5 PM Update From HHI. Well let's see what have we done since I last posted. Last night we ended up eating dinner at San Miguels (right next to marina). We really enjoyed this place. We love Mexican food and I know alot of folks would say this isn't authentic Mexican, but we really liked it. I had a Steak Fajita Burrito that was very good and DW had the Chile Relleno combination and it was delicious (wish I had ordered it myself). That along with a couple of Coronas and I was very happy. Had fried ice cream for dessert which was great also. After dragging ourselves back to the room and drooling over the fancy boats a long the way we stayed in for the rest of the night watching TV. Up early this morning. Had breakfast at Signe's. Had the blueberry stuffed french toast which was good, but not what I thought it was going to be. Signe's french toast is baked, which is unusual IMO. Don't get me wrong, it was good and I can understand why Rachel Ray (sp?) liked it; but I would pass on it next time. Went back home and left our leftovers in kitchen and then off to Savannah.
We broke down this time and did the Old Towne Trolley tour. Usually, we just drive down to river front area and park and walk around. But we wanted to hear someone talk some about what we were seeing. Tour was $23/person with on and off priviledges. Got off on Bull St. and walked over to Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House for lunch. If it seems like all we've done this trip is eat, you would be right. We had to wait an hour to get into Mrs. Wilkes, but boy was it worth it. If you've never eaten here you are missing a treat. It is southern cooking served family style. You are seated at a table for ten with total strangers, who quickly become your friends. The food is amazing. Okay, here is what we had (that I can remember) - fried chicken, BBQ pork, mashed potatoes, rice, mac and cheese, butter beans, green beans, corn, stewed okra, turnip greens, rutabagas, slaw, sliced tomatoes, cajun rice with sausage, blackeye peas, beef stew, squash, gravy, bisquits and for dessert banana pudding or strawberries and excellent iced tea. Basically you sit down and start passing dishes around and eat until you are stuffed. Then when done, you take your dirty plate and glass back to kitchen and pay $15/person as you leave. We are from North Carolina and I was raised on southern cooking and this was better than my grandmother's cooking.
Next, we waddled out and headed back towards river front, taking pictures along the way of the old houses. Stopped and looked at the Cathederal of St. John. Absolutely gorgeous. I could not believe the stained glass windows. Took trolley down to river front and walked around there some. Then trolley back to visitor center, got car and drove back to HHI. I then took camera and took some pictures of our home away from home. It's been a little cool still this afternoon and I am a little concerned about the shrimp boil at the beach house which starts in 30 minutes. I can't believe we're getting ready to eat another all you can eat meal today. But we signed up for it, so we're going to do it. Well that's it for now, I'll post about the shrimp boil when we get back. I know some serious dieting is going to be in order when we get back home.
PS - Has anyone noticed that the Disney Hilton Head Resort sign is no longer out on 278 Business? There used to be a sign right before you get to the Shelter Cove stop light. But it is no longer there. I wonder why they removed it?
