AOL for FREE if you have BYOA or Broadband

on the phone now...I've always gotten so mad about paying $14.95.but I"ve had this screen name forever..............we'll see what happens. :hourglass :hourglass

YIPPEE only 3minutes on hold !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now it's FREE

thank you sooooooooooooooo much!

Thanks for posting this -- as others have mentioned, when I did this a few minutes ago the woman came back on and told me that this was "only available for some customers" and not to me . . . at that point I told her I would cancel and mentioned that I would no longer be viewing the ads, etc., on AOL . . . at that point she said that "since you have been a member for so long" she would get me the free plan.

So be sure you don't cave in if they tell you that you can't do this -- if you access AOL via broadband, they are stealing from you if they keep taking your money!

I got it, my friends got it. Don't let AOL tell you anything else. It is available.

Important AOL Announcement
Changes Are Coming ...
More Choices and Flexibility for Our Members
AOL has always been an all-in-one online solution for our members: a way to connect to the Internet and an entertaining online destination once you're connected.

Now, some of the online services previously available only to members -- such as AOL® email and security features -- will be free to anyone who has their own Internet connection, including any dial-up, cable or DSL connection.

What will this mean for members like you? As long as you still need to connect to the Internet using AOL, nothing will change. You'll continue to get:

Reliable service 24/7 customer support Comprehensive safety and security protection Unlimited email storage, and more If you do at some point choose another provider for your Internet connection, you'll be able to keep your AOL email address and continue to use the AOL software and many of the features and content you've enjoyed as a member.

Sign up for an alert to be first to hear about some exciting new features we'll be announcing in September.

I was so skeptical when I saw the OP's post, but with the big announcement today, I am on the phone now! Yipee!!!! I hated to pay the money, but I also hated to lose the email accounts that I have had for years even more.

In the time that it has taken me to type this post, I have managed to become a FREE member! I am really happy about this. I am sure that I can think of something to do with the extra money! Maggie

Here is the official notice.

Dear AOL Member,

I want to let you know about some exciting changes happening at AOL. Our service has always provided both a way to connect to the Web and an entertaining online destination once you're connected.

Today we are announcing that AOL's software, email, and many compelling AOL features -- including your Address Book, Screen Name, the Buddy List® feature and more -- will be free to everyone with an Internet connection.

What Does This Mean for You?

Nothing about your service arrangement with us will change unless you want it to. Your current plan, which includes 24/7 customer support, unlimited email storage, your email addresses and all the AOL content and services you rely on, will still be there for you.

Even if you choose a different high-speed provider from the one you use to connect to the Internet today:
You can keep your AOL Screen Name and email address for as long as you want to use it, completely free;
You can continue to use your AOL software, and you can still get all your favorite features and content, completely free;
You will still get the most comprehensive free set of safety and security tools available, plus world-class, high-speed content like video, music and more.
All of this is free, no matter who provides your Internet connection.

Why Is AOL Doing This?

We're simply changing with the times. There are many options for Internet access, whether it's dial-up or broadband. At the same time, a lot of online content and services are now available on the Web free of charge because they are supported by advertising. So, while your Internet connectivity needs may change over time, what you love about the Web does not. We are now able to ensure that the familiar AOL experience, your Screen Name, your Address Book, your Buddy List, your Favorite Places, and other content and features you enjoy, will always be available to you for free.

In September, you will be hearing about more changes and other new features at AOL. Until then, you can visit AOL Keyword: New AOL for more information and to sign up for informative email alerts.

Sincerely,

Jon Miller
Chairman and CEO
AOL LLC

I didn't have to threaten cancellation...I just went to keyword "FREE AOL" and then got this page that said:

7. When Can I Get AOL for Free?
If you already have an alternative way to connect to the Internet, either by dial-up or broadband, you can move to the free AOL plan and continue to access your AOL e-mail, software, and security features. To change your current AOL plan, simply call Member Services at 1-800-984-6207.

They quickly changed it over.

Ugh I called 2 days ago and she said I didn't qualify. I even said I wanted to cancel then, so she spoke to a supervisor and came back and said I still didn't qualify.

try again! it's supposed to be available to everyone now! good luck :)

I've been on hold for 18 minutes and counting. Has anyone with the $7.95 BYOA plan been able to switch to the free plan? When I go to keyword "billing" it brings up my current plan, then when I click on it to change pricing plan it says that's not an option, so now I think they have me locked into some kind of deal for the past 3 years that I think was supposed to be 12 month committment.

mine was either the $7.95 or $9.95, I can't remember. I had no trouble making the switch. I'm trying to think... I believe someone in an e-mail loop I'm in was able to make the billing changes through AOL Live Help. It might be worth a try?

If you already have a bring your own access plan with AOL, no need to waste time calling on the phone. You can log into AOL, go to keyword "change plan," and chose free access that way. Takes about 10 seconds.

Yep, I did this too .. they're advertising it on the news and on AOL.com so it is widely known now, so no turning you down.

I am shocked that you guys would pay 14.95 for an email address. I find that :lmao: who cares if it's @aol or @verizon or whatever? Thats an insane waste of $$ IMHO. But then again I never used AOL and always HATED it! :confused3

I didn't pay it for an *EMAIL ADDRESS*. I have plenty of those..verizon, yahoo, gmail, iwon etc...I have always had it for the software..I love aol software and everything I get with it...Like free safety and security--I have McAfee for free, aol explorer (I like it better then internet explorer or firefox), spyware scans, parental controls are great--and the kids loves their KAOL---cool backgrounds, fun games and lots of homework help. I've had aol for 5 years now and been on DSL for 3---since then I have been paying $9.95 per month---but now it is free and I still get all those great extras I stuck around for ;)
