So, some more information from my husband who is stationed overseas in Okinawa right now.
First of all, he says the situation in Japan is BAD. Like, worse than they are admitting freely. He gets a lot of intelligence that we are not privvy to here, as the military has a strong base presence in mainland Japan. Yesterday, he said "stuff is about to get crazy over here."
So, US Forces Japan has issued new guidance to ALL military members stationed in Japan/Okinawa:
They are not permitted to shake hands or make physical contact with co workers or members of the general public at this point (outside of immediate family).
They may soon begin checking temperatures at the base entry gates, for everyone trying to access base (this is already being done at US military bases in Korea)
Okinawa schools are closing early for spring break. They have closed immediately, and for a period of 3 weeks (their spring break was supposed to be in 2 weeks from now, but they are closing early). DOD Schools on base will likely follow suit and close as well.
It is possible that those servicemembers who were approved for leave that takes them off island will be revoked for a period of time. In addition, off base liberty may be revoked in the short term.
Just wanted to pass along the measures being taken by our government, on behalf of servicemembers in the Pacific region. This is a good indicator of what may eventually come to pass here stateside, if this virus begins to pop up around the country.
He was scheduled to attend a 2 week training in Korea beginning next week. That has, thankfully, been cancelled altogether. He is supposed to come home in a month for our kid's spring break week, but that is an uncertainty at this point, unfortunately.
He told me last night that we should cancel our Tokyo
Disneyland trip for late May. He has no confidence in Japan's ability to get this situation under control by then.
