Anyone watching Michael Jackson's memorial?

Not sure if this is the best place to ask this question but I hate to start another MJ thread. I am not a big fan and I haven't followed all the crap surrounding this but I just got done watching a special on him. They mentioned the full name of the oldest child and his middle name is Joseph. Is he named after MJ's father or is there another Joseph? It seems strange that he named his child after a man he supposedly hated.

I just finished watching the memorial service.

I feel Paris wanted to speak. I didn't get the feeling that she was being forced to do so. If you listened and watched the lips of the woman behind her in the large hat.....When Paris fell apart the woman said "ok, That's enough let's go." Janet quickly whisked her off the stage (like any aunt would do for a young child) to try to protect her dignity and not show her off.

I thought the memorial was well done. I won't comment on all points, but I laughed at stories shared, but I got teary as well, just like any funeral I have attended.

As good a place as any to ask.

I'm assuming it has to be since his daughter's middle name is Catherine, after his mother. But then again, he could have named him after himself, because his middle name was also Joseph.

But the part you didn't mention is that the youngest son's name is the same as the oldest son's ie. Prince Michael Joseph Jackson II (whose nickname is Blanket)

Michael Jackson's middle name was also Joseph. I would think he gave his son the same middle name as himself and not so much because it was his own father's name.

Well I only caught the end of the memorial (before We Are the World) and I thought it was absolutely BEAUTIFUL. I started tearing up during the song and when Marlon said he hurt, I was in tears and cried the remainder. I'm going to have to get myself together and try to watch it another time.

In any way, he is the father to all three. And I bet he was a great dad!!

Beautiful service -- very tastefully planned -- no child should lose a parent and I hope for the best for those poor children.

I loved seeing Brooke Shields, she's very elegant and genuine, but I thought I had read she hadn't seen him for 18 years (since 1991). Is that right? For them being such good friends, I'm curious why she hadn't seen him in so long. Maybe they just grew apart.

I watched it today on CNN and I'm watching it again tonight. I have to say, I have been a bit obsessed about all the coverage since MJ's death. Not sure why, although I was the same when Princess Diana died.

I thought the memorial was very well done. When Brooke Shields spoke, I cried. And of course, when Paris cried, I cried along with her. So sad for those children. With the exception of his children, it seems that MJ had a lot of sadness in his life. None of us will ever know what his life was truly like, so we cannot judge. He was extremely talented and died too young.

I'm also curious about who wasn't there with the family -- Miko Brando? He's been on CNN etc for the past 2 weeks, was apparently hanging out with MJ all the time, but wasn't even invited to the family ceremony at the cemetary. Wondering if, as pp stated, the family had tried to stop the drug use -- maybe they see his friends as contributing to it?

Once again I have to ask how someone can be a great dad on a 48k a month RX drug addiction. That is a crapload of meds. Not just enough to mellow you out and make you a great happy parent. I think that would of lasted Anna Nicole Smith a few months and we have all seen the video of her in the clown makeup. If you think that is great parenting then by all means MJ is the best because I guarantee you she was higher functioning then he was. Just how much parenting he was even conscious to do is even debatable at this point. I know he had some damn fine nannies thank god.

And if he was taking that iv sleeping drug like is speculated there just are no words. I just can't believe the thought processes of some people on the dis. I just noticed your location. I don't know if you are always in Germany or just overseas now but I really think it is different overseas. There was a reason the concerts were in London. They could make much more there.

I think Americans were much more fickle and negative about Jackson. Sad really.

I don't really know what is normal for kids. I know the 10 year old across the street didn't know who Jackson was at all. My DS knew Thriller (he's 8) but that is it.

The kids are up now and I asked them if most of their friends knew Michael's work before he died. They say that all of the kids who listen to "real music" defined as "not just Hannah Montanna and junk like that" know his stuff (which they tell me is maybe half the kids their ages they know). They say most kids know the music and videos from Thriller and Bad but not much from the Jackson 5. DS says "way more kids can sing Michael Jackson's songs than the Beatles song's."

not to take the thread off on a tangent, but since this IS the memorial thread...did anyone find out who the african-american/asian singer was at the end of the service (we are the world/heal the world)? she was awesome, and i'm curious who she is-i don't recall anyone mentioning her name.

According to Rolling Stone online her names is Judith Hill. I agree with many that it is great that this song was done by his own singers.

I watched the whole thing and cried many times. Today is the anniversary of my Mom's passing so my emotions were high already.

I thought it was a beautiful tribute, not at all the circus I was afraid it would be.

I am 2 years older than Michael and remember his entire career. I never believed the allegations against him; I don't think a sexual thought ever crossed his mind.

I am so amazed every time they show him at 10 years old out in front of his brothers, performing like an old pro. Think of the 10 year old children you know, could you imagine them ever doing what he did?

I have an eerie feeling about the title of his last tour. I have a feeling he did not expect to live long after it was over, that he was doing it to secure his children's future.

I, too, am 2 years older than him and like Al Roker said, he sang the "tapestry of my life."

I remember thinking "what a cute little boy... how in the world does he sing like he knows what he's talking about?"

I think of people like Princess Di, MLKing, Ryan White, people who died so young but accomplished so much. Sometimes it's because their purpose was so strong they did so much more so young.

I didn't get that she was being forced. One of the brothers was turning the mike thinking it was for Janet. She was the one who was trying to lower it for Paris. If it had been set up, he would have turned the mike to the little girl, and not for his sister.

No I didn't watch it, I did watch Paris on TMZ and she looked like she was forcing herself to cry more then anything IMO. And of course she loved her father and thought he was the greatest, he probably never bothered her, if I remember correctly didn't he like little boys?

I don't know about ANS being higher functioning than MJ. She didn't start off as a very highly functioning person even without the drugs.
And I can name plenty of other celebrities (who happen to be parents as well) who have been addicted to pain medication and never lost their hero status. Brett Favre is the first example that comes to mind. He checked himself into rehab and beat the addiction and it's a shame that MJ wasn't strong enough to beat the addiction but considering his upbringing, it's no surprise.
