Anybody else nervous about going to WDW with the Swine Flu scare?

I would certainly stay out of the Mexico pavillion at Epcot. Also, there are still people going to and from Mexico, even knowing where it came from. I don`t understand why they havent stopped travels to and from there before now.

Just had to chime in and say .

Our kids schools have shut down til May 11!!! I am trying to be good and not call DVC!! The district had 1 confirmed case and shut the entire district down. Not at either of my boys schools and we have not been exposed, but DMIL would stress out if I took the boys to WDW this week:rotfl:

It is soooooo tempting. I figure it is easier to sanitize a DVC Villa than my entire house!:scared1:

Oh great, now the state of FL wants to declare a state of emergency. Are they going to do this every year during flu season too.

WAKE UP PEOPLE!

The Health Emergency is not really a big deal. It just gives the state Surgeon General extra powers to deal with things she needs to work on. No practical effect on anything else at this point.

You are looking for N95 respirators (which is a classification, not a brand/model.) Those are the ones that have the right filtering to prevent transmission. The regular surgical masks don't really do much for you.

I heard that today. I was talking about surgical face masks. We did find hand sanitizer today, after going to several stores that had to restock. Walmart restocked and was sold out by 8 AM. I feel like I am getting ready for a Cat 5 Hurricane! We are still leaving Sunday for Disney. I am not crazy about all the lines and bathrooms, but I was relieved to hear that it's not as dangerous at this time as they once thought it was. That doesn't mean that it can't become to that strength. I had family members die in 1918, I just checked the dates of their deaths, 3 days apart in Nov 1918. This is the fear with this one, that it will be stronger this fall. Not trying to scare anyone, we all need to be careful and prepared.

It depends on who you are going to believe, the CDC or CNN and Fox News.

The CDC never said it was bad, they said we would like to get a handle on it. That was then interpreted by the 24 hour news channels that they where concerned, then worried, then our HAIR ON FIRE (all within about 2 cycles.) The whole time the CDC was saying, wash/sanitize your hands, and use some common sense; people who are already sick shouldn't expose others; and people who are immunosuppressed should take extra precautions.

It's like the press conference that went something like:
Q: Is this the result of terrorism?
A: There is no evidence of that.
Followup: Then it can't be ruled out.
A: It doesn't have any of the signs.

As for it strengthening, if it does it will be a different virus. Virus aren't like armies which can get fresh troops, rearm and resupply. They have to change to get stronger, which they do do. But it's highly unlikely it will be "the same" strain.

The problem is people don't seem to understand. At first you only see the most critical cases. If you get the flu is your first response to go to your doctor and get it cultured? Mine is to stay home for a day or so till I feel better, and make sure I get enough to fluid. So there is no way to count me, or the 1,000's of other who are doing the same thing.

That is another thing, this flu is VERY MILD, unless you are immunosupressed. It will feel slightly worst then a bad cold, but as long as you take care of yourself, there is nothing to really worry about.

If anything this flu is actually cycling itself into a weaker and weaker strain.

Flu infection rates vs "reports"

GA.

70 cases "reported" to the health dept and reported as "suspected" cases in GA by the media.

Testing completed on 50.

Confirmed 49 NOT the "Swine flu" 1 confirmed. 2% "accuracy" rate.

I audit controls for a living. The control here is "media hysteria" they have a 98% success rate in creating fear where it should not exist LOL!

Deaths from "Swine" flu in the US so far 1.

Deaths from "regular" flu in the US from January to April 36,000

Hysteria over Swine flu... OUT OF CONTROL

Hysteria over regular flu. What? You mean folks died?

Hmm.....

This is an EPIDEMIC of news hysteria....Would I go to Disney right now? Well let me think on it...HELL YES....would I be concerned bout the flu, yes, just like i'm concerned about other germs thats why we carry hand sanitizer and practise good hygene.
...the sky is falling the sky is falling....Shawnpirate:

I posted this earlier, but...

ALL OF YOU SHOULD STAY HOME NEXT WEEK!

I will go to Disney and make sure it's safe for you! I am willing to take the risk

(LOL!)

Hey.................that's what DD and I are going to do, too (it's always better to have more than one viewpoint, right?;)).:thumbsup2

I just think that everyone who is panicing about this should never leave there houses.

Approx 36000 people die each year, in the USA, from the regular Flu

Aprrox 43000 people die each year in car accidents in the USA alone.

The media, the government and above all The World Health Organization are doing their best to scare people to death. This is just plain silly in my opinion, you have a better chance of getting hit by a bus than you do of getting this swine flu.

This is the best advice anyone has given. ;)

We'll be poison-testing WDW from May 9-15, so stay away until we report back!

Not to quibble with you ... but...

If that number 36,000 is right. Then there is a serious flu outbreak, over the last few years that has been the annual number, 36,000. So that would mean all flu this year has been 3 times more deadly this year than in previous years. In fact even based on the range, the estimates top number is just under 60k, so that would make it record year.

I suspect you have some bad data. Flu and Flu related complications account for about 36,000 per year in the US. Or about 100 per day.

Which to look at it another way that ONE death that has been confirmed to due to 2009 H1N1 was reported 3 days ago ( so that means there are something like 299 people have died from the flu since that have gotten ZERO media.)

For the fact checkers out there I used this page from the CDC for my numbers.

I heard the exact same figures yesterday. 36,000 from Jan-Apr. I was shocked. I never even get the flu shot. I was thinking when I heard it, if I had known the flu was this serious, I sure would have taken the flu shot. I have been getting the updates on the CDC web site this week. I didn't even know anyone that got the flu this year. Last year was a different story. We leave in the morning, so I have to go and start getting ready.

We will be in Disney in September and when I first heard about the swine flu I was a little concerned. Then I heard that the medical community feels that with the warm weather coming, the outbreak should wind down only to resurface this fall. Then I was really freaked out! But now, it seems that it isn't as bad as they were saying and that most cases in the US are milder than regular flu. So I would go and enjoy...just use common sense and ALWAYS have a bottle of Purell in your purse. In general, Disney is the most germiest place on earth anyway, so there is a good chance you will contract some kind of bug while there (we always do!)

Actually, the most "germiest place on earth" is probably any elementary school classroom. Ask any teacher. ;)
