Anyone else just DREADING winter?

After tonight's drive home from work (left work at 3:50pm got home at 5:20pm)
my normal commute is 20 mins not 1.5 hrs.

On snow packed/ ice roads with avg speed of 15 mph, spin outs all over.

snow plow guy stuck in between my yard/ nebor driveway, with only part of drive way clean ugh

You can keep your nasty snowy winters, Im so done with winter.

I commented the other day saying I despise winter...

And here we are, two weeks before Thanksgiving, with 13 INCHES on the ground. Fell in about 10 hours. Ugh.

Last year an El Niño fall and winter was predicted in the late summer, but then the predictions kept changing for a drier, warmer winter than average. We ended up having the warmest winter on record while much of the country was in a frozen winter vortex. The same things is happening again this year. A strong El Niño for this part of the country has again weakened.

We had a few storms predicted last year, but they all passed us by. We only had one delayed day and no snow days (and it doesn't take much white stuff out here to have a snow day). Honestly, it was a bit boring.

I'm hoping we get at least one good dump this year, but this drought makes it less likely. Overall though, I only like it when it's snowing and we get to miss a day of school. The aftermath of bitter cold weather along with ice and dirty snow is not appealing. I sympathize with those who will be dealing with that for the next several months.

I must have jinxed the nice weather we were having when I posted this because it was 18 degrees outside this morning! Dry as can be, but too cold for my bones!:crazy2:

I had actually go out buy the kids coats this week because it turn cold. Our coats is actually hoodies. Last year will two or three snowstorms. i hate snow. I live in the South reason. I had put real shoes besides flip flops.

Where are you from? As a northerner I wish I was able to run my AC in my house during November. We have two seasons here in Buffalo.

Season 1: cold and snowy, which lasts forever.
Season 2: nice outside but only last a couple of months.

I'm FROM the Northwest, but I live in North Texas. Two days ago a crazy cold front blew in and I've loved every second of it. Tonight will be 21 degrees... a week from now it's supposed to be back in the 70's!? :confused3

I think my love of winter has to do with childhood nostalgia. I always loved the look of a snowy yard and ice-covered branches. I also always loved the yearly tradition of getting a new winter coat.

I can understand why people dread winter... I lived in Salt Lake City during the 2002 Olympics... driving in that kind of snow is an experience... :crazy2:

I'm from So Cal. We are going to Oregon . We have been so excited to go. to be honest I didn't think it would be super cold or lots of snow. Now that I've been watching the news I'm nervous. I don't think we will be prepared. I have no idea what type of clothes to take. What do you all wear to survive?? Any tips or advice?? We will be in Bend area.

feel free to message me :)

Question are uggs and emu boots weather proof boots for snow and rain or do we need to spray them? What about pants for tubbing?

Uggs and/or Emu boots> NO.. Not unless they are the Non traditional ones.. They are NOT waterproof., and let me tell you, you will FALL if there is any amount of ice at all, if not you will do a nice slide dance ;).. I Have several UGGS, but we have been snow free so far (knock on wood).. I spray mine with Scotchguard every few weeks, I find it just as good as the UGG spray they sell..

I am not from Oregon, but colder areas.. We wear snow pants to tube.. Milder days can be just waterproof pants..

We dress in layers to survive when it hits -45, but those are rare days.. Your blood gets used to it (Sadly).

Dislike it to the point I stay inside the better part of four months every winter. I don't leave the house when it's icy or snowy for any reason. I stock up on everything I need when the roads are dry and hunker down when they're not.

We heat with wood, so our house is cozy all winter. I have the bright SAD lights all over the house and keep the curtains wide open whenever there is a glimmer of sun.
I'm looking forward to the day we'll be able to head South on Jan 1 and not come home until April 1.
Counting down- two more years! :)

We usually like to plan a beach vacation sometime in March or April, but this year it's going to be a family wedding in May in FL. So I'm planning that and going to try to get through what is looking like will be a long, cold winter.

I have to do this too. When I get home from work I have about an hour of daylight left before the sun sets and you bet your bottom dollar I whip open the curtains and let that sun shine in! :thumbsup2

In the evening they are all closed up to conserve heat, but even today while I'm working from home I have all the curtains wide open. Now, my husband will come home tonight (it's dark when he arrives) and shuts everything back up. :rotfl:

I can't stand feeling like I'm living in a cave - I need light streaming in my house or I'm very unproductive. If the curtains are all drawn I just want to sit on the couch cuddled up with a book and hunker down. Curtains open? I'm busy around the house all day. Weird, huh?

I've got quite a few waterproof pants for some reason. I've worn them to football games in the rain and done some winter activities. However, all were pretty much bought at a discount or weren't terribly expensive.

For snow activities you'd probably want at least waterproof membrane with a thick nylon fabric and at least a mesh or nylon lining. I have a pair of pants I bought from The North Face at one of their outlet stores for $80. It uses a breathable polyurethane membrane called "HydroSeal" although it's been discontinued. That one is pretty nice since it has a zipper and Velcro on the sides where I can take it off if I've got something underneath. I've got unlined pants, but they're not suitable for real winter activities. They're good for packing and putting on if I have to trudge through rain. About the best buy I've ever seen was a pair of black Gore-Tex pants from The North Face that I found in a clearance rack at a sporting goods store for $50. They were regular, full-warranty so I couldn't believe it. I tried them on and they fit great. However, an employee pointed out to me that they were a women's model. They didn't seem to be cut for women's hips and there was nothing on the outside identifying them as for women, so I bought them anyways. Next time I go play in the snow I plan on bringing them along.

And trust me that you want waterproof for the snow. I remember my one and only attempt to learn how to ski was wearing jeans. The instructor said that my friend and I would find it miserable. Whenever we fell, the snow would get on our pants and turn to liquid. At the very least not cotton. The ideal would be waterproof pants and non-cotton thermal bottoms. If it's not waterproof, avoid cotton.

I'm heading to the Santa Claus parade in Woodstock Ont. tomorrow. I heard they got a couple of inches of snow today. Now I'm digging out the snow pants and boots. I guess winter is unofficially here. :goodvibes

We had some snows qualls earlier that just totally came out of nowhere :scared:.. Here I was driving away, it was gorgeous, sunny and bamm. Thankfully we have no accumulation, but the weather man (ugh) let us know that next week it will all catch up to us, cold snow, sleet..So I put up my decorations earlier (outdoors).

Have fun and enjoy, ours is next week Downtown:goodvibes

The Adirondack Uggs are what the Teens wear here. The are pricey, but last and last.. In the Rain, it is the Hunter Boot with the Socks..

I agree with blcla. North Face, the last thing you want is snow inside your pants, leg whatever... We have tried the non name Wal mart or other, and it really just goes right through.

I hate those snow squalls. We were supposed to drive up tonight, but I said forget it.

It's good that your outdoor decorations are up! :thumbsup2

I'm actually quite brand agnostic, although I generally insist on quality brands where I don't worry about them falling apart - like The North Face, Mountain Hardwear, Outdoor Research, Patagonia, or Marmot. I probably can't name all the brands I would trust off the top of my head, but like obscenity I'll know it if I see it. There are moderately priced brands like Columbia and Helly-Hansen. There are also the really pricey brands like Arc'Teyrx. There are also the snowboarding brands like Burton and skiing brands like Obermeyer, Spyder, or Descente. However, those tend to be insulated, and I prefer no insulation so that I can layer with my own thermal underwear.

Even if it's not strictly waterproof, at least a pair of synthetic soft-shell pants with a water repellent finish (and retreat as needed) helps. I got my wife a pair of Isis soft-shell pants although I'm not sure if they still fit after she gave birth.

God, yes. I've got a painful skin condition that flares up when it is cold, and I am absolutely miserable right now, even though I'm sitting in a fully-heated office, because the walk in this morning did me in.n
