Ok here is my thing...

I have a family of 5 that is going to Disney here in a couple of weeks.
I have an infant in a stroller and one that will be 5 who wears leg braces and will have to wear them while we are at Disney.

I have never applied or even thought of getting a temp *Disability* tag until today, so I was wondering for anyone who has any experience with this, is it difficult to get?

I do know that if my son has his braces on from morning until bed his legs are hurting extremely badly, and I dont want him to have to worry about walking too far from a parking spot and getting sore in the middle of Disney...

He goes for a follow up with the Orthoped. the week we leave for Disney and Im sure he wouldnt have a problem filling something out for the BMV....

My question is, is it hard to get a tag for parking from the BMV? We live in Indiana.....

Don't have any clue about Indiana specifically, but I doubt it would be difficult. Check with your local motor vehicle office. They may just need a letter of documentation from your child's doctor, or there may be a specific form the doctor has to fill out. Here in Louisiana, there is a form on which the doctor states the nature of the disability (my dad had a temp tag after major vascular surgery years ago, and I have permanent plates due to paraplegia), if it is temporary or permanent, and if temporary how long it will last.

You can download the application for a handicapped parking permit on the website of the Indiana Department of Motor Vehicles. Fill out the portion that you are able to fill out and there will be a part for the doctor to fill out to certify that there is a disability that qualifies for a handicapped parking permit.

If he is able to step up onto the parking lot tram, parking in the regular lot and using the parking lot tram will actually be the shortest walking distance for each park. The handicapped parking lots are large and are not serviced by any trams. If you end up in one of the far spots in any of the lots, you will end up walking farther than parking un the regular lot. There is more information about parking in the disABILITIES FAQs thread.

Also, you may want to look into renting a stroller for him. Many people with 5 yr olds who do not have any physical challenges feel that walking a whole day at WDW us too far for their children. People estimate they walk between 3 and 9 miles per day at WDW,so ID you don't think he can do that, it's best to rent a stroller. Post #2 of the disABILITIES FAQs thread has more information on stroller rentals. Just having one doesn't mean he has to sir in it all rhe time. You can use the stroller to move between areas and then he can walk around in lines or between attractions in that area.

We had to wait longer than two weeks for them to process my child's disability placard. I would suggest getting this done ASAP or follow Sue's advice above. It really is closer to take the trams then to park in the handicapped spaces.

that's the part I meant to add - do it ASAP

is that only for people on the resort *staying on* we are not staying on the resort and do have shuttle access to the parks, but we were wanting also the convienence of our own vehicle....

No.
The tram is at the parking lot.
Because the parking lots are large, they have trams that stop at the end of the row to pick up passengers and shuttle you to the area right in front of the turnstiles that let you into the park. When you are leaving, a tram will deliver you back to the area where your car is parked.
Strollers are folded and you place them in the tram next to you.
Here's a picture of one of the parking lot trams:

If you don't have a handicapped parking permit and don't think he could step up into the tram, mention that to each CM (Cast Member) you come to as you are being directed to park. They will show you where to park to have the shortest walk. There is more complete information in the disABILITIES FAQs thread.

thanks for the pic. he probably can step up but if its kind of crowded then its hard for him to step up, we have a minivan and sometimes he has problems getting in and out...
