AOL for FREE if you have BYOA or Broadband

OMG! I just got DSL in May (through another company) and was told by AOL that I had to pay $9.95 for AOL access per month AND had to agree to it for one full year or be charged a $20 cancel fee. This also included the 10 hours of dial up (which I couldn't figure out how to use when my DSL was down one day.

I even asked point blank if they had a cheaper plan that didn't include the dial up and I was told no.

I think I need to call and complain. I swear I hate AOL I just dont' want to give up the e-mail I have had for years.

You can use your AOL Mail account for free. I cancelled my AOL account and still have AOL Mail. You just go to www.aol.com and click on AIM/AOL mail and sign in using the same screenname/password, etc. You don't pay anything for it.

Thank you thank you thank you!!!!! I just saved $14.95 a month!!!!

Thanks so much for the info
I just called and they switched me to the free plan
I have been with AOl for 12 years
Since moving to
Northern Wisconsin where there are no AOL local access numbers
I finally went to satellite and have been paying AOL $9.95 a month for BYOA
Now I can spend more $ at Disney!!

:rotfl2:

While this is true, now you can have the best of both worlds and get to use the AOL software to access your mail for free. I hate the platform AOL WEB MAIL uses. I love the AOL software email platform.
(I love it more than g-mail, Outlook or any other email platform I ever used)

I'm glad so many people are getting in on this and I am surprised that some folks were paying 14.99 a month for the exact same thing I was paying 6.95 a month for! (reminds me of airline prices!!)

Anyhow, I think this offer will eventually be given to everyone who brings their own access so I wouldn't worry about not switching right now if you want to hold onto your couple hours of dial up. On the new "free" BYOA plan, you can still dial up if you needed to, and would be charged 2.95/hr.

Just out of curiosity, can someone explain the marketing logic behind this? I mean, how does AOL benefit by continuing to let us use AOL...but now for free, at their expense?

Not complaining...just can't figure it out. And I'm usually good at this stuff. ;)

I'm assuming AOL is keeping you for free so that your still exposed to their advertisers, etc. I told my mom who has Compuserve, she was paying $24.95 a month with BYOA! OMG! She called up and explained to them she wanted to CX, they offered her $4.95, she told them she wanted it free, as she had been paying $25 for 7 years even with her broadband, yikes! Offered her three free months, she is writting in to them tomorrow about it.

My DH has several web sites on aol. If you get on the free plan does everything stay the same? I am reluctant to try to switch because I don't want to lose his web sites.
Sorry if this is OT.

Think of it as a change of pricing plans ($0), not change in service.

Boy, did you open my eyes... i have had cable and now Verizon DSL for a while and have been paying the AARP rate of $11.95 per month. We have a Verizon wireless system - will that make any difference?
If your answer is no- then i am on the phone first thing in the morning. Thanks. Caroline

You will qualify. Call them tonight when it's not busy & you will get right thru.

Me too.

This is the first time I looked at the Budget Board. I was bored and thought I'd look here for some ideas. I can't believe you saved me $14.95 a month.

I'll be back.

I just got this a few hours ago and I'm so happy! :cloud9:
Took less than 5 minutes from the time I heard about it on another board until the time my pricing plan (at keyword: billing) said $0.00!
I don't waste time when it comes to money! :rotfl:

Hmmmmmm, i've got to dig out my stuff to see when I last reduced the price because I agreed to a certain time frame....but i think it might be up.

Then I'm gonna try. Thanks!!! We too have Verizon DSL.

Doesn't matter. We also had that "contract"...null and void! Poof! Gone! Free forever! Yay!

So, let me get this straight. I'm currently Paying 14.95 for AOL and I also have cable service. (my son didn't want me to get rid of AOL in the past because there was something he needed for college) If I get the free AOL the only difference is my 0 monthly fee - I'll still get my screens and e-mail the same? Will I still be able to sign on using AOL or do I need to go thru my cable internet probider? Sorry if this is a dumb question. :)

Everything will work exactly the same. The only difference will be the price you pay, the fact that you will have no "backup" dial-up available (I've never used my backup, anyway), and you won't be able to call AOL customer service for assistance with your online connection. Big whoop. You just call your other service provider (DSL, cable, etc.) for help. AOL wouldn't have been any help, anyway! :rotfl: HTH!

Also got in on the deal. I was paying 7.95 now i am getting it for free. Easy, just told them i would like to cancel. They asked why and i told them i have Cable modem and they said they are now offering it for free for people with their own access, already changed on my billing and everything.
