Anyone getting an iPad?

Looks like the iPad will be getting multitasking with the iPhone OS 4.0. It's weird that it will be available for phones this summer but not until the fall for iPad.

I'm sure there will be some additional features in the 4.0 update for iPad; today's conference really focused on iPhone/iPod. I'm hoping for a better file/document management system.

Just ordered this case today, btw:

I've always admired waterfield cases, but this is the first time they hit the price/feature sweet spot for me.

never thought I would say it, but I love using the thing as an e-reader. Didnt think I could give up real books...and I am quite sure I would be able to fully, but I am definitely enjoying it more then I ever thought I would.

I don't believe it is true multitasking though. There are a handful of apps that will allow you to use them in the background (music, VoIP, and a couple of others). But you wont be able to multitask with everything.

Actually, that is correct. The multitasking isn't "true" multitasking in developer's terms since the apps aren't actually running in the background. Instead Apple's just made the 7 services available in the background. It's up to the app developer to add the features to their app to use multitasking.

That's true, but it's not limited to a handful of functions. Having an app "sleep" while you're doing something else will approximate across-the-board multitasking from the user's perspective. Yes, app developers will have to update their apps to turn this feature "on", but that shouldn't be surprising - it's a major OS update like any other.

Here's a link that summarizes the functionality, for those interested:

well I am definitely loving this thing...tho its costing me a fortune. I finally upgraded to a wireless router for my house. Dont know about others, but my ipad has no trouble getting connected and staying connected no matter where I go in my house...or even outside my house. Between ipad apps, ibooks and music and tv series (the music and tv I would have bought regardless) I have dropped another 150-200 this past week on itunes :rotfl: this is going to be a very costly toy for me.

The DBF just bought one tonight. I have no clue how it's working yet... he's playing with it in the living room & I'm on the Dis lol. I'm sure he'll come show me soon. Hopefully he won't have any problems with it......... (fingers crossed)

it pretty easy to get the hang of...even I figured it out :lmao:

I took the plunge on Monday morning.

I was fine not getting it on release day - honestly. Then Yvette and Emiel came to the house with theirs. Damn Dutch people!!

I actually had dreams about it on Saturday night and was horrified on Sunday morning (Easter) when I learned that Best Buy was CLOSED, as was the Apple Store. I'm pretty sure if Jesus were here, he'd want people to get the iPad. And before you say it's sacrilige, we celebrate the dead coming back to life by eating ham and chocolate, I don't think I'm out of line for wanting an iPad.

I did have to go to Best Buy anyway in advance of the European trip to get external drives, flash drives, camera tapes, etc. I told myself if they had any, I would buy one, if not - I would wait. I was not going to go running around Orlando to find one (at least this was the internal dialouge I was having in a pathetic effort to convince myself that I wasn't obsessed - it's like saying "I'll go into the bar, and if they have any alcohol I'll drink it").

Sure enough, Best Buy had just received a shipment about 20 minutes before I arrived. I'm now convinced that I'm not paranoid in thinking that they have spotters outside my house that call ahead "he's leaving the driveway - STOCK THE STORE".

To say I'm addicted to my iPad is an understatement. eTicket looks FABULOUS on it as do many other of my iPhone apps. I highly recommend the Skeeball app for the iPhone - it's COMPLETELY addictive. It's just like being back on the Jersey shore except without the hookers and the drug dealers.

I've probably spent about $200 in new apps and books - and yes, as a book reader it's an absolute Kindle killer. I love my Kindle but I haven't touched it since Monday.

The battery life is impressive - I'm getting a real 10 hours of useage out of it throughout the day. And I guess I'm the only person NOT having WiFi issues. My signal remains fairly strong througout the house - then again, I have two independent WiFi connections to ensure that every square inch of the house is saturated. I must be entertained at all times.

Seriously, the real question that still remains for me is will this be something I can use productively. If all I do is read books and play skeeball on the thing, I've just pissed away $700 (yes, I got the 64gb). The keyboard is a definate step up from the iPhone, but it's no replacement for my MacBook Pro. There are some interesting productivity apps, but apparently - until I'm grand master skee-ball champion, I won't use any of them.

We'll see if I still love it when I get back from Europe!

Pete, will you be downloading any of your photos to the iPad while on the trip?

I can see taking the Ipad as a replacement for a netbook on our trips. I like the idea of the adaptor to connect your memory cards/camera. But would like to hear first hand experience :goodvibes

Pete- I agree with your addicted sentiment, but not about the look/feel of iPhone apps on the iPad, unfortunately. Too small in iPhone mode, and dreadfully low-res in pixel doubled mode.

Re: productivity apps, people should take a look at Air Sharing HD. I've been too cheap to shell out the 10 bucks for it, but I've heard great things. It lets you mount your iPad as a wireless drive on a Mac for file transferring, and unlike other sharing apps, it also lets you launch files from within the app into other iPad apps (such as pages) for editing. It even has some basic network printing functionality; just may be the file management app that seals the deal on iPad as a laptop replacement for some of us.

Oh, and I haven't tried skeeball, but I'm somewhat addicted to We Rule, a little kingdom-building game that's free. If anyone wants to connect in the game to expand our kingdoms, my name in there is gkrykewy too!

Thanks for the post, Pete! Isn't it funny how we justify things, especially when it comes to technology. I'm glad you're enjoying it. I'll be curious to hear how it continues to work out for you. I'm worried I'd love it at first and download a bunch of apps but after a few months the novelty would wear off.

I'm also worried about the productivity side. I was reading some posts last night about iWork. Apparently even though Apple markets iWork for iPad as a full function productivity sweet, it seems to have issues. The blogger noted that Keynote corrupted files. Presentations did not appear on the iPad as they do in in the original. Worse part is that when you export it from the iPad back to the Mac it remains corrupted. Comments posted indicate there are also issues with Pages. Hopefully Apple will release an update that resolves these issues.

I definitely want to get a tablet device. I'm just going to wait for more options. If I get the iPad I'll probably wait until iPhone OS 4 is out.

Agreed. Love mine. I am assuming you got the iPad update for skeeball... So glad I didn't have to buy a new version. Civ revolutions is awesome. Love iBooks even more than the kindle app even if the kindle selection is better. Something I find psychologically pleasing about the animated page turn. This will be even better when iPhone os 4 comes out... I'm dying for the folders ability I have on my jail broken iPhone

Me too. I can remote into my home or work computers from the iPad so I have no need to bring my MacBook with me. Probably setup my laptops at home and rdp if I need access.. Otherwise I typed a 10 page paper on the iPad the other night... Not as good as a real keyboard but I could always pack one with me if I need it. Otherwise Internet and photo rule on here. Once iPhone os4 comes out I can get incoming Skype calls as well.

I'm wondering if this is a PEBKAC error. I wrote a paper and have done a few keynote presentations and have had no issues at all. Sync worked fine, no corruption, etc.
