Are you feeding your dog grain-free dog food? Anyone making the switch to regular now?

The grain free Orijen I use is also listed as one of the top dog foods and is 5 stars. It also has DCM cases. I have a call out to the vet and will hopefully get some advice on whether to switch food or not.
Let us know what they say!

I wonder how long it will take to get any kind of scientific data to figure out if there is an actual link? Seems to be such a mess of information regarding dog food these days.

We've fed Diamond Natural Grain Free for years (cheapest I could find for the quality, per the above mentioned website), but am now looking at the different formulations within DN to find the one with fewest legumes/potatoes. Unfortunately our dog with the weakest stomach loves their whitefish and sweet potato, which has potatoes and peas in the first five ingredients :(.

I still feel that it's a quality product at an excellent price, but am willing to keep an open mind on the new research.

So yesterday I said that I wasn't going to switch, but I decided that since he is getting older that I should at least investigate what might be better for a senior dog (I am in denial on that too, but that's another story). Pretty much all of the recommendations for seniors are grain free, there were just a couple grain inclusive varieties, one of those had three different pea/potato ingredients as top ingredients, so that was out! I bought a bag of Purina Pro Plan Bright Mind yesterday, and started slowly introducing it today. I also contacted our current brand and they don't recommend his specific food formula for senior dogs anyway due to the higher fat content, so I might as well switch him, or at least diversify a bit. Thanks to everyone here for sharing their thoughts and foods. Hopefully, he tolerates his new kibbles.

We have been using Victor grain free (salmon sweet potato variety) for a couple of years at the advice of the vet who told us to avoid grain and chicken. One of the dogs has digestion and ear issues and the food has heped so I am hesitant to switch but will talk to the vet about it.

Google this article. Actions like this are the reason I have lost faith that the FDA and large pet food companies have our pets best interest at heart.

This is why I like Dog Food Advisor. They - via the FDA (so I'm not sure what the author of that article is saying since the FDA was involved) - notified the public about the toxic Vitamin D levels back in December of 2018. I got an email about it from DFA too. (And the Vitamin D problem was one of the ones I mentioned in my first post on this thread.)

I agree about losing faith in dog foods, though. I lost it long ago when they had the melamine problem, but it was sealed for me a few years ago when it was discovered that some foods had euthanizing agents in them like barbituates, and pets died from eating them as a result. That's when I learned about rendering plants, again, from Dog Food Advisor. (Not going to post link here but please do google it.) It is hard to believe this goes on here.

There are even some problems with treats. I am very careful what I buy.

I am not sure what the answer is.

Thanks for putting in the links couldn’t figure that out. The melamine problem nearly killed my sister’s dog. I have turned to Answers for my crew for now. Not sure if this is the long term solution but at least in the short run the dogs and cats are doing well.
