Anyone Game? It’s my Sep 2013 Blog! I'm home; with a TR link in #1189, 10/14

PIO, I think your rice looks delicious! It's bad for me to read this when the kitchen is just steps away. I want to EAT!

I agree with the others, more often and local DISmeets are a great idea. :) Lunch looks good too.

Of course you can buy small bottles of kepac mani in the supermarket and carry one with you????? (We have all sorts of food supplements snuck into our suitcase when travelling). Your fried rice looks very nice but I agree, it'd be even more fantastic with that added. On a side note I was excited to discover a branch of the Japanese Daiso store (200Y type store) has opened in the Brisbane Myer Centre-a complete transplant of a Japanese store with everything in Japanese-but what excited me was it included a range of Japanese sauces and stock and dried noodles, seaweed etc-ones not stocked in local Asian foodmarts or supermarkets. Yaay. Enjoyed a non-home made Tongatsu sauce with pork dish last night!

Thank you. Did you get something to eat??

:thumbsup2

Wendy - I did contemplate it until very recently. franandaj had a bottle of wine break in their check-in baggage for a recent trip. Seems to me like a very high regret factor as I do not want to be washing kecap manis out of my clothes and bags. :upsidedow

You know....there is a Daiso shop in Melbourne as well. Lots of $2.80 specials. :thumbsup2 Wish I had thought about it when you were in town. You and your DD could have visited the store as it was literally around the corner from where we were, entrance on Swanston Street.

(Maybe you found it?)

In any event, enjoy the Brisbane shop. :thumbsup2

I'm not quite sure what you are saying in the above paragraph, but you do realize that with the information you have given me in this post that I live closer to Disneyland than you live to your mother.... :scratchin . :rolleyes1

Lol! I always assumed you lived farther away, because I thought you always got a room when you went to Disneyland. We are driving from Anaheim to LAX to fly to Orlando, and Crap said it would likely be a 1.5 to 2 hour drive. I was thinking about the same for you. Maybe, you live far from the airport or he is overestimating how much time it will take us to get there. Anyway, I knew I only had one full day (not as flexible for you as if I had more days for you to choose from), and did not want you to go out of your way since you were already going earlier that month. If you live closer than I live to my MIL, I would love to see you. How awesome to live that close to Disneyland! I always tell Crap I would go all the time of we lived closer.

We will have to try and tee something up, one of these years.

I would really like that.

Your fried rice looks amazing. Crap's family always teases him, because he is the only one in his family who does not like white rice. My in-laws have it at least twice a day. He does however LOVE fried rice. I wish I made it better, so he did not have to order it out so much. I will have to give your recipe a try one day and cook it for him. Father's Day seems as good a day as any to try it.

Wow that fried rice looks yummy :thumbsup2 Maybe I can try making it for dinner (minus the prawns...) :rolleyes1

The rice looks yummy, and I am guessing I have never had with the kecap manis, but you know me, willing to try anything...

So Hong Kong fried rice has no soy sauce in it? :confused3 Hmmmmm.... :scratchin I often find myself adding soy sauce to fried rice from some restaurants, I guess that's because they make it Hong Kong style.

You do realize that it was not a bottle that broke in my suitcase. I have never had a problem with bottles. It was a bag like this that tore in my suitcase.

I would be happy to start looking for kecap manis and transport it to WDW. In fact you now have me curious as to what it tastes like. We have a ton of Thai and Cambodian folks in Long Beach, do you think their grocery stores would stock it?

Oh no, we don't ALWAYS get a room at DL, in fact I'm going out there today to have a drink or two with ACDSNY, then coming back home to fix dinner. We only get a room if we are doing something late that involves drinking or want to make a rope drop or something like that. We often go out there just to have lunch and shop.

Crap is not wrong to allow 1.5 to 2 hours to get to LAX, but in all likelihood, you would make it there in 45 minutes if the traffic isn't bad. The problem is that you can never count on the traffic, so you need to plan for the worst. I've timed the trip to DL on numerous occasions and it's usually about 27 minutes from the front of my house to pulling up to park.

When PIO and I had to go home and check on Fran, it took less that 1.5 hours out of our day to drive, see that Fran was OK, and turn around and come back.

Your fried rice is looking good!

For my tastes, I miss the kecap manis. But really, I think this will make a cracking alternative without the stress of trying to source the kecap manis.

I've seen kecap manis in sachets just trying to remember where! My guess would be the Asian store near the Queen Vic Market or a shop I frequent in Footscray. I'll keep an eye out for you.

It also works well with chicken or pork. :thumbsup2

Mmmm, looks yummy!

It is!

It is a sweeter and thicker version of soya sauce.

Actually, I didn't realise it was a bag of wine. I just assumed it was a bottle. Hmm.....

Yes. The Thai and Cambodian folks in Long Beach would most probably have kecap manis. If you don't find it, let me know.

I've had fried rice in the US and it's pretty much the Cantonese way of frying rice (no soya sauce).

Too bad I didn't have chicken or pork either :rolleyes2 It worked out alright with just veggies though :thumbsup2

Glad it worked out. :thumbsup2

No, I didn't. I try not to eat right before bed. I don't sleep well when I do, get a little heartburn, and wake up groggy. :crazy2:

:goodvibes I also try not to eat right before bed as well. I don't get heartburn but I just cant get to sleep with a super full stomach.

The first Countdown

In 18 week's time, I’ll be in California.
In 20 week's time, I’ll be nearly at WDW.

And in one of those contradictory oxymoronic topics that seem to appeal to my sense of humour, I've been giving some thought to what I could or could not achieve in the next 18 or 20 weeks.

You gals know what I'm talking about.

I haven't really bothered about it in the last couple trips; preferring instead to keep 'Constant Vigilance' on myself. But this year, I've found that I've been slowly and steadily been creeping up. Yup. It’s the post about weight loss.

I've been thinking long and hard about whether to set a weight loss, fitness challenge for myself. Afterall, every girl wants to look their best when they see their pal Mickey, don’t they?

The tipping point for me? It was sitting in one of those motivational sessions at work where the speaker was talking about striking a better balance between work and life. He was definitely advocating that we need to exercise more in order to keep ourselves healthy.
So it is....that I'm sitting here; typing this out.

20 weeks could mean somewhere between 10 - 20 lbs weight loss (5 - 10 kg). I know I can aim for this.

Going by more numbers.....In the next 20 weeks, I'm going to aim to get some form of exercise for around 50 minutes each day. I don't run. But I can walk, cycle or do some sit-ups whilst watching TV.

And if nothing else, at least it is something to keep me motivated and active over the next 20 weeks.

I'm also going to be cutting down on the quantity of food that I eat. Yeah. Pretty ironic considering that I’m in the midst of testing out Mickey Micro recipes. But then the amount of food that I might consume does not have to equate to the amount of food I cook; right?
So, here's to the 18/20 week countdown!

Excuse me whilst I go do 20 push-ups! (I know I can, I know I can.....)

Good for you! :goodvibes

If you're interested in tracking calories there are several web programs / apps you can use. My current favorite is MyFitnessPal. I've been tracking calories with it and it helps immensely and I feel as though I can make better choices.

The only thing I would caution you about is working out every day. Don't beat yourself up if it doesn't happen. That's a pretty hefty commitment. My initial goal was three times a week, last week, I did four. I'm slowly working my way up, but that is just my personality.

Best of luck!!! :goodvibes

PIO I am so IN I remember very well our DisMeet a few years ago you had me on the cell phone & kept saying turn around, turn around, and there you were :rotfl: I MISS you and can't wait to see you again Now I will go and enjoy the blog :thumbsup2 Ruthie (and I know you can achieve your goals !)

Good luck. I know you can do it. I recently started back at the gym myself (although my workouts are around 30 minutes, so I have to build up to 50). Eating healthy is not my thing, so I am attempting portion control as well. I want to look good for the mouse too but mostly I just want to lose enough weight for my hiatal hernia to go away.

I am going to print that whole section out and frame it for those occasional days

Mickey Micro Cosmos #2 - Special Fried Rice

One of the things that might work for the cookout as a side is fried rice. Being of South East Asian descent, the style of fried rice we cook involves soya sauce and/or kecap manis.

And there lies the issue - Kecap manis is an ingredient that might not be readily available. I've googled it and know that I can make my own if I had brown sugar and soya sauce.....but really! I'm on holiday!!

The finished dish!

For my tastes, I miss the kecap manis. But really, I think this will make a cracking alternative without the stress of trying to source the kecap manis.

Ir looks delish !! BUT Kecap Manis I see it all over the internet http://www.efooddepot.com/products/abc/2964/abc_kecap_manis_(sweet_soy_sauce)__hypen__21fl_oz.html should I order it and then I can bring it to you ?
