Anyone going Geocaching this weekend? **NEW CACHERS...POP IN!**

What a fun weekend! We went to a CITO event and grabbed a couple multis that had eluded us. It is so much more fun (and easier) to do when you have a friend to help out. This was the first time I really used my new Garmin 60CSx, I loved it! So much better! We also did our first WhereiGO!!! That was fun, not sure how it will do compared to caching, but it was fun. We will be in California in just 25 days, going to see The Mouse of course. We will be leaving the same day that Woodstock starts...bummer, wish I had planned that a little better!:confused3

Splsh-who was your friend that went to MOGA? It was such a big event that I most likely wouldn't have met them, but still cool to make that connection. Hope that you can go next year, it was great!

Hi everyone! I posted on this thread way back at the beginning when we first started caching. My youngest wasn't even one yet so that made it difficult. We took a hiatus for awhile, but started up again this spring. They've recently added many new walking/biking trails near our house so there are a lot of caches there for us to find. We're also near a lot of forest reserves for when we want a little hike.

I hadn't heard of the earthcaches before but it sounds neat. My dad used to teach Earth Science so maybe we can convince them to come out with us. There's a cave one very close to our house.

Just please don't become one of those geocachers who drive from parking lot to parking lot lifting up lamppost skirts looking for 35mm film canisters.
Ah, but for those of us with small kids those are the easiest ones for us. ;) Don't worry, we do our share of hiking/walking too. But it's frustrating to go on a big hike and then not turn up anything.

We've looked for two this year so far and only found one. When we first started a few years ago, we found several as part of a multi-cache, but didn't find the final one. And then we found only one other. So our batting average isn't very good.

I was talking to my son's cub scout leader and we might try this as an activity for our den. I think that would be really fun for them!

Hi, Beth! Nice to see you again. :wave2:

So your kids are about how old now?

Micros and multis are my least favorite. I've put up with them in the past but get so frustrated when I can't find them...like micros in the woods...covered in camo tape! :scared1: Lately I've been ignoring them and search for everything else but them.

Earth Science was my favorite class in college. And now that DS has it in high school, I get all excite for him. LOL! He's not that interested. A cave near you...how interesting!! Sounds like fun!

Last night I was looking up caches in the area where I grew up in NJ. How on earth did I miss something while there called Federal Hill? Strange! A couple of the caches are near what seems to be an old munitions storage area or bunker. There's an iron door to an area inside part of the mountain. Interesting things!

I like the quick urban caches when we're out shopping. Or even just a day of fun finds. And I know we have two or three caches around that the Girl Scouts placed. Seems they have a badge for Geocaching these days.

Keep hunting, Beth! I'm sure you'll be finding more and more. :magnify:

lilallybean...Glad you had fun at the CITO. We went to one a couple years ago and had a blast. And we won a gorgeous compass rose geocoin, too. Our area's CITO this year isn't actually cleaning up. Some of the rangers at a park in Virginia Beach want help sprucing the park up with mulch, plants, painting, etc. Should be fun though.

Hi Fellow Geocachers!
It's nice to see a few new posters on this thread and some new geocachers.
We finally got out again and did some caches while vacationing in Holden Beach, NC, a couple weeks ago. We even managed to top the 300 found mark! It took 4 years or so but we did it. We have done some maintenance on a couple of our caches here in PA and we're looking forward to getting out more often once our house projects are completed. Right now, we're staining the outside of our logs but we should have that wrapped up in a few days, weather permitting.
We are going to try to help a newbie out with her 60CSX GPSr so I downloaded the manual to check it out. She has tried to use it once but couldn't figure it so she's about ready to toss it out the window! I think her name is "agilityisme" and she trains dogs for agility and also does judging. It's nice to have a K-9 connection. I guess the 60CSX can't be that different from our Magellan Explorist 210 so I should be able to help her out.
Well, I have to head off to work. Maybe we'll get out Saturday to do some caching. The way gas prices are going, we won't be running out too often or too far!
Good caching!
Mike of Team SAR-Dogs

Beth-I wanted to suggest to you to check out: SLAGA 2008 Spring Picnic by L Frank and Denmother (GC18VM4). It should be a fun day and you could get to know some of the local cachers.

Hi, Mike!

Congratulations on #300! Wooo hooo!!!!

Sounds like your projects are going well. Maybe the newbie didn't calibrate her GPS first? Occasionally I have strange thing going on with mine. A fellow cacher told me to recalibrate/reset the compass when that happens. Seems to work like a charm when I do.

We have a beautiful day here, and we really need to get out. But I'm dragging my feet from the work week. We need less work and more play time! :woohoo:

Next weekend we have an event on the Middle Peninsula. We haven't done any caching up that way yet. Should be fun!

Happy caching! :magnify:

Sounds like everybody has been busy. I agree we need much more time to play and much less work time! Hubby and I took his sister to the airport today and on the way home stopped to do the caches in the park where we will be having our spring picnic next week. Since I am working at it I won't have much time to cache. I decided to get them now so I can join the discussions about them after the hunt. We added 15 finds to our count and now have 601 finds! YEAH!!

Congratulations on 601, lilallybean!

You will have a blast working at the picnic. Working anything with cachers is always a bunch of fun.

Sometimes after dropping darling son off at Busch Gardens, I'll go find a cache in Williamsburg. :teeth:  There are a few new ones up that way, so I can't wait until he's ready to go again!

Anyone go to any CITO events this weekend? Our area had one on the southside of the water in Virginia Beach. More of a sprucing up the park as opposed to CITO.

Happy caching! :magnify:

Hi Fellow Cachers!
Well, we met up with OESgeo4Fun and somehow got her GPSr to work. We did reset and calibrate it, turned it off and on, and it seemed fine. She found one of our caches and then we headed off to find a nearby micro. She has since done some caching on her own and I think she is enjoying our sport. We managed to get out Sunday and do a multi with our dogs. It was on paths between a canal and the Lehigh River and we enjoyed the walk. Part three was the one that has been giving cachers fits but my DW used her geosenses and made short work of it. We're going to try to get out more often but we'll probably tie in our caching with other trips due to the price of gas.
lilallybean: Congratulations on passing the 600 mark!
Sandy: Where did you live in NJ? It's just a stones throw from our house (I work in NJ) and we do quite a bit of caching over there. I think you may have told me once before but I can't remember. We're in Easton, which borders the Delaware River just across from Phillipsburg (P'burg), NJ.
I have to head to work soon so I guess I'll say Good Caching!
Mike

Sounds like you had a good time, Mike! And glad your new geocaching friend enjoyed it.

We lived in the northeastern part of NJ. Pompton Plains (zip code 07444 for the cachers ;) )was where I grew up. It's right across the highway from Wayne. My dad grew up in Mt. Carmel, PA...zip 17851. :teeth:

Happy caching! :magnify:

Hi Fellow Geocachers!
It looks like this thread has been pretty quiet lately. We got out last weekend and took the dogs over to Merrill Creek Reservoir in NJ to do a couple caches. There are another half dozen or so over there that we haven't found so we should be heading back again soon, possibly tomorrow. What a great place! It has great hiking trails, a visitor's center and bald eagles nesting (we didn't see them last weekend).
In other news, we attended the air show at Andrews Air Force Base a couple weeks ago and had a great time. Our Navy son is now a member of the bases's Auxiliary Security Force and he had duty that weekend so we got to see him in his camo and security gear. He is thinking about becoming a cop once he gets out of the Navy.
Sandee: David and Sarah Beth are still planning an August 15 wedding in VA Beach so it looks like we'll be heading down that way for a few days. I'd like to do a few caches but don't know if we'll have the time. We might try to squeeze in Busch Gardens since we've never been there.
I guess that's it.
Good caching everyone!
Mike

Mike-Sounds like you had a good weekend. It also sounds like your son is doing very well! A wedding coming up...how exciting! Good luck with all of that too, I know it can be a very busy time.
My daughter and I just got back from 9 days in California. We took an all girls trip to Disneyland. Me and my DD, My Mother-in-law, my best friend andher two daughters. We had such an AMAZING time! I don't know how we could ever top this trip!
We got so many wishes granted...both little and BIG!:wizard: The girls got a total of about 30 trading pins free from different cast members. We got VIP seating for 2 different shows (Billy Hill and the Hillbillies and Aladin). The girls got to 'Captain' the Mark Twain river boat, we were escorted to the front of a couple different rides. My DD was givena $40 voucher for a new hoodie after she left hers at an attraction and it was never turned in at lost and found...we REALLY didn't expect that-she left it/she lost it. They got tons of free temporary tattoos, stickers, and magnifing glasses. Then our BIGGIE...we were selected as Grand marshals for the Dream parade!!!:cloud9: That was so amazing! Usally we would have got to stay inthe dream suite too, but they were having a staff function that night and it wasn't an option. Not complaining at all since the parade was so great! We should be getting the signs that they hung on the side of the Dream Car later today.
:cool1:
We also spent a little time at the beach and then a day inHollywood. It was such a great trip and I have to say that I actually think that I liked DL better than WDW. I think mostly the fact that Walt played such a role in every detail of the park, and I liked that it was more compact. There were a few rides that are better in WDW, but for the most part they are the same in the two parks.
Now I hate to admit this especially to some fellow Disney lovers and Cachers, but would you beleive that I forgot my GPS on this trip?!?!?!
I hate to fly and I think I was just so freaked out that I forgot it inthe car. I could have kicked myself for that one. I did manage to do some virtuals inboth DL and Hollywood, but it would have been nice to do some traditionals too.
Well, happy hunting to all of you!

Lilallybean: Wow! What a great trip! You must be personal friends with Mickey or something. The best we have done is AKL for $125/night and free park tickets for our stay at WDW for helping out after 9/11. I did manage a trip to DL when I was in the Navy back in '71 and have some photos around of that great day. I'm glad you and your family and friends had such a great time! Too bad about the GPS, though. I have found that we can take ours on some vacations and not have time to use it anyway. Maybe it's best you forgot it. :confused3
Maybe we'll get out caching today.
See you later!

Mike: Your son's wedding will be here in no time! Busch Gardens? There are a number of caches in Williamsburg. ;) One is practically straight down the street from Busch Gardens about 5 miles. Sounds like you've been having fun caching.  Glad you've gotten a break from the projects.

lilallybean...Wow! Sure does sound like you had a lot of fun! However, DL I will have to pass on. I'm not an earthquake territory type person. :lmao: I'll have to stick to WDW.

There's a particular cache I'm waiting to get back in circulation. I wanted to make it #1,600 but it's MIA! LOL! It's "Congratulations, George & Martha!" And it's located on the grounds of the church where George and Martha Washington were married. BEAUTIFUL old church! So I'm trying to patiently avoid caching until I can go get that one. :teeth:

Anyone else been out? Beth? SplshMtn? :magnify:

:hippie: WOW...the George and Martha cache sounds great! What an amazing place to visit and do a cache! Let us know how that one goes. We had planned on saving a cache by the name of 623 (the only one with that name) for our 623rd find, but we passed it up already. LOL, we will still get it. That one is hid by a friend of ours, a member of our local cachers club-SLAGA. From what we hear about that cache it will take a while to get it. The cache page tells you LOTS of places where the cache is NOT located, but it is still causing headaches. :faint: We have some very sneaky cache hiders here. :stir: We hid one that I am very proud of not long ago. It is called "Butterfield Biggie". It is in the middle of town and stands about 2 feet high and 2 feet wide. It is visable from the parking lot...if ya just knew what you were looking for.:lmao:
We love that it is so big, so visable, and so creative and folks are having to use the hint to get it. Anybody have any feedback on the thoughts of mailing TB for milage and to get to new locations? We have had some discussion on the matter and I wondered what others who are not in SLAGA think about it. Happy hunting gang and lets keep our thread alive!!!

Hi Fellow Geocachers!
Sandee: How close are you to #1600? We just passed #300 and that's after 4 or 5 years of trying. We don't get out as often as we'd like anymore but we did manage to find 5 out of 5 this past weekend back over at Merrill Creek Reservoir. We even found the pieces to one that had been muggled and replaced it. The dogs had a great time!

lilallybean: That Butterfield Biggie must be some cache! Is it some kind of utility box on a pole or something?

Well, I have to head off to work.
Good caching!

lilallybean...Do you have the GC number for your cache? :teeth: Mailing TBs sure would get them somewhere else a lot faster. Can't say I'm for or against doing that one. If I had someone's address somewhere else, I might send one.

Mike...I'm one away! :teeth: Currently at 1,599. I should really get going to the VB area for caches there. Seems the state will be putting in the toll booths at the bridge tunnel and on I-264 soon. I hear they used to have tolls, and they were done away with in the late 1990s. Bummer! That will limit my traveling over there since it will be $2 each way. :( Thank goodness I don't have that drive to work any longer.
So nice of you to replace an MIA cache, Mike! :thumbsup2 We have occasionally added a new log, but we haven't replaced a cache.

Happy caching! :magnify:

Mike...

Great Scott! has a bookmark of caches within a couple miles of the ocean front. Might be helpful if you'll be that close to the water. There's a variety of them including an earthcache and a night cache. (Trust me, you need a REALLY strong light for that one!) :) He has quite a few bookmark lists if you want to take a look at his profile.
