Anyone who has given their child an unusual name ...

I have an unusual name-at least it was when I was growing up and I hated it. No one knew how to spell it, people kept telling me how "weird" my name was, etc. Now it isn't so bad because you don't have 10 people with the same name but it is still a PAIN IN THE REAR having to spell my name for everything and everyone AND getting it corrected when it doesn't show up spelled right on documents, etc.

Not that Sage is difficult to pronounce or spell but many of the unusual names are.

My dd Piper, is still pretty young (8), but she loves her name, and we get lots of compliments on it. I don't know how unusual it is, I would say middle of the road unusual? She's never met anyone else with it, though we have seen other people with the same name...one here on the boards that's an adult, and occasionally in a newspaper or something. My ex and I both have pretty common names, so we wanted something different for her. Definitely beats being in a grocery, hearing your name, and turning to realize it's some Mom calling her kid..lol.

My kids are pretty normal on names but the two older are spelled different than normal and the youngest.. I have yet to meet another Garren. I have a plain jane name. My sister had friends who were twins named Snow and Star. I think names have to fit the kid.

My name is Dayna as in Dana but I hate that it's unusual. It's spelled DAY-NA but people tend to say Dania, Dayan, Diana... when they read my name.

It's annoying. I wish I didn't have an unusual name, I wish that it was at least spelled normally. I can't tell you how much I envied the Ashleys, Jessicas, Katies, Kellys and Andreas of my schools because of their normal names.

I don't care what my kids names will be as long as they're commonly spelled. So it will be Allison and not Alysin... Rebecca and not Rebekkah.

Two of my kids have unusual names. They're happy with them and have never had any issues. Strangely, my kid with a "normal" name (Silas) is the only one I've heard mispronounced or had some one ask "Did you make that up?" :upsidedow

I can't do the names that are spelled "differently" which is a big trend now. It's a personal issue with me because I have no patience and wouldn't want to give my kids the stress of having to constantly spell their name or hear it mispronounced. My name is fairly common (Candace), but I would say is only spelled correctly less than 5% of the time. It was very annoying and I learned early that I always had to spell it and emphasize the A. My sister has an uncommon, but not unusual name that is always mistaken for another name. Even after repeating it multiple times, she's usually still called the other name.

All three of my girls have unusual names..DD 11 is Remy Kaelynn, DD 5 is Holland Elisabeth, and DD (to be born in Jan) will be Koi Isabella. Both my oldest girls adore their names and no one has ever made fun of them or given them a hard time. If they find they don't like them later in life they can go by their relatively "normal" middle names for all I care lol.

I have an unusual name and I hate it. I swore I would never do that to my children. Their names aren't Emily and Jason but they aren't the only ones in a 1000 mile radius with their name like I am.

Its funny when I see kids who have ususual names, most of the parents have what is called "normal" names.

Just think how you would feel with the name you are giving your child. For some its OK. But as far as I'm concerned , I would have loved Emily as my name. ;)

I agree.

Girl, I'm so with you on that. I wanted my name to be Kelly until I was about 14. I even saved money so that I could pay for the name change but my mom wouldn't let me :)

Funny you say that. I have told my mom I think from the time I could speak how much I hated my name. She thought for sure when I became an adult I would change it.

I think she feels bad because she knows I don't like my name but I would think it would hurt her even more if I legally changed it, so I would never do it, though I've definetly thought about it.

We wanted to name our son D'Artagnan but there was a great uprising in the family. :rotfl2:

We went with James. ;)

I like unusual names, but don't care for common names with strange spellings. I don't see the point of it.

My oldest is Quentin (besides for the producer, we have only meant one other). My middle is Jolicia (jo-li-c-ia). I did not pick this name....it came with her however, I love it. I never heard it before and we get tons of compliments on it.

No, I do not regret it. My name......super common.....Kim and a very popular last name. As I was giving birth to my oldest, another with the same name was giving birth down the hall. Many of our relatives visited the wrong room!

My mom thought I would change it too when I legally could but as much as I don't love... as an adult, I still wouldn't change it. But when I was 10, I was certain the day of my 18th birthday, I'd go to the county to change it :)

I bet there's some kind of trend...

Common name will choose an uncommon name that will choose common name, and so on...

Are you glad you did? We named our oldest son Sage - we loved it then and we still do. He's never had any problems with his name, he's told us he likes it because he's the only person he's ever met with his name. Just curious how others have fared with their choice. :)

I had to look to see if you were from.
My sisters best friend named her son Sage. I thought he was like 4 years old and I just saw his picture in the paper and he was in 6th grade. Darn kids grow up fast, seems like yesterday, when she had him.

Thank you! It's funny, most who meet her at some point comment on how well it fits, she's just very outgoing. Funny you're in Maine, we go to Moosehead every other yr or so, and all of our extended fam is there :)
