Anyone else bothered by loud music in restaurants?

This weekend my DH and I walked out of two restaurants without even sitting down because the music (rock) was too loud. I have no problem with light background music but can't stand the rock/rap they play in most of the chain restaurants.

Maybe we are just getting old (mid 40s) but don't you think that the volume of music in restaurants and stores is way up from the past?

It's not the music that bothers me, it's the room temperature! They got the cold air blowing and it's freezing! I usually end up with a hot coffee in my hands.

I know what you mean! Somehow I always get placed right under the spot where the cold air is blowing. BBRRRRR

But yes, the loud music in restaurants really does get on my nerves! Makes me want to go crazy!

yes and in stores!
One that my mom loves always has music blaring, its her favourite store but she cant stand to go in there!

I don't think it has anything to do with age. I am 25 and I usually leave the restaurant with a headache and I hate having to practically yell for the person across the table to hear me! As for the temp I have taken to bringing a sweater when we go out. I get some strange looks from people when it is hotter than blazes outside and here I am carrying a sweater.

I used to be a host at an Applebee's and the there were two settings for the music volume. A lower setting for the midmorning/early afternoon crowd and a louder setting for the dinner crowd. I must have gone into the office everyday asking for the music to be turned down. People have gotten up and left without ordering because of it.

It was interesting to know that we had different radio stations playing depending on what result we were after. If we wanted people to sit and enjoy their meals and order more, we would playh the generic "taped" music with no commericials. When it was time to get ready to close for the night, we would put on some whacked out station that nobody wanted to listen to and they would all leave. LOL.

I can't recall problems at restaurants, though we rarely go to the chain restaurants where it might occur.

Where we have had a major problem is at bowling alleys. We all love to bowl but I refuse to go anymore. They blast the music so loud that I usually have a pounding headache within 30 minutes and its impossible to talk with the people I'm with without screaming. Just not my idea of a good time. And I don't think its just an age thing either because my daughter is only 8 and she feels the same way.

I feel like I end up swallowing my food whole because it stresses me out so much. The stores I will and have walked out on. Restaurants I ask them to please turn it down.

It bothers me if I don't like their music selection. We love to eat at Logan's Steakhouse, but they blare country music. I don't like country music, so we don't eat there too often.

Lone Star Steakhouse is the same way -- occasionally way too loud. I've asked that it be turned down ... especially when I cannot hear the conversation I'm having with the person seated next to me.

What is miss is the servers doing some line dancing throughout the evening. Now that was fun to watch.

This happened to us yesterday. I couldn't talk to my DH about an upcoming trip he has.

On a positive note, I couldn't hear my two DD's fight over the green and orange crayons. LOL

About a month ago, DW and I were in the Planet Hollywood on Times Square, and the was literally so loud that I moved to the other side of the table just so we could hear each other talk....Yes, i know it's a "touristy" kinda place, and they promote a "party" atmosphere, but I mean you literally had to shout to be heard from three feet away

I know they say if it's too loud you're too old....But geez :teeth:

My bug is when those low rider cars come up near you at a stop light and my car is bouncing from the clown next to me, who thinks he is the only guy on the road, listening to something that sounds like the Bears' 'Superbowl Shuffle' from the mid 80's. And that is while enroute to the restaurant, LOL.

I'm an old fuddy-duddy, too. I don't know why, I just don't like loud anything--in restaurants, movies, even at home. Can't tell you the number of times I've said to my kids, "Turn down the TV, I really don't think the neighbors are interested in listening to it."

I have to admit, I don't notice it as much in restaurants. But then again, I eat out pretty rarely.

Try Bongo's at DTD!!!! DH and I coundn't even get all the way inside. A Latino band was playing and there would have been NO WAY we, or anyone else, could have spoken at all while they played. Not sure how the wait staff was able to communicate with the diners. Way, way over the top. And I used to be in a rock band! :rockband:

I totally agree! There is way too much noise polution in this world! LOL

I had a situation with my dentist's office a few years ago, involving this issue. It seems that Friday's are "let down your hair" day, and of course the only day that I can get to the dentist is Friday. One Friday I walked into the waiting room to blaring rock music, and they kept playing the same song, loudly, over and over. Going to the dentist is anxiety provoking enough without listening to an electric guitar before a root canal! After five minutes I couldn't take it anymore, and I went home!

Restaurants? Try stores! It's especially bad in malls. You'll be walking along and you can hear the music from the dance club....I men A&F store., which is 6 stores away! Do people shop there or go clubbin'? Other stores have been as bad, but A&F is always that way. Maybe they play the loud crap to repel old fogies like me, who prefer a classier atmosphere.

Another case happened at a Media Play. The cashiers wanted tunes, so they were blasting gangster rap from a shelf stereo display in front of the checkout area. It was so loud that some people walked in the door and turned right around and left. There was a suggesstion box up front, so I used it.

Yes!!!!! And in stores too.

And if they must blast it, I don't understand why they can't play cheesy pop music, or soft rock or something else that is gernally acceptable to all.

I was in AJ Wright (a store) yesterday and they had some sort of expletive ridden rap on , and I mean BLARING through the store.

I've taken to bringing a zip-up sweat-shirt with me EVERYWHERE in the summer, because most places have the A/C cranked up all the way! Not just restaurants, but malls, movie theaters, grocery stores, you name it. I don't even wear shorts any more unless I'll be outside for more than 1/2 hour.
