:rotfl:

pretty funny for a girly girl ;)

HEY, girly girls can be other things besides girly! I challenge you to a game of Old Sow, buddy! ;)

Yep. Our cub scouts did one every year at various locations on our Navy Base (wherever the Natural Resources guys told us to). Our Boy Scouts have adopted a road and do it once a quarter.

Did I scare you with my challenge, monkeyboy? :smooth:

Our Church gets a volunteer group that would do a clean up for the grade school and the playground every spring.

It happened on a top secret mission for the CIA and if I told you, I'd have to kill you.... ;)

I don't want to know that bad! :D
I think I got tricked by your tag.

I don't know what this game is, but can I play, too, Jolie? ;)

Our entire city actually does a clean up every May, for the entire month. Basically it means that the garbage people will take anything, including entire trees, windows, garbage, appliances, etc. The only things they charge for are fridges and stoves. Other than that, if you put it out with your garbage, they will take it, and I LOVE it. It encourages people to get rid of their garbage and such and it is very helpful for people like me who don't own pick-ups to haul tons of garbage. It also gives the members of our town "Work camp" (aka minimum security prison) something to do besides just sit around because they are the ones called up to help with all of this garbage.

Knight, I know what Old Sow is, and I don't think you would want to play unless being smacked with a stick is your idea of a good time. I have scars from that game on my hands. It is a game where you try and hit a can with a stick into a center hole in the ground while the rest of the players are trying to keep you from doing it. However, the rest of the players have holes surrounding the center hole and if they take their stick out of their hole and you can get your stick into the hole, then they are then "it." If you can get the can into the center hole, everyone but you has to drop their sticks and run to a designated point and back. It is fun, but dangerous, depending on who you play with.

Sorry this is way off the thread topic.

I have done this is in inner city North Philadelphia. For those who are not familiar, North Philadelphia is a very challenging part of the city.. poverty, drugs, you name it.

For two years, we did a clean a thon for charity. Instead of a walk/run for charity, we pledged to clean as many vacant lots as our pledges.

First we go into a rough rough area. For the suburbanites, it was an eye opening experience. We did have "local" escorts from the local ODAAT chapter, and the health clinic (the cause we were supporting). These "escorts" walked us to the neighborhood, and we got to work. We saw lots of needles, and other things. We had to wear two sets of rubber gloves and then work gloves (the canvas kind) over the rubber gloves. It was wonderful cleaning the lots...

There was so much work to do , but it was wonderful work. First the locals were wondering what we were doing.. we were out there singing deep gospel music, raking, hoeing, and clearing out trash. (I can't tell you how many colt 45 bottles we found). Then as the lots were getting cleared, they would come by and say "Praise Jesus". and "Thank You". It was wonderful to see this neighborhood reaction.

First it was scary getting started, we did get jeers from the locals, and from others. As soon as they saw the local "escorts", they were much more accommodating.

I have to tell you about what we saw. So many beer/liquor bottles, needles, crack vials. The funniest thing happened though, I was raking away and found a $1 bill. Then I figured I would give that to the charity. I then said jokingly to the sky "OK, God give me a $20!" THen I start raking again in the same spot, what do I find... a $20 bill! That went into the charity envelope!

has done several local clean up days,, our largest employer sets one up area wide every year ,, maybe twice a year spring and fall,, not sure but fairly often, the whole town gets involved, they provid ethe bags teh pick up, the area get cleaned, the company exchanges trash for tissue, ( is a paper maker company) you turn in the bags and get a case of paper products they ussually try and ste certain areas for weach participant.

Wow CindyB! That was quite a clean up. Scarey yet rewarding. Good job!

The first year our city had clean-up, you could put anything out but tires and paint cans. The sidewalks were lined and heaping with junk. Fred Sanford would have been in heaven! The funniest thing was just sitting out onthe front porch and watchng the "pickers" go through everyone junk. You'd see trucks heaping with stuff they picked up. Couches being walked down the street. It was very entertaining. This year there were limits on how much you could put out. There wasn't near as much junk out.
