It's Just Normal Routine Around Town here

Over the last couple of weeks, I've been out and about town keeping pretty much a normal routine.

I don't always need to stay on the safe and narrow.

I've been known to go a little off the beaten track to enjoy a few of our alleys and laneways in Melbourne.

I always make it a point to look up every now and again. You never know what you'll see!

The back lanes do offer colour that you don't normally find in the fast lane.

I was even reminded that you can take it easy anywhere you are or whatever the surrounds may appear to be!

I've been very good at only window shopping. There will always be something that I WANT to buy…..but truth be known, there’s nothing that I really NEED to get.

Well....with the exception of food.

We are rather blessed in having a decent market in the heart of the city. The Queen Victoria Market has been operating as an open-air market since 1878. Before that, it was the site of the Melbourne Cemetery. Over 50% of the seven hectare space is dedicated to food stalls.

I tend to visit the market on a fortnightly basis with friends. We pick up our meats....

....Fish.....

....Deli goods.....

...And fruit and vegetables.

As part of my normal routine, my friends and us go to breakfast afterwards. Breakfast is usually my favourite meal of the day. Afterall, you can have something savoury.....

......Something cooked....

....Or something sweet!

I have to admit; this countdown to September still seems like an awful long way away. But there are days when I count my blessings for 'normal routine'.

The markets look wonderful! I've seen something similar in Boston, but not here. Maybe at the place where you guys hit straight off the plane in LA, but I've never been there so I don't know what it's like.

You're daily life is a lot more interesting than mine!

Love the market....

I am so looking forward to the Markets in Spain.

I am so looking forward to seeing your pictures of the markets in Spain! :teeth:

The Farmer's Market.

I haven't seen anything similar in LA yet. I think there's a similar market in Seattle and Faneuille Hall in Boston. And when the Farmer's Market is out at the Ferry Building, there's something similar in San Francisco itself.

Hmm....might be interesting to do a little research to see what other markets are available in the US or where the fresh food is sold.

I'm with Alison, your daily life is way more interesting than mine too. :thumbsup2 Great shots. The markets look great. The food looks yum!

It's all a matter of perspective. We're pretty boring from where I'm looking at things. ::yes::

Faneuille Hall in Boston is what I'm thinking of. We don't have any permanent markets here unless the Grove is like that. You've been there, I haven't. Isn't that sad!

Our Farmer's markets are temporary. They bring their own tarp and tables and stuff and after the market is over you wouldn't even know they had one there that day.

The Farmer's Market at the Grove has the food stalls; but it isn't quite like the fresh food market.

You and Fran might need to make a trip to check it out sometime. ;)

Mickey Micro Cosmos #3 – Agaricus bisporus

Agaricus bisporus is known variously when white as common mushroom, button mushroom, white mushroom, cultivated mushroom, table mushroom, champignon mushroom, cremini/crimini mushroom (when brown as Swiss brown mushroom, Roman brown mushroom, Italian brown, Italian mushroom, brown cap mushrooms, chestnut mushroom).
When mature, I call it large cap mushroom but it seems that it might be better known as Portobello mushroom in the US.

Ain’t language grand???? :rotfl:

It is one of the most commonly and widely consumed mushrooms in the world.

Portobello Mushrooms is listed as one of the sides for our cookout and I’m responsible for this.
Okay, I am not planning on cooking this in the microwave; but I do normally cook this on a BBQ during summer. Still, I’m not quite sure how this will work out on the little charcoal broilers at BCV.

Assuming that it works, we will need enough of these ingredients for 12 people.

Yes, it really is 3 ingredients:
  • Portobello Mushrooms, stalks removed
  • Pesto
  • Feta cheese, sliced

Using a little oil, place the mushrooms gill side down. Cook for about 2 – 3 minutes.

Turn over and cook the cap for 5 minutes or so.

During this time, place the feta slices into the mushroom.

I wasn’t happy with how the cheese was turning out, so I gave them a quick turn on the frying pan. On the BBQ, the heat does tend to warm up the feta more than it was going in the pan.

Add a generous dollop of pesto on top about a minute before you’re ready to serve the mushroom. I gage it from the cap. It needs to have collapsed a little in height.

The finished dish! DH is happy to have this as a main course for dinner and it is surprisingly filling.

I'm thinking that if we haven't got space on the broiler, we might cook this on the stove?

BTW mushrooms do cook well in the micro!

Those look very tasty, I hope that they will be small enough so that I can have one of those, some potato salad, cucumber salad, tri tip....
