I have a friend that gets motion sickness while the boat is still in dock. She puts a little round patch behind her ear and she's fine in any weather. She was on the Alaskan with me and since we were on the inaugural cruise we had to take the outside passage north and it was SO rough. She was fine.

I can find out what they are and how to get them if anyone is interested. Let me know.

Years ago my mom and I did a roller coaster tour of the US - we did some 100 coasters in 2 weeks. By the end I was feeling the issue in my ears and tried a scopolomine patch (that little round one)...nasty side effect - in 2 days I was blind. Literally. I couldn't see my hand in front of my face. I panicked just a tad. I called a pharmacy (we were in Texas at that point) and asked about it - seems like 1 in 10,000 have that little effect. It took 4 days for my vision to return once I removed the patch.

My suggestion is that if someone is going to try that patch, get a sample from somewhere and TRY IT AT HOME FIRST. One doesn't want to go blind (even temporarily) while on vacation.

I don't recall any rough seas on the first Alaska...did we have rough water?

I would be interested!... Thanks!.. I don't want to send a day !

I always use the Scopolamine patch when I travel. I can get sea sick in the bathtube! The only side effect that I get is dry mouth. One big no no is that when you touch the patch itself DO NOT touch your eyes before you've washed your hands. It can dilate your pupils and casue blurry vision. I've never heard of actual blindness before, that must have been so scary. If I didn't wear the patch there is no way I could even fly, let alone cruise. I've tried all of the other stuff, wrist bands, ginger tablets, bonine, dramamine, watching the horizon. So, for me, Scopolamine is a God send, I don't travel without them.

FYI, one patch is only good for 3 days, so you have to alternate the right side to to left and visa versa every 3 days.

Hope this helps. Just my experience of course.

I'm a lot behind in reading these posts. I apologize in advance for asking a question that I'm sure was answered. I'm in group 7 for the FE list. I see there are children and was wondering:confused3 if there is a list of the ages of the children corresponding to the DIS names of the adults? I definitely don't want to leave the children out.

Thanks,
Bev

I have questions regarding tips for excursions. Does everyone tip for their excursion? If so, how much? My excursions will all be through DCL so they will be charged to my KTTW card. I hadn't planed on bringing cash with me on the excursions, just my cc. Now I think I need to rethink that!

Even more important (at least in my eyes LOL,) does anyone know of a WalMart close to any of our docks? Whenever I am in Hawaii, I like to go to WalMart to stock up on my chocolate covered macadamia nuts to bring back as souveniers. With the excursions, it looks like I may only have time to hunt for them in Maui and Oahu. I thought I had read awhile back on cruise critic that WalMart's and Hilo Hatties have shuttles running from the ports to their stores. Can anyone confirm this and possibly say how much the shuttles run? TIA!

We can stand outside "our" door & toast to it? :rotfl:

.....
I feel like I was struck with a little bit of Hawaiian magic last night. My mom and dad (both passed now, sadly) went to Hawaii 38 years ago. My mom brought back a full-length Hawaiian dress (which was actually made there). I never saw her wear it, but when she passed I felt like I needed to keep it. Well, I found it in the back of my closet yesterday and tried it on. Amazingly, it fit me (and it looks like new even after so long)! So now I need to decide when to wear it...luau, dinner, Palo? Thanks, Mom :cloud9:.

Oh, what a sweet story....bittersweet is maybe more accurate, but it sounds wonderful to wear that. :flower3: I love the fact that it has so much meaning for you and also I love the vintage Hawaiian clothing. I have been doing a bit of cruise shopping that's probably different from most people....vintage Hawaiian on ebay! Looking forward to wearing my "new" finds even though I know nothing of their history, and really looking forward to seeing you in your special dress.

Candy good for sea sickness?

Haha yes, it is ginger candy....vegan, even....!! But I'm also bringing some "chews" that my old home town was known for...a local company that has sort of made it big. I think it helped that Disney started carrying them at DCA a while back, as representing a part of CA history.

Oh my - how terrifying for you!! I know a lot of people have great success with the patches, but I have heard that if someone touches their eyes with the chemical on them, it causes blurry visions & headaches, but wow - the blindness must have been so scary.

But also gotta say.....a roller coaster tour? Awesome!!!

We usually give the driver a couple bucks and then a bit more to the guide, depending on the length of the excursion (& how much we like them!)...sometimes just $5 for the 2 of us, and maybe a couple more when we have DS with us. The most we ever tipped was $10 and that was for an all-day trip with a guide who went above & beyond. But yes, they do appreciate tips & we like to go prepared with at least a few bucks...nothing too extravagant. :hippie:

ETA....this is for DCL excursions. For private ones the tips are higher usually, but for these prepaid ones, we don't give a tip that's a percentage of the trip or anything - just a thank you token I guess....

I had that patch on also but still had to miss the Champagne Girls...it wasn't enough for once  We also use the nausea bands but the stretchy ones and they work great also - normally. I think for the average person either one would be a great help...it is just that I take a large amount of medication that occasionally bothers me and it seems to think rough seas means they all have to bother me at once ;)

Yes we had very rough seas on the inaugural the first full day at sea because Captain had to go the outside passage because it was his first cruise and not allowed to do the inner passage until second trip or some such thing... As a NW native it really angered me at the time because since that is supposedly a hard and fast maritime rule for that area Disney should have seen that he got the experience ahead of time. Considering the 1000's of ships that leave here for Alaska every month they could have arranged something with a fishing or shipping company that has ships that huge for him to do a run for the necessary certification. But at the least we could have been told that our particular cruise was going a slightly different route and we could have prepared more for the rough seas.

Sorry... I have now vented. Been wanting to do that for almost a year :confused3 But as a note to myself I am going to take anti nausea medication the first day as we set out as a preventive :) not wasting any more time in my bed then necessary!!

Vacations to go just sent out their weekly newsletter and are offering cabins for sale on our cruise...... we must have some still empty it looks like...
Cheapest Inside $2,265
Cheapest Oceanview $2,550
Cheapest Balcony $3,975

Mother's Day dinner is a Semi-formal so you must wear it then....And wear it also for Palo if you'd like. I'd pass on the luau...sitting on the ground etc......How very special for you...

I think you should wear it and I also think you should let everyone know your story. It is a great tribute.

Thank you both so much. Oh, and thanks for the advice about the luau...I didn't know we had to sit on the floor (and at my age, this could be a bit of a problem :scared1:).

If you're going to the Old Lahaina Luau with Disney, that show has two seating options - "traditional" seating on the ground (on a mat), and seating at conventional tables and chairs.

If Disney did book the whole luau, I'd imagine you would have the choice of where to sit. If they didn't, I don't know how to ensure you get a table and chair, although I'd imagine anyone who actually requires a chair will get one. I won't be wearing a dress to it at any rate, unless there are pants under it.

:scared1:OH MY, how horrible. :scared1:

We use meclizine for sea sickness. We had a chance to even experience how it works with high swells when we were on our EB PC cruise in 2005. We encountered Hurricane Hillary when she took a different path from what was projected. We were not sick but so many CM's and guests were. The moral of that story is to take it even if you don't get seasick just in case you have an unexpected storm. We loved the experience and welcome high seas, :cool1:.

We were on that cruise. I got queezy during a DVC presentation, but was better in time for Palo dinner.

WOO HOO!!!!! WE GOT OUR SHIRTS!!!! Val, they are fabulous, so nice and light. We are in love!:love: And we are all going to look SOOOOO good!

Sorry for shouting, but I was very excited to get the shirts. The fit is also excellent, at least for me. I was a little hesitant to order the M, since I'm not exactly dainty (!), but it's perfect. Imagine! Personally designed and produced just for us! Fantastic! :cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

We've started using Ginger Root for seasickness/motion sickness.
I had used the scop-patch but the side-effects were not worth it anymore.
I heard about Ginger Root pills from a friend and decided to try it. So far about 6 or 7 cruises later it has worked for all my family.
We start taking 1 caplet in the morning and 1 caplet in the evening about 4 days before sailing and continue throughout the cruise.
Normally I even have some stomach issues but the ginger also helps with digestion so that is another bonus.
That reminds me to check the bottle I have in the medicine cabinet to make sure I have enough and check the expiration date!!!

We were on the infamous EBTA in 2007.

DS and I had a great time.

DH and DD didn't fare as well. They did feel better after they put on the scopolamine patches but never quite up to snuff til the rough seas subsided.

So after Woodys' report of rough waters on his recent trip to Hawaii, I'll be sending DH to the doctor for a scopolamine prescription.

Let the good times 'roll'

Our shirts just arrived!!! Thanks Val, they look AMAZING! My son's shirt fits a bit better than mine, does anyone have a size small they want to trade for a medium size?

The DW and I were on that cruise as well. Just a little rough for a while. Missed Cabo because of it. Went to Manzanilla?? instead.
