I had no idea sodium phosphate prep had been taken off shelves due to kidney failure. I found out tonight from my DD that they did this in Dec 08 and I googled it and it is true. I had to see Nephrologist today and didn't tell her til after appointment and now they are doing a kidney biopsy on Monday due to very high levels in protein and creatinine levels. Did anyone hear about this?

I would be interested to know more about this. My husband's grandmother has been on dialysis nightly since drinking that prep. She experienced kidney failure and was hospitalized due to drinking that solution. The doctors blamed it on her diabetes!?!

I've had high creatine levels after drinking that stuff before a colonoscopy, and being a heart patient for me is very dangerous. Now I have to be careful with every little thing a medical professional gives me. I have to get my cardiogist's approval before I take anythng.

My advice has always been that you have to be an advocate for your own health and be PRO ACTIVE!!

News to me too, funny but I think that's what I had as prep for when I donated my kidney to hubby (2001). :rolleyes1

I wish you well and some good news with test results.
If it is to be renal failure and you have any questions regarding dialysis and transplants.. just slide me a PM. Been there done that.. it's not an easy life to be in kidney failure but it is not the end. Hubby has been in failure for 13 years, 3 glorious years with a succesful transplant and now does home hemo with Nx Stage.

Good luck!:flower3:

Diabetes can cause kidney failure. From what I read... Older patients are more at risk to develop the phosphates crystals in the renal tubules from the prep.. It may be that the prep pushed the renal failure to occur sooner than expected.

My cousin died in November, following continued kidney failure from a colonoscopy prep in August.

I don't know how to post inks but I googled Fleet recall December 11, 2008. After you check it out let me know what you think. I'm diabetic also but the Nephrologist didn't say he thought the cause is diabetes so I think they just tell patients that so they won't have a problem. I 'm so sorry about her having to be on dialysis because of something the Dr should have found prior to her taking that.

You are so right. You have to be an advocate for your own health. Glad you have a good Cardiologist.

Actually no.. it wasn't that great of a kidney... :lmao:

It didn't want to play nice in his body and he rejected, he's on dialysis at home now.

He uses Nx Stage.... we love this lil machine! No more center based dialysis feeling like you're living FOR dialysis instead of WITH dialysis. If that makes sense.

A friend found out about it when she went to pick up the prescription in January! She had set up the colonoscopy appointment and gotten the precription before the recall, her Dr's office never bothered to call and tell her about the recall. :sad2:

Something else that always worried me about any of the preps for xrays/imaging is they tell you not to eat or drink but if you read the literature with it they want you to be well hydrated. :confused3

When my son was going through testing a long time ago I kept him hydrated. As a nurse, I could never get an answer about this from the doctors. Perhaps someone finally is looking into the issue.

I'm so sorry this has affected your family. I hope things turn out okay. Please keep us posted.

My mom got very ill after drinking the prep. She didn't feel well for quite a while and it took a while to even pinpoint that her issue was her kidneys. We were in the beginning stages of planning a transplant when she rallied and her kidney function picked up. She stablized at about 18% function and has maintained that for about 3 years now. Dialysis may still be in her future if her function declines at some point, but so far so good.

My dad is a physician and also thought that she may not have been hydrated enough.

Oh gracious. Definitely find out more and have someone talk to her doctors...yeah, diabetes can cause kidney problems, but that sounds awfully close together!

I think it's because the medical professions have it drummed into their heads about patients throwing-up during procedures and aspirating into their lungs. "No eating/no drinking" has turned into standard boilerplate for all/most medical procedures, regardless of if the fasting actually makes *sense* for that particular procedure.

Chuck S - So sorry for your loss.

agnes!

My friend just had a colonscopy two weeks ago using Osmoprep. Both OsmoPrep and Fleets had the FDA put a black box warning on them because 20 people over the past few years had kidney "incidents" after use. I did not hear it was pulled but I know some docs won't use it.

The last info I heard was that they cannot be sure if it was patient fault (not being hydrated enough) or if they had preexisting kidney issues. My friend decided to use the prep anyway because she's used it 9 other times with no issues.

Great. I need a colonoscopy this year.

So what is the prep in question? My last prep was the Fleet that you mixed with 7up.

I'll guess that would be easier at home. I hadn't seen the Nx Stage I'm glad you posted the pic. Bless you both.
