Anyone have kidney problems after taking prep for colonoscopy?

I don't know how to post inks but I googled Fleet recall December 11, 2008. After you check it out let me know what you think. I'm diabetic also but the Nephrologist didn't say he thought the cause is diabetes so I think they just tell patients that so they won't have a problem. I 'm so sorry about her having to be on dialysis because of something the Dr should have found prior to her taking that.

I googled the info and forwarded it to my inlaws. I think it's worth looking into for them. The whole situation never sat right with me. The lady was in great health before this.

Fleets
Osmoprep

Wow, the Osmoprep is what made me pass out twice a couple months ago. Made me sick sick too. I drank plenty though and have no kidney issues. Just felt like an overdose or something. Dr. said I could use Fleets again in 5 years. I did well with that 5 years ago. Guess that may change!

Unless there has been "new" data released in the last month or so, I don't know if they will pull it.

Remember, of ALL the people that use Fleets and Osmoprep, there have only been just under 20 cases of this "specific" type of kidney issue. They haven't even yet proved that it is due to the prep itself or some combo of the prep and a person having kidney issues already that were undetected.

I mean, really, antibiotics probably cause this many problems in a day throughout the world and they aren't pulling them off the shelf, just putting applicable warnings.

Quite honestly, I think most people should undergo pre-colonoscopy bloodwork before fasting for almost two days and then ingesting a large amount of ANY chemical. Propolyene glycol doesn't make me feel any better. Am I making sense?

Hi! In a "fleeting moment" a woman's life changes...
Unfortunately profits over people plays itself out again and again.
One of my clients ingested the Fleet Phospho-soda as a bowel cleanser, as did so many others, in preparation for her colonoscopy. She had NO prior kidney problem until she used this product. She was hospitalized for 6 days!
Presently, she has lost about 1/2 of her kidney function. Her creatinine and Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) is still elevated and her GFR is decreased.
What upsets me most is that this was entirely preventable! In 1997
Fleet received a report of a death in Australia of a patient following the use of Fleet Phospho-soda as a bowel prep. In 2003 Dr. Glen Markowitz (a renal pathologist from Columbia Presbyterian Hospital) published a paper about renal failure occuring after the use of Phospho-Soda. In 2005
Dr. Markowitz reported 21 cases of acute kidney failure from oral preparations made with sodium phosphate. Three of the cases led to permanent dialysis and one to a kidney transplant.
In May, 2006, The FDA issued an "Alert" regarding the occurrence of Acute Phosphate Nephropathy after the ingestion of sodium phosphate solutions or tablets. It wasn't until after the FDA's 12/11/08 "alert" that the use of Fleet Phospho-soda could lead to kidney failure in patients with NO pre-existing health factors that would put them at risk for developing kidney injury, that Fleet finally recalled it's product (after touting its safety for so many years).
My heart goes out to all who have suffered. If you would like citations to the articles that Dr. Markowitz has authored, let me know.

DD had to go to the drugstore for me last week and noticed much of the laxative shelves were empty.. She asked a clerk why and she said there was a recall on all laxatives containing senekot.. Anyone hear anything about that? :confused3

I didn't bother to check it out because it's nothing we use..
