A couple of years ago, we had a long-standing reservation at the Contemporary for a SMOKE-FREE room. Much to our dismay, even though the door was labeled NO SMOKING ... the room reeked!

Are the DVC home resort non-smoking rooms really smoke free?

As with any hotel room, WDW or not, a smoke free room should be just that. However, if for some reason you checked into a non-smoking room only to find that it smelled of smoke, it would be wise to ask to be moved to another non-smoking room. They do have machines that they can bring in to filter the smoke out of the air, and restore it to non-smoking again.

the staff at the Contemporary DID offer to do both of those things to 'remedy' the situation.

My question ( or poll ) was: How many DVC members have had similar experiences ... (and where)?

We've had the same experience once, last year, a studio at BWV's. We checked in later in the day, and no other studios were available. They promised they would have another one the next day.

The room was clearly a no-smoking room and the guests before us had simply ignored this and stunk the place up.

Disney brought a machine down right away and started it. We went out for several hours. When we came back the smell was probably 90% gone. By bedtime it was almost completely gone.

By the next day the room was fine so we did not have to change rooms after all.

I believe Disney did the best they could in this situation. :)

Now as far as the 'guest' who proceeded us......that's another story.

We checked into a no smoking roomm Jan 2nd and it reeked of smoke. We didn't say anything because we arrived after 7 pm and it was a "one niter". We were moving "home" to BWV the next day for the remainder of our vacation. We did mention it at checkout so the problem could be dealt with before the next arrival.

not everyone has had an A+ experience on every visit to a DVC resort.

From reading the comments on this discussion board, one is inclined to believe that the program has almost no flaws. That would be close to impossible ...

As always, thanks for your input!

A funny side note. When we were on the Magic last Spring, my DH took a bridge tour. The have a very sophisticated fire warning sytem. They told him they can tell when someone lights up in any of the cabins. They just send a CM done there and tell them to put it out. Wouldn't that give you the creeps. Big Brother is watching.

Do you suppose that this sort of technology will ever find its way into non-smoking hotel ( or DVC home resort ) rooms?

Highly doubtful, qdog. The Disney Cruise Line has different standards to build the stateroom specifications to as a fire inside one of the cabins could be very deadly while the ship is out at sea. It is done as a safety precaution rather than a non-smoking preference. The WDW Resorts are typical hotels in that they have some rooms available as smoking, and the majority as non-smoking. :)
