Hi all,
We are headed to SSR (first time there, can't wait!) in 26 days and I have to admit this Swine Flu issue (don't want to call it an epidemic) has me a little worried. Anyone else feel this way? Or is the media again hyping it up for shock value? Thanks for your replies!

Not really, you can catch it anywhere, DW & I are leaving for WDW Sunday and just plan on having a good time, if it happens it happens.

UGHHHHHHH.....the media! :headache:

It's always good to keep your hands washed and cover your mouth when you cough, especially at amusement parks and on airplanes. It wouldn't be news if they didn't make you afraid. You don't want to live in fear, though, so just enjoy yourself and keep the Purell close by!

buy a couple small pocket-size bottles of hand sanitizer and use it often....otherwise go and enjoy

Hype, hype and more hype. You'd think it was the superflu from "The Stand", for pete's sake. :lmao:

In another week or so, people will realize that bodies aren't piling up in the streets, ratings will go down, and the media will find some other story to hyperventilate about.

And no, I wouldn't be the least bit nervous about going to WDW. There are ALWAYS guests with contagious illnesses at WDW. Everything from chickenpox to the flu to Noroviruses, you name it, there are bugs there any day of the week that can make you sicker than swine flu.

Besides, anything you can catch at WDW, you can catch at your job, at your local mall, at your kid's little league game. Everywhere that people gather, there are bugs.

Still... keep washing your hands and keep some type of wipes or foam or spray to keep you hands germ or virus free. Don't touch your face with your hands... This is not a typical virus.... The greatest danger is to be too lax about it. There are bugs everywhere, but you don't want to get this one. So just be diligent. And then forget it... enjoy...

I am not worried at all, to me it is like the "disease of the day" similar to the panic they caused a few years ago in NY (where I live) with the West Nile Virus. The media is doing there best at scaring people, for example the school here in NY where the kids got sick, the media is reporting "hundreds of kids" have been sickened when the actual number of confirmed cases is a fraction of that. I am not saying they don't have the swine flu but the media makes it seem like there are hundreds of confirmed cases when the real number according to the latest reports is 45 and I believe that is the total number here in NYC not just at that high school. Another thing the media is not reporting is that a bunch of the kids from the High School went to Mexico for spring break.

Thank you DVC'ers everyone in this thread is so much more rational then in other areas of the board. After skimming 300+ posts I was almost ready to lock down my house.

We leave in 11 days and I don't want anything to even try to ruin this vacation for us.

I went to the dr. yesterday because of some upper resp. problems. When the doc first came in he asked why I was there I said I came before I get REALLY sick. He gave me a strange look and asked if I was fearful of the Swine Flu. I said, "Oh, no. Not at all. I'm eating more pork chops, bacon, hot dogs, bologna, and ham to build up my immunity." I thought his eyes were going to fall out of his head. I then said I'm just teasing and then told him that I knew I was sick but I could not afford to be off work since I had been off recently w/ my daughter having her tonsils out and then taking some time off at the end of May. He then treated me. At the end of the visit he finally let himself laugh and said for the regulars that have everything the media says they will catch if they see another human he will make sure he recommends my diet to ward off the Swine Flu. I then told him the pork producers will appreciate his advertisement of the other white meat. I told this to a friend of mine and she heard a caller call into some talk radio host on NPR asking if she would get the Swine Flu because she lived close to a Pig Farm.

Not WDW, but our DD and her fiance' had a honeymoon booked at Cabo San Lucas (through DVC II exchange) for July. My DH was concerned about them going to Mexico between the Swine Flu and the violence. They agreed and called MS to see if they could switch to another location. Thankfully for them, something was open in Maui, so we paid the fee to switch them over. Normally, my DH is not the overly cautious type, but we all feel better about the situation.

We are also booked for July at the Royal Sands in Cancun - we are really considering cancelling at this point.

I think we have til 5/17 to try to use our points elsewhere with II.

My sister also had a trip planned to Cancun this July and my oldest son was going with her and her family. She asked me what I thought whether they should go or not, I told her to wait a little longer and see how things pan out before cancelling since their trip isn't until July. While last night I spoke with her and they cancelled their trip. Now they are trying to figure out where to go and how to use the airline tickets, they have until May 12th to change the tickets without any fees attached, they can travel up to a year from the purchase date. I guess my son will lose his airline ticket since there's no where he needs to travel to in the next year, our trips are all planned and tickets purchased.
