Ok, after a lot of reading and researching my ownself I have discovered some things about these two. What are your thoughts?

Aspartame should have never been put on the market. It was turned down 8 times before it was slipped into the foods in 1983. This is a scary thought about how what it turns into in our bodies: Methanol breaks down into formic acid and formaldehyde in the body -- YIKES!! No more of that for me

This is a good article on how aspartame was put into the food and diet sodas: http://www.nexusmagazine.com/articles/aspartame.html

Splenda has shocking truths also, it contains 1% of arsenic. http://www.foodanddiet.com/NewFiles/splenda.html

My research all started when I started reading 3 books, and I will tell you, it has changed the why I feel and look, A LOT BETTER

I've always stayed away from artificial sweeteners because they taste like metal to me. I'd rather have real sugar and just watch how much of it I have.

What are the 3 books? I'd be interested in checking those out.

My sister in law tells me how bad aspartame is. Right after she told me that you get cancer by using secret anti-perspirant. They get an INSTANT headache as soon as any aspartame touches their lips. Oh and you should choose "real" butter over margarine or any substitute because real butter doesn't have the additives the other stuff has. (but let's ignore the bad stuff in the real butter!) :rolleyes1

Oh - edited to add, she also makes the "Neiman Marcus" cookies - and tells the story about the lady at the restaurant every time!

I agree that Aspartame is bad....for me. I think, like anything, it affects everyone differently, and there are some people that it doesn't affect at all. I get headaches from it, so I avoid it.

ok, the one book I will have to do this: skinny -- I listened to the author on a local radio station here, they were speaking of aspartame, and I was like I should check this book out, and WOW what an awakening.

Then I started reading The Seven Pillars of Health which also lead me to another book -- written by someone who use to work for the FDA, and that book is What the FDA is not telling you

Also CNN does a special about once a week, American Killer Diets, this is a link http://www.turnerinfo.com/newsitem.aspx?P=CNN&CID01=2e6d0a6c-34b1-4683-8dc6-a7a0810b3097

I'll have to go read that about Splenda. I use Splenda in my coffee every morning. (3 of them! Eek!) Otherwise I don't use it, except occasionally in my water when I have a few lemons.

And I agree about using butter, LOL, I always want real butter whenever I have the option. There is always real butter in my fridge. "The better the butter the better the batter."

I no longer touch any artificial sweetener whenever I can help it. I stopped after I realized that using aspertame was actually causing me to GAIN weight and to have a hard time keeping it off. It makes you feel hungry and it also changes your metabolism so that everything digests slower. Great combo, huh? I would love to get rid of high fructose corn syrup completely out of my diet, but that one is a LOT harder for me to do. Though aspertame and sucrolose seem to be in everything now too :(

I don't trust them anymore. I'd rather have plain sugar as well.

Artificial sweeteners are eeeeevil, nasty stuff. I don't particularly care for margarine, either, but don't avoid it like I do the sweeteners. I won't buy it for home use, but if it's in something MIL makes (greenbeans, let's say) I'll eat it, since it happens infrequently. The sweeteners, particularly asparteme hurt my stomach.

Let's not forget that many brands of white sugar are bleached with bone char, which is, well, you can figure that out. :rolleyes1

We use Sugar in the Raw for drinks, cooking, etc. Of course, it's very difficult, if not impossible, to eliminate all white sugar from your diet, unless you cook every single thing from scratch, but we make a conscious effort to minimize it in our diets.

Splenda's website claims that it's kosher, as does Nutrasweet's. I guess that's something.

I can give you a few suggestions here. I started shopping more and more organics, and keep Trans Fat out and those syrups. I know that it is hard to cut EVERYTHING out, this is a day by day process.

At lunch I have salad with Annie's Raspberry Vingarette, or anything Amy's in the frozen organic section.

Since I have started that, it went downhill from there, a couple items a week to start the change over and yhou WILL feel a lot better, I know I have -- good luck :thumbsup2

The butter thing is true:rotfl: Margarine can have less calories but more "bad" fats than real butter. Just depends on what aspect you're avoiding.

I have a friend who is allergic to aspertane. But I've got tons who have never reacted to it at all.

But the Secret antiperspirant is a new one to me.

I figure EVERYTHING is bad for you nowadays. So I ignore 80% of the info and just try to stick to basics. Besides they always talk about adding 10 years to your life.....but it's the last 10 years...those are the worst so I'll just keep eating what I want, thank you very much.:lmao:

I agree with this. I was a big artificial sweetner person until I got pregnant and then I just went without. I sometimes put sugar in my coffee and I rarely drink soda. I am surprised at the level of aspartame is in a lot of foods that we eat though.

I went back to using Stevia, a natural sweetner which in the books I have been reading is ok to have. I read about it a long time ago in Atkins, and when it came out that Atkins not good for you I stopped. I have went back to it now though.

Stevia can be found at GNC and I have seen it at Trader Joe's

I said good-bye to artificial sweeteners for good this year. They were causing my stomach area to make weird noises. Similar to a stomach growling, but a bit more weird.

I knew about the Aspartame. I am severely allergic to it. A friend told me about the formaldehyde thing after I said I couldn't have it.

As a result of the Aspartame allergy, I became extremely leery of Splenda anyway. The bad part is that I still drank a lot of soda. Now that I cut back on it (and as a result, the high fructose corn syrup), I've lost weight and feel better on that front.

My mindset is I'm going to die from something. I'd rather have the butter that tastes good. :teeth:

Hey, look how long they told us that if we used Sweet-n-Low we would get cancer and then "oops! maybe not!" They had to find a new artifical sweetener to pick on ;)

I used something years back...I wish I could remember what it was called but I think it was similar to Stevia or had it in it. I'll have to look into that.
