Anyone going Geocaching this weekend? **NEW CACHERS...POP IN!**

What did the ER doc do? QUOTE]

He came in and just slapped some glue on it without getting the edges together at all. She looked like she had been in a bad bar fight!:scared1: She could have worn a patch pirate: and maybe it wouldn't have been too noticable!

Holy cow! That is unbelievable. I'd definitely be making a stink about it.

We attended a 8/8/08 geocaching meet and greet tonight here in Honolulu. Over 50 people there. Lots of fun meeting people who are really into caching. Learned quite a bit about geocoins, travel bugs, etc.

Fun games for all, with prizes and raffle. Can't wait for the next one to learn even more.

Sounds like you had a lot of fun, Jeff! I'm surprised there wasn't an event scheduled around here. I know of one that was in the Richmond area, but that's it. Events are a lot of fun. Looking forward to our next one at the end of the month...a campfire one night followed by the annual picnic the next day. Wooo hooo!!!

Hi Everyone!
I haven't been around for a while again, although I have been in contact with Sandy through PM's. Our Navy son and his Navy fiancee were married on the 15th in VA Beach! We took our GPSr down but didn't have any spare time for caching so we blew it again. It seems like some of our vacations just don't work out the way we'd like as far as caching goes. We did get to take a tour of Sarah Beth's ship, the USS Bataan; and we got to take our DGD to the beach. It was her first time seeing the ocean and she really enjoyed it.
I accidentally cracked the screen of our MIO car GPSr just before we left for the trip so we stopped along the way and bought a TomTom. It's a lot better than the MIO and was cheaper than what we paid for the MIO 1 1/2 years ago. I'll have to see how it works for geocaching!
There's not much else to report. We are hoping to talk the newlyweds into vacationing at WDW with us sometime next year. They can get rooms at Shades of Green for a great price; we just have to work around deployments.
Lilallybean: Sorry to hear about Emily and I hope it all turns out well. By the way, what problem are you having with paperless caching? It's really pretty easy and works great!
Well, maybe we'll get out caching this weekend.
Good caching, everyone!

Congratulations to the happy couple! pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust: And glad DGD liked the beach. That must have been great to see her playing there. Sorry about the cracked screen, but you got a new GPS! Have to love a GPS in the car.

This is the weekend of our area's annual picnic. Had a great time at it yesterday. Mostly enjoyed the picnic, but did get a few caches also. Friday night was the campfire. That was a lot of fun! Hoping to get some decent caching done tomorrow.

Anyone else? :teeth: :magnify:

We're planning to get out this morning for some caching! Don't know how many we'll do and we're not quite sure which direction we'll be heading. We'll be taking the dogs and we don't want them out hiking too much once it gets hot so we'll try to get out early (7:00 AM or so). I'll file a report later if I have one.
Good Caching!
Mike

We managed to get out and do a multi-cache yesterday morning! This one was in a State Game Land and is called Coffman Hill. It took us about 2 hours to do, mostly because I had trouble finding the first part and then we decided to try to take a short cut back to the parking area. What a mistake the short cut was! We lost a path part way through it and ended up bushwhacking down through a boulder filled ravine and through some tough woods. It reminded us of our Search and Rescue days, that's for sure. We had the dogs with us and they managed pretty well. It was actually Casey, our Border Collie, who found the final stage of the cache!
Anyway, it was good to get out again!
Good caching!

Sounds like you had fun, Mike! Hope your wife and pups had just as good a time. :) I would guess you like bushwhacking. Any time I do that, I'm always thinking of the snakes! :scared: Yesterday we got a cache called Sandy Bottom Snakes. :scared: That was in Sandy Bottom Park. Need I say we rode our bikes on a trail for that? :teeth:

Had a good time at the campfire and the picnic. Can't wait for another!

Happy caching! :magnify:

Hello gang, sorry it has taken me so long to reply to the recent postings. We are getting ready for a new play that our theater group is doing. My DH and I have the lead roles, so we have lots of lines to do. Our DD will be playing our daughter in the show. Opening night is her birthday so she is excited. This week I am keeping my sisters 20 month old triplets while she and her hubby are in Vegas to celebrate their 5th Anniv. So far so good, but we have 5 days to go.
Mike...as for the paperless caching, I am not sure what my problems is. I jsut can't seem to get any of it. I have learned how to download the coords to my GPS, but that is as far as I have gotten with it.
Well, one of the babies is crying so I have got to go for now.

lilallybean,
I hope your play goes well. As they say, "Break a leg"!
For paperless caching, you will need some type of device capable of storing the data. I'm not sure if any of the new GPS receivers are capable of that or not. Some of the new cell phones may also be capable of this. We use a PDA (Palm III) that we got on Ebay for about $20. I have a Pocket Query set up to run once a week to download the data for 500 caches for our paperless caching. I have to use a program that I purchased on the Internet for about $10 in order for it to work on my PDA. I unzip the GPX file and upload it to the PDA. It then gives us all sorts of data about the cache, including past logs. If you are currently downloading coords using a Pocket Query for your GPSr, you should be able to do paperless caching pretty easily.
It sure beats carrying papers around, especially on rainy days!
Have fun with your play and the triplets!
Good caching.

lilallybean...Break a leg! Lots of fun doing a play. Reminds me of my theatre arts class back in high school. How's it going with the babies? Have you taken them out caching? :teeth:

We have lots of wind today with TS Hanna. Occasionally rain on and off. We have 4 new caches within 4 miles that just popped up last night and this morning. Woo hoo! And another 2 the day before. It will be nice to go for 6 caches within 5 miles!   Haven't had that in a long time. Maybe tomorrow if the weather improves.

Happy caching! :magnify:

We ended up getting 2.1 inches of rain, which is great since the weatherman was calling for 3-7 inches in our area. We had some wind along with it and even had a possible tornado do some damage to a high school about 20 miles away. So, there was no caching yesterday! Today, we have church, a church picnic and then dinner with our DD, her husband and his parents (from NC), so there probably won't be any today, either. We also have our Navy son home for the weekend, so we'll be spending some time with him before he heads back.
Sandy: I hope you get those new caches added to your found list! Maybe you'll land a FTF!
Good caching!

Hope you had a nice time with your son, Mike! Sounds like you got more of the storm than we did. Today at work I heard that it took more of a turn inland from us. The Richmond area seemed to get it worse than we did. We just had occasional rain and some wind. Things stayed in place though!

Went out for the new caches yesterday. No FTFs this time around. Four of them came out and then one the following day. I was more interested in being able to drive down one road and pick up five!   Haven't had that much fun caching since we went along 360 in the Richmond area. :teeth: There ended up being six along the street. One of them had a different name and wasn't officially part of the guy's series. And one other in Hampton. That container was too cute! This was an ammo can in a tree (and a micro.) :lmao: :lmao: Hope you had a great weekend with your family!

Happy caching! :magnify:

Bummer! George & Martha was archived! :( I'll hope the owners dig it out at some point. I'll have to e-mail them with a suggestion. :)

I'm thinking we need a few days caching in a new area (read that as not here, some place with LOTS of unfound caches for us!) during the upcoming holidays. Anyone else?

How disappointing when a cache you are looking forward to doing goes missing before you can get to it. Maybe it will be up and running again soon. Anybody doing a flash mob event on November 8th? I actually decided to host my first event and planned the one for our area. I am excited about it, but nervous too. I want it to be fun and work out ok. I have several prizes and several people have signed up already. At least it is only 15 minutes long so not really too much to do.

ok, long story shirt my sister is n a bad divorce and custody battle. We are looking for a gps type device to put on my neice incase of an abduction. Anyone know anything like this? Necklace, watch? Something trackable but not traceable!
Thanks In Advance

Nothing posted for a WWFM in our area yet. The closest is in Northern VA. But I know there's been talk on the yahoo board of one here. Have fun with it, lilallybean! :)

T&T...I don't know of such a thing. Only thing we did was fingerprints way back when while living in FL. There was some fair going on, and the police were there offering it.

Geocachers find key to Mini Cooper!

Independence couple win car contest

By JOSH NELSON, Courier Staff Writer
INDEPENDENCE --- No maps or big black X-marks led the Thompsons to that picnic table. Just coincidence and luck.

Luck first led Rick and Karla Thompson of Independence to that park. Coincidence caused her to look under that table. That is when she found the key to a brand new Mini Cooper wrapped in a plastic bag. The couple won the car after stumbling on the bag, part of Our Iowa magazine's Iowa Treasure Hunt. The magazine advertised the treasure hunt as a way to promote Iowa's parks to readers

"My first thought was this has gotta be a joke, this can't be for real," Rick Thomspon said.

But it was. The Thompsons picked up their new chili red Mini Cooper from a dealership in Milwaukee on Saturday.

The contest had been going on for more than a year when the Thompsons found their key in September. Editors added a block of counties in each edition showing where the key wasn't located. By September, about half of Iowa's counties remained, said Jerry Wiebel, editor of Our Iowa.

Wiebel said he didn't really have a reason for picking the park in Independence.

"It's just one of those crazy things I came up with," he said.

Wiebel said it did allow the editors to drive by every now and again to check if the key was still there. He was glad the contest lasted as long as it did.

When the Thompsons found the key, they weren't aware of the treasure hunt contest. They had been out geocaching --- an activity that uses global positioning system trackers and the Internet to create a high tech treasure hunt --- when they found the key. Participants hide "caches" in parks and other public areas, and searchers use the technology to track it down.

But Rick and Karla were having difficulty finding their cache. That's when Karla wandered off, thinking they may have been looking in the wrong spot.

"I looked up in a tree, and then I looked under some picnic tables and found the plastic bag packed up underneath the table," Karla said.

Inside was the key, and a note telling them to call Wiebel. There was also an article from Our Iowa discussing the contest. Since their find, Karla said, she's talked with several people who knew about the contest.

"I feel like I need to apologize to them for finding it, because I didn't even know about it. I just blindly stumbled onto it."

The one that may need the most apologies though, is their daughter, Rick said. She's been wanting a Mini Cooper for a few years. Now she's a bit jealous her parents won her dream car.

The car is a major relief for both Rick and Karla, who to commute to their jobs. Rick drives about 64 miles one direction each day to his job in Dubuque at a software company. His 1999 Chevrolet Lumina has more than 307,000 miles on it, he said.

Karla has a shorter drive to Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo. On days she works, she drives a 1997 Ford pick-up truck.

"I told him I get to drive it when I have to work, because I found it," she said.

Dang! Now that would be a nice FTF prize! I know it wasn't a true cache but WOW! Thanks for sharing the story!
