Anything behind name "687"?

I think the confusion comes from a misquote. A "block" is a large section of a ship, that is welded to others to form a complete ship. A block is also made up of smaller blocks, or spaces that are numbered also.

The number 687 is the ships hull number assigned by the yard. As noted previously, 687 is the Dream, the Fantasy is 688.

Each area on a ship is also given a number. This is to make it easier for the shore side engineers, or workers that are unfamilar with the ship, to locate things or spaces on a ship. Ive seen a different refernce to where 687 came from, and it had nothing to do with the hull number. Ill have to look to see if I can find it again,

To help close the subject, 687 is the hull number, as shown in the Skeels Coin for the Dream. The coin, along with other artifacts from he ship building process is on display in club 687. Here is the keel coin.

FWIW: According to allears: "687 gets its name from the Disney Dream's identification number at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany."

687 was also its hull.

I remembered that story but couldn't remember where I heard it from so didn't want to contradict anyone. But I was at that presentation and that is exactly what Gary Landrum said.

It is definitely what he said. I was there too. But as above, DCL assigns stories to everything. Hard to tell which (or even if both) are accurate!

There is a plaque in one of the alcoves at 687 detailing the facts about the Dream being Hull #687 @ MW. I think I have a pic somewhere.

Here's some speculation from snopes.com:

My own guess is the second one--that Walt liked how the numbers looked.

(Pictures of the inside of the club can also be found at the above link)

More than he just liked how the numbers looked - Walt was supposedly very fond of the number 3 in general, to the point that he even ensured Disneyland's address was 1313 Harbor Blvd. The number behind Club 33 even has an "in-story" context, in that every building in New Orleans has an address which numbers in sequence as you pass down the "street". Sure enough, Club 33 is neighbored by buildings #32 and #34. I have little doubt they designed the surrounding land on purpose to match the club.

We took the ship tour on the Dream and we were told it is unlucky to call a ship by it's name while it is in the building stages. ALL ships are numbered and the Dream is 687. Also a gold coin is placed in the hull of the ship for luck.

True - it is named after the hull # of the Dream and they placed a replica of the hull coin in the pub - see if you can find it next time you're on the Dream everyone - it's a cool scavenger hunt item to consider.

There will not be a 688 on the Fantasy - the name escapes me but it will be an 'Irish Pub' per our tour guide in November of 2011.

We were on the EBTA in April. There was a presentation on the Dream by one of the WD Imagineers. He said the Dream is being built of "blocks" like a Lego project. He said that the sports bar is located in block #687 and that is why they named it 687.

Perhaps there are other people who were at the presentation who can confirm that my memory is correct.

You, you're right, actually in the bar there is a picture of the cut steel frame of the bar and the numb roy the block is clearly written in white paint....thats the "block number" for the bar.

It's O'Gills Pub ....after Darby O'Gill and the Little People Disney movie.

Maybe this will help? From the DisUnplugged blog: http://www.disunplugged.com/2011/01/24/disney-dream-christening-cruise-day-2-castaway-cay/

“687″ is a sports bar named after the block number of the ship. 687 was the vessel number assigned to the Dream in the Meyer-Werft shipyard, and stamped on every block, every piece of steel used to build the ship.

So the fact that a photo shows the modular piece of the ship with that number makes sense and is not a coincidence. That number was stamped on every single piece of the ship.

We asked while we were on the ship. As a few others have said, it was the number assigned to the Dream. It's bad luck to name a ship before it hits water, so as the 687th ship to be built in that shipyard, it was referred to as 687.

I thought it was because Walt was a 33rd degree Mason. It's a masonic number.

Well, actually it's Vault 687 at Gringotts Wizarding Bank. That's the vault that belonged to the Potter family.

Though that's a movie-only thing. We're re-reading the HP books and we're on #1 now, and there's no number mentioned for his vault. The HP wikia verifies that it's identified with a number in the movie, not the book.

Sorry to take part in the resurrection of a zombie thread, but there ya go. ;)

Yeah, I saw that after I posted. And I do know it's only in the movie, but I thought I'd just clear up the "Secret Room" thing. The secret room (in my view) is the Room of Requirement, not the vault.
