Are we using masks or not now?

I totally agree that it is imperative that we all follow the guidelines as stated .. hand washing and social distancing are paramount . However if our government and the US government are asking us to wear masks now based on the latest data, I’m going to do it. It’s one more small thing I can do to make others safer and there’s no reason not to.

When disney re-opens you'll have to pick out your magic bands ..... and your face masks. Actually, I could see them having some cute disney themed ones custom made, if it ends up coming down to people or CMs having to wear them in the beginning. I'd order one now!

I have made some of these since our our chief medical officer now recommends wearing non-medical masks in public places to prevent us from infecting somebody else. They also recommend washing after every use.

I watched a very interesting episode yesterday on the DIS Unplugged. There was alot of talk about how Disney ( and all parks ) will look after our lives resume. Our new normal will probably look a whole lot different than what it was before.

For anyone who wants to make a TRULY new-sew mask without needing to buy any special materials or use elastics or ties you can use a t-shirt to create this super fashionable model!!

This video has an idea of what proportions to use that could be scaled up or down for anyone, including kids.

OR there's this version that is provided on THIS PAGE from the Guardian for 3 different new-sew masks. It has a "pattern" of sorts for this version and 2 others.

Just watched the first of what i imagine will be many examples of WHY telling people they should consider wearing masks in public isn't a great idea.

I was doing dishes and from my kitchen window i saw 2 young couples meet at the corner, hug and walk down the street, hand-in-hand. They're all wearing brightly coloured masks though ....

Let’s assume those two couples were going on that walk with or without masks. They don‘t appear to be following social distancing guidelines so that’s on them . If they cough or sneeze near an elderly woman in a grocery store though .. they are less likely to pass their potential Covid on to her because of the mask. That’s the point of them. I doubt the masks are the only reason they felt safe enough to meet up for a walk . And even if they were.. well their ignorance only hurts them . The mask is the layer of protection for the immune compromised person they pass.
I know the mask isn’t protecting me but it’s going to protect others if I’m infected. I have to respectfully disagree that its a bad idea. If it’s one more layer of protection to protect the vulnerable how can it be bad?

The only way to get this under control is to stop the spread from people who are spreading the virus before they are showing symptoms and that means masks. I agree! I just think the public needs more concrete information about the whys, hows & whens.

What i was referring to, and obviously wasn't able to clearly convey, is that we haven't been given clear information to follow. I was trying hard not to add details that didn't belong in my post but perhaps they DO belong here. I know the one kid, she actually lives in our complex and when i mentioned to our neighbours that i had seen her the comment was "yeah, but it's ok if they wear masks now"

It would be nice if we were able to find easy to read information regarding what constitutes an effective mask, how to make one, how to wear it, how to take it off and then clean it. I've spent far too much time sitting in my dining room surrounded by material trying to figure out what pattern to use .....

My apologies Donald. Now I understand better. Yep I 100% agree with you. They need to be educating people on the proper use of masks and make it part of a very clear overall message. So far I haven’t heard a thing since the initial announcements . This is the time to blanket the news and social media with a clear message .

Yes @Donald - my hero , I've seen several people on social media comment that they need a home made mask as they are compromised and it will help protect them when they go out. Or they haven't gone out because they are higher risk, but a mask would help them go out. I think too many people think they are protected by wearing a home made mask, which they aren't and think it's ok to do things they've been avoiding because they are protected now with a home made mask.

There are people in my condo who are making masks for other residents. They are requesting a contribution to the local food bank as “payment”.

My mom has started making masks in 3 sizes and she puts them out at the end of their driveway on a table for the neighbors to take for free! She's distributed 43 of them so far and she just started a few days ago!

I made 3 today, one for kiddo and two different styles for me. One fits better but took longer to make than the other. I have no idea if they will help or not, I have not done any sewing in ages so it was a bit of a struggle lol. I used 3 of kiddo's old t-shirts. I guess I'll start wearing them when I go to the store, but I don't think I need them when I walk the dog. I didn't put in the pocket to add a filter, nor could I figure out how to put the wire over the nose (though I have lots of pipecleaners that would work). My sewing skills are not up to par I guess!

A doctor was explaining that the cloth mask does stop Covid particles from getting out but what it does is really slow them down as the air has to pass through the cloth meaning they can't go as far when they do escape. That and some of the larger particles will get stopped.

When I pulled out my sewing machine I found a bunch of fleece cloths I had planned to turn into baby wipes, when my 10-year-old was in diapers... obviously I haven't sewed much in awhile, or cleaned up the basement!
