questions, I'll be glad to try to answer them. We did sign up for shrimp boil tommorrow night. Saw B'lou and Shadow as we were coming in. Didn't realize Shadow is deaf.

Thanks for your report -- have been watching the boards for HH news -- we check in on 4/9 for our fifth annual visit. I know it has been cool there and is supposed to stay warm. We cannot wait -- my eldest has had a countdown to HH over his desk from the 100 day mark, and we are only 13 days away now!

One place we always eat is Just Pasta at Coligny. They make fresh pasta -- you choose the type you want and then the sauce you want. We go there every year and then follow it up with a Rita's Ice at the same plaza.

Is the resort full -- any good activities? Any food events with Chef Gordon? If you see him, tell him the Stryker's say hi and we will see him in 2 weeks!

Keep us posted and have a great time!

Thanks for the tip about Just Pasta. Will check it out tonight. Do you know anything about Big Bamboo Cafe at Coligny? Resort doesn't seem crowded at all. In fact, it is very quiet and peacefull this morning. Don't know about food events with Chef Gordon. They are having shrimp boil tommorrow night at beach house. Looking forward to that.

We also like the Earl of Sandwich at Coligny. No, it's nothing like the Earl of Sandwich at Downtown Disney, but they do have great burgers and sandwiches! Big downside is that it's also a bar and can sometimes be a bit smokey. :smokin: Just depends on when you go, I guess!

I'm so jealous -- We're long overdue for a trip to Hilton Head and your report is going to drive me nuts! But please, keep it coming!!!

Have heard of the Big Bamboo, but have not been there. This time we want to get to Signe's and The Sea Shack. Here is a website about HH restaurants I discovered yesterday. Not sure when it was done. Have a great day -- keep us posted.

That's where we want to eat next time too-Signe's and Sea Shack. The stuffed French Toast that Rachel Ray was eating looked too good. Please do keep the reports coming. March is always our month for HHI, but this year DS decided to get married (how inconsiderate!) so we can't go until (I hope) November. So let me live through your reports!

Simba's Mom -- I always remember reading your posts before we would be making our trek to HH. I think last year you may have been one of the last (if not the last) ones to have had A Private Affair -- am I correct? We were supposed to be doing it last April for our fourth time, and other people were getting emails to cancel their's. I was holding out hope, wondering if Chef Gordon would do it for us since we were annual "regulars", and then we got our disappointing email that we were not going to be able to do it. He did not have a food event even that week, and it looks like there will be none this time either! Wish they would utilize his culinary skills more there.

I will keep you posted about our trip in a few weeks, I bet November is a great time to go -- my kids are bugging me to go for Thanksgiving. Too short a break to drive, and checked the airfares and they were outrageous.

I'm glad you're having a good time!
we're going the end of April and I cannot wait!!
Do they have activities with the naturalist..specifically the beach nature walk?
Also, how much is the dolphin cruise?

Glad to hear you are having a good time! I bet the weather is nice today.
We are looking forward to being there for Spring Break between 4/17 and 4/21 !!!

Thanks for the report- glad all is well. We have to wait almost 4 months for another HH trip! :)

Enjoy the rest of your stay!

Evening update. It's been just a nice, slow, lazy day. Finally ventured out around 11:00 after a walk around the marina. Drove down to Harbour Town and looked around there. Nothing really new, except they are putting up the bleachers for the MCI Heritage Classic golf tournament. Saw some dolphins off the end of the pier at Harbour Town. Then drove over to South Beach and had lunch at the Salty Dog. Had a great fried oyster sandwich. Then came back to resort, got our stuff and went over to beach. Didn't stay too long as it was very breezy out on beach and just a tad too cool to stay long. Hopefully Wednesday will be a better day for sitting on beach. Came back to resort and sat out on deck for a while reading. DW has been watching TV. Walked over to marina area again, drooling at the boats. Was hoping the outdoor bar at San Miguels was open, but it wasn't. Not sure where we will eat dinner. Kind of tired of seafood. Either Big Bamboo, San Miguels or Wreck of Salty Dog. We'll see what we're in mood for in an hour or so. We saw some kayakers out a little while ago and saw someone going out on a Dolphin Cruise earlier. Tommorrow we plan to drive over to Savannah. Hope to go thru Mercer House (just love the Midnight book). Had planned on having lunch at Mrs. Wilkes boarding house, but since we're doing the Shrimp Boil tommorrow night, not sure we want to eat that big a lunch. Might eat at Paula Deans instead or we like the hamburgers at Tona Roma's also. Once again, we'll see what we're in the mood for. Unfortunately my mother's doctor called me a little while ago (I handle all my mothers medications, etc.). So I had to call the pharmacists and check on a prescription for her. And then had to call DB to go by and pick up prescription. Oh well, guess you're never completely on vacation. Right now it is absolutely gorgeous looking out on the marsh with the sun and clear sky. I told DW I wish we could stay down here permanently and she agreed. That would be one huge add-on for sure :).

I've eaten at Marley's the past two trips and really enjoyed it for a change of pace. We love seafood, but do tire of it after two or three big meals. That added a little variety to our usual fare. We also had lunch at Signe's. It was great too!

Thanks for the update!!! Please, keep em coming!! Can't wait to hear about your trip to Savannah....we are trying to decide if we will try it also. :)

I am enjoying your trip reports. We head down on May 20 and I am really looking forward to it. We are also hoping to go to Savannah and have a meal at Paula Deans.

Can't wait to hear about your day today!!!!

Having a wonderful time reading what you guys are doing while I pass the time away until we are there!!! :hourglass

5 PM Update From HHI. Well let's see what have we done since I last posted. Last night we ended up eating dinner at San Miguels (right next to marina). We really enjoyed this place. We love Mexican food and I know alot of folks would say this isn't authentic Mexican, but we really liked it. I had a Steak Fajita Burrito that was very good and DW had the Chile Relleno combination and it was delicious (wish I had ordered it myself). That along with a couple of Coronas and I was very happy. Had fried ice cream for dessert which was great also. After dragging ourselves back to the room and drooling over the fancy boats a long the way we stayed in for the rest of the night watching TV. Up early this morning. Had breakfast at Signe's. Had the blueberry stuffed french toast which was good, but not what I thought it was going to be. Signe's french toast is baked, which is unusual IMO. Don't get me wrong, it was good and I can understand why Rachel Ray (sp?) liked it; but I would pass on it next time. Went back home and left our leftovers in kitchen and then off to Savannah.

We broke down this time and did the Old Towne Trolley tour. Usually, we just drive down to river front area and park and walk around. But we wanted to hear someone talk some about what we were seeing. Tour was $23/person with on and off priviledges. Got off on Bull St. and walked over to Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House for lunch. If it seems like all we've done this trip is eat, you would be right. We had to wait an hour to get into Mrs. Wilkes, but boy was it worth it. If you've never eaten here you are missing a treat. It is southern cooking served family style. You are seated at a table for ten with total strangers, who quickly become your friends. The food is amazing. Okay, here is what we had (that I can remember) - fried chicken, BBQ pork, mashed potatoes, rice, mac and cheese, butter beans, green beans, corn, stewed okra, turnip greens, rutabagas, slaw, sliced tomatoes, cajun rice with sausage, blackeye peas, beef stew, squash, gravy, bisquits and for dessert banana pudding or strawberries and excellent iced tea. Basically you sit down and start passing dishes around and eat until you are stuffed. Then when done, you take your dirty plate and glass back to kitchen and pay $15/person as you leave. We are from North Carolina and I was raised on southern cooking and this was better than my grandmother's cooking.

Next, we waddled out and headed back towards river front, taking pictures along the way of the old houses. Stopped and looked at the Cathederal of St. John. Absolutely gorgeous. I could not believe the stained glass windows. Took trolley down to river front and walked around there some. Then trolley back to visitor center, got car and drove back to HHI. I then took camera and took some pictures of our home away from home. It's been a little cool still this afternoon and I am a little concerned about the shrimp boil at the beach house which starts in 30 minutes. I can't believe we're getting ready to eat another all you can eat meal today. But we signed up for it, so we're going to do it. Well that's it for now, I'll post about the shrimp boil when we get back. I know some serious dieting is going to be in order when we get back home.

PS - Has anyone noticed that the Disney Hilton Head Resort sign is no longer out on 278 Business? There used to be a sign right before you get to the Shelter Cove stop light. But it is no longer there. I wonder why they removed it?

Your info has been great!!! Thank you so much. We are heading down for our first trip in 2 weeks and we are enjoying your play by play. We have taken notes on your restraunt suggestions too!! :)

Where else are you planning to eat on the island? Sea Shack? Captain's Seafood? The Jazz Corner (I think that's what it's called)? Old Fort Pub? It's Greek to Me (a great place if you like Greek food)? Somewhere else? I love to hear your food reports. Oh-and is there still an ice cream place close to the resort (I forgot the name)?
