Anyone getting an iPad?

It will be a pay-as-you-go data plan from AT&T. No caps have been mentioned yet. The IPad data plan will be seperate from an existing IPhone data plan.

Also note that it doesn't HAVE to be $30, and it doesn't have to be every month. You can purchase a smaller data package for $15, and IIRC you can even "upgrade" by just paying the extra $15 for the "unlimited" package if you're getting close to the limit. There's even a handy usage counter for you to check how close you are to using up your $15 allotment. And there's no contract, so you can not pay for any data package until you need it, and only pay for the lower level until you need more.

Ok....apparently many iPad owners are having difficulty accessing a wifi connection.

Just got to the Apple discussion and see the comments on this issue.

Apple posted a website to deal with this issue and this was there advice.....I swear....this was it.

Make sure your router is current.

Make sure the router is turned on

and this is my favorite.......

Stand closer to the router.:lmao:

Gosh....that is convenient.

Oh...the problem only gets worse if you lay the iPad down.

Please...dont think I'm making fun of the iPad. I saw one the other day and it is quite slick.......but "stand closer to the router" absolutely KILLS me.:lmao::lmao::lmao:

I really like the IPad. That said.....Apple's solution to this problem is too funny. :lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:

I think most of here could give that kind of advice. :) :rotfl2:

I'm probably purchasing a 3G iPad this summer. I say probably because I'm forcing myself to pay cash for my new toy this time. Lately, life has been getting in the way of having spare cash around.

As for the comparison between the iPad and a Win7 based slate, I don't think the substantial difference between an OS designed with a finger as the pointer in mind, as opposed to one that was designed to be used with a mouse, can be overstated. Mouse pointers can be far more precise than fingers, and the ability to right/middle/left click while pointing is embedded in the heart of Win7.

We'll see how this all shakes out, but I'd be surprised if the Win7-based slates turn out to be long-term competitors with the iPad. In addition to the OS issue (which I really think is probably the most significant one), the HP slate weighs the same as the iPad but has a 10% smaller screen and less battery life. Those tradeoffs are much more significant in day-to-day use than is HDMI-out. How often (and why) are you really going to plug a device that produces less than HD resolution output into the HDMI port of a television set or projector?

Acutally, Win7 works pretty good with a finger. I have a multitouch monitor and haven't had any real problems using it with my finger to navigate around (once I calibrated it). Also keep in mind HP will be offering some form of their TouchSmart software to go on top of the OS.

And the HP Slate will output 1080p via HDMI. But I agree with your question of how often you'd do that.

It seems the biggest problem is with dual-band routers when both bands have the same SSID and using different security settings. Their advice for this issue is equally profound...

...name the networks differently and use the same security settings!

Reminds me of the old joke... Me: "Doctor, it hurts when I go like this." Dr: "Don't go like that."

Funny thing about this issue is it seems some people were able to fix it by turning up the brightness?!! Does turning up the brightness make the iPad smart enough to figure out which network to connect to?!?! :lmao:

Work got one today. I got to play with it for about an hour.

Didn't have any problems with the wifi. I loaded up twitterific. That app was a thing of beauty. We loaded the ABC player and watched a few clips as well as clips from YouTube. I was really impressed with the sound from the internal speakers. I was able to download some free books from the bookstore - but did not have a chance to load the Kindle app. I love my kindle, but I have to say the ebook reader on the ipad was really quite beautiful. The fonts rendered nicely - I thought changing the size was a bit awkward. The dictionary function was much easier to use than the Kindle's. The ease of use was largely because of the touch screen.

Didn't particularly care for the on screen keyboard.

Once I get a chance to play with it for an extended period of time, I'll have a better idea of what I think of it. As it stands now, I definitely plan to try and get one later this year.

Funny, I haven't had any wifi issues at all.

If you do....Apple's official advice is

Just stand closer to the router.

:lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:

That just kills me. It give me a case of the shivering fits giggles.

I have this mental image of a whole group of people clutching their iPads huddled around a router, asking "is this close enough?"

:lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:

Again.....I'm not making fun of the iPad.

I'm making fun of Apple's advice.

No issues with wifi for me. But huddling around the router could be fun especially if we could roast marshmallows over the warm glow of the router.

My wifi issue was wpa related, the weird thing is, I was able to fix it by backing my security settings to an older 64 bit WEP setting. I have an apointment at the apple store on Friday to testing things out.
The device is great, the screen is great, but apps are running slower than I anticipated. We'll see what the genus bar says.
After a couple of days on then road, this could replace my laptop on short trips.

Mine should be in my hands in time for our trip to WDW at the end of the month. Can't wait!

The genius bar must have been up all night thinking about this one :lmao:

Maybe Steve Jobs will add it into his keynote today ;)

Just a word of caution WEP is not secure.

I am holding out for the Google WePad. It is being released in Germany next month. It supports Flash, multitasking, expansion and comes with a webcam.

Looks like the iPad will be getting multitasking with the iPhone OS 4.0. It's weird that it will be available for phones this summer but not until the fall for iPad.

I wish more people would say, "I don't know," or "We messed it up," when they don't know something or have messed it up.
