Two of my kids have unusual names. They're happy with them and have never had any issues. Strangely, my kid with a "normal" name (Silas) is the only one I've heard mispronounced or had some one ask "Did you make that up?"
I can't do the names that are spelled "differently" which is a big trend now. It's a personal issue with me because I have no patience and wouldn't want to give my kids the stress of having to constantly spell their name or hear it mispronounced. My name is fairly common (Candace), but I would say is only spelled correctly less than 5% of the time. It was very annoying and I learned early that I always had to spell it and emphasize the A. My sister has an uncommon, but not unusual name that is always mistaken for another name. Even after repeating it multiple times, she's usually still called the other name.
I have an unusual name and I hate it. I swore I would never do that to my children. Their names aren't Emily and Jason but they aren't the only ones in a 1000 mile radius with their name like I am.
Its funny when I see kids who have ususual names, most of the parents have what is called "normal" names.
Just think how you would feel with the name you are giving your child. For some its OK. But as far as I'm concerned , I would have loved Emily as my name.![]()
All three of my girls have unusual names..DD 11 is Remy Kaelynn, DD 5 is Holland Elisabeth, and DD (to be born in Jan) will be Koi Isabella. Both my oldest girls adore their names and no one has ever made fun of them or given them a hard time. If they find they don't like them later in life they can go by their relatively "normal" middle names for all I care lol.
My dd Piper, is still pretty young (8), but she loves her name, and we get lots of compliments on it. I don't know how unusual it is, I would say middle of the road unusual? She's never met anyone else with it, though we have seen other people with the same name...one here on the boards that's an adult, and occasionally in a newspaper or something. My ex and I both have pretty common names, so we wanted something different for her. Definitely beats being in a grocery, hearing your name, and turning to realize it's some Mom calling her kid..lol.
Girl, I'm so with you on that. I wanted my name to be Kelly until I was about 14. I even saved money so that I could pay for the name change but my mom wouldn't let me![]()
Funny you say that. I have told my mom I think from the time I could speak how much I hated my name. She thought for sure when I became an adult I would change it.
I think she feels bad because she knows I don't like my name but I would think it would hurt her even more if I legally changed it, so I would never do it, though I've definetly thought about it.
Are you glad you did? We named our oldest son Sage - we loved it then and we still do. He's never had any problems with his name, he's told us he likes it because he's the only person he's ever met with his name. Just curious how others have fared with their choice.![]()
I love the name Piper...... Just wanted to put that out there!![]()
