So I went to the doc today because of some crazy back pain and was diagnosed with a kidney stone after an Xray. I didn't know a kidney stone could cause that type of pain..I am used to spending 45 minutes a day on the elliptical, walking miles around the neighborhood for exercise, and spending tons of time on my feet. This morning I could hardly stomach the 10 minutes standing at the bus stop. So I knew something was wrong.

How long before this thing comes out? The doc prescribed me $47 worth of meds..since they are just pain relievers, I am not sure if I am going to fill them yet. We'll just see how I do. Right now I don't have a lot of pain UNLESS I am moving around.. I am fine if I am sitting/laying down. So my current thinking is I will just take it easy for a few days if it saves me almost $50. Not sure if this is a wise plan or not!!! She prescribed me Skelaxan (sp) and Vicodin.

Any advice from those who have BTDT?

I've had 5 over the years and generally the pain starts only when the stone is moving or blocking something. Standing, moving, laying down made no difference. When the pain hits bad, if it does, you'll need the meds. My pain would last a few hours then stop. It would come and go. I think everyone has a different experience. they always had to take mine out - except for the last one. Not much fun. good luck.

BTW when I got the first one I was in training for a marathon - conditioning has little or nothing to do with it.

Once the stone is gone though, it's all good.

My mom just had surgery for a large kidney stone. It was made of calcium so must have been caused by diet, perhaps diabetes medicine instead. She didn't have too much pain. I guess it was because it was so large it did not move.

About the pain medication. Do you want to take a chance and not get them, then find out in the middle of the night you need them? I don't know, it's your call.

Are you going to have surgery?

My DH had huge amounts of pain with his kidney stone awhile back. Ended up in the hospital pumping him full of IV fluids to try to push it out. Seriously, they put in 4 bags of fluids before sending him home. :confused3 I thought the poor guy was going to rupture. And then when he finally passed the thing it was so stinkin small!! He was so mad that something so small could hurt soooo bad!!

My poor DH has suffered with kidney stones :guilty: ...

From what I have experienced with my DH, it depends on where the kidney stone is actually located in the ureters and the size of the kidney stone that will play a part in determining how long it will take to come out ... sometimes the stone may be too big to pass through on it's own, (but the xray should have showed its size) ... the pain is the worse when the stone in traveling down the ureters into the bladder, which may take some time, again depending on where the stone is ...

I would definitely get your prescriptions filled just in case and to have them on hand... the pain can fluctuate ... my DH usually does better after he receives the shot for pain in the ER (and then gets a pain med prescription filled to come home with) ... then he just continutes to drink a lot of water for a few days and follow up with his urologist ...

I hope you feel better soon and the stone passes quickly ...

I've had several.

You may not pass it right away. It can rest in your bladder for a while. Once it gets down there, though, you won't have anymore pain. It hurts a little bit coming out, but absolutely nothing like it does when it's coming down (what you're experiencing now).

It's an excrutiating pain, I know. Hopefully, it won't last too long. Do not be afraid to ask for more pain medication if it still hurts after yours runs out. Doctors understand just how painful it is.

I've always passed mine, but I know sometimes the doctors have to help them come out (breaking them up with lasers first and/or inserting some sort of basket - not too sure about all that as I've not had it done).

Oh, and you're lucky if you can find a position where it doesn't hurt. When I have them, there's absolutely nothing that will take away the horrible pain (except pain killers).

Just thinking about my kidney stone makes me "shudder." Mine hurt so bad I couldn't walk, my poor mother had to drive my sorry self to the er in the middle of the night because I thought I was going to die haha. They pass in a couple days if they are too small to do anything about. Like the others said if it starts to hurt DON'T hesitate to take your meds it will only get worse. Thankfully I haven't gotten another since I hope you don't either!

I agree. I'd go ahead and get them. It's cheaper than a visit to the ER in the middle of the night and if the pain gets bad enough that nothing will stop it, you will want relief no matter what it takes. I've even thought dying wouldn't be so bad when I was in the middle of them.

I've had them off and on for many years. A few times I had to go to the ER. Sometimes I had severe throwing up. It's the worst pain I've ever had. Last time I waited in the ER for hours but the stone passed on it's own not long after that. One time I had a surgical procedure (when I was 9 mos. pregnant). Most times I've had lithotripsy (sp?) done. My last two tries did not even break up this "super stone" that I have. Luckily it doesn't hurt but I'll be crying if it tries to come out.

Please have some pain killer on hand just in case!!!!!!!

I had one for awhile that kept not showing up on the tests-I had a ct scan and an IVP at the time and even though I was in pain it showed nothing-then one night I wake up in the worst pain.Went to ER and they found that I had a stone that was stuck coming out of the kidney and it ripped a hole that was leaking urine into my body and had some toxic poisining.I was in the hospital for a week and they removed the stone and had to put in a tube to let the uterer heal for 2 weeks. That was wen I was 22 about 12 years ago.I have had others since then and they were not as bad and I passed them. When I had my dd I said it is true what they say a kidney stone does hurt more than giving birth!Good luck it hurts till it's gone.My MIL just had the sound wave procedure where they put you in the tub and break it up because she had one that was too large to pass and that worked good for her.

My Dh who has a very high tolerance for pain had one last year. I really thought the man was going to die. He was doubled over and in tears. After the diagnosis, he, like you didn't fill the script immediately. The next morning at 7am guess who was at CVS waiting for the pharmacist:rolleyes1 (not him)

I had one in Jan of this year. I felt like I was dying. The only thing that even relieved the pain a little bit was sitting in a giant tub of water. Crazy I know...I went to the ER 3 times before they finally got the clue that they needed to take the thing out. Luckily they did because after surgery the doctor told me it was lodged in there and would have never came out on its own.

OMG! Kidney stones!

I had my first one this past December. It was horrible. Thank goodness it was very small! For some strange reason I didn't have pain during the day but it would hit at night for several nights in a row.

Ok, I have a very high tolerance for pain. I've had two c-sections that were nothing...nothing! to recover from.

I had a kidney stone this year that knocked me for a loop. I had no idea what was wrong with me. Dh took me to the urgent care because he was pretty sure it was a kidney stone. The dr examined me, was almost positive it was a kidney stone (might have been a ruptured appendix), gave me a shot that would help only if it was kidney related. Twenty minutes later, the dr walked back in (once the shot had started to work) and I would have sworn that I had never seen that man before in my life. That's how "out of it" I was. I mean, I was not even crying--the pain was far beyond tears. I had been truly delirious from the pain. The shot relieved the pain and I felt human again. It took about two days for me to pass it, but I stayed on the meds and was fine.

Get the pain meds. Have them if you need them. You might pass it just fine, but don't take a chance. There was no way I could have driven myself to the hospital. I seriously doubt I could have called 911!

I've had several.

It felt like I was kicked in the groin, and then kicked again, and repeatedly kicked and kicked and kicked.

So, if any women here have had kidney stones, you know what it feels like to get kicked in the "stones." :rotfl2:

THAT'S why we're so protective of that area!

Go get a 20-oz (i.e. big one) Beer and drink it as fast as you can.

Trust me.
