I really don't think I'll be able to get DH on the teacups with our kids. He has never been much of a rides person.

So does anyone have any survival tips for me? Is this like the spinning ride with the wheel in the middle that makes you spin faster? If I threaten my kids that we won't be able to ride anymore if Mom is falling down drunk, they won't spin me too much. Do they spin a bunch on their own? I rode these the spinning ride with the wheel in the middle two different visits last year at a nearby theme park and thought someone was going to have to help me off. The older lady operating the ride came over after the second visit to see if I was ok because she could tell I was turning green!

Yes it has the wheel in the middle that you turn and spin, but it's harder to turn that most I've ridden at other parks.

The kids can't spin it enough by themselves to make me dizzy, lol.

If your DH wants, he can just ride in a cup by himself, and not touch the middle part, and he'll have a fun ride watching the kids.

You could ride together too ~ and let the kids go at it in their own cups ... it's fun!

They don't spin much on their own at all. The wheel in the center controls the spin. Maybe an ice cream bribe to keep the kids from making it spin too much?

:thumbsup2 Great idea!!! I think I will be doing this. My kids can ride together and spin it as much as they want and I will ride with DBf

Good luck with that! I rode the tea cups for the first and last time at DLR when I was 9 years old. My Mom was wise enough to stay off, so it was just my dad and my sister and me. Even though they both know that I have thrown up in the car in more than 20 states, they still spun the cup as fast as they could. I was completely ill for the next several hours and have not gone anywhere near the tea cups for the last 30 years.

i have epilepsy and for some strange reason, spinning and getting dizzy always triggered the seizures. so when i was a kid i was TERRIFIED of the teacups.

for this coming trip, i want to do all the disney things i've never done before - SO great to know that the cups don't spin very much if you don't make them! my boyfriend got me on the primeval whirl coaster in AK last year and even though that spun a bit i was fine.

so hooray! teacups are in this may!
thanks everyone!

I am the type of person who gets motion sick very very easily, but I'm fine on the teacups. I take a dramamine every morning before I go to the parks, but sometimes it doesnt help , like with Mission space or expedition everest, but the teacups never bother me. I dont think they spin that much, and the ride is over pretty fast. Good luck!!

Ohh, I read so much about the Tea Cups before we went!

On my first round I was with my 6 year old son. He didn't have the strength to turn the wheel very much, so the only spinning was the "regular" spin that happens to all the tea cups. I left the ride, thinking "wow, that wasn't so bad! Another hyped up attraction on DIS." :lmao:

THEN I rode it with my 11 year daughter, who was quite capable of spinning that wheel and enjoyed it very much! My family also enjoyed my nearly passing out on a nearby low wall after I was able to climb out of the tea cup. :rotfl: I must have sat there for 10 mins and swore NEVER again!

DD LOVED the tea cups on our last trip! BUT...I held that wheel in the middle as hard as I could...prevented any type of spinning (besides what the ride does itself). Easy peasy!:upsidedow

I'm in the same boat. my wife won't ride but the kids want to. So have to.
Best way to ride and not get sick is to find one spot and focus on that.
Usually the center of the wheel works best for me. If you look up or around that's when it gets you.
Good luck.

I don't like spinny rides but I will ride the teacups with my girls. You control the speed of your spin and the girls know not to twirl Mom too much:sick: Like the PP said, just find a spot and focus on it - I use the wheel, too.

My son (who has sensory issues in addition to other medical issues) loves the Tea Cups ALOT. He loves the spinning motion so much that he laughs until he can't sit up!!! He enjoyed it so much last year that the wonderful CM let us stay on for 3 rides - spinning as fast as we could get the silly thing to turn. Thinking about it now, just makes me nauseus but at the time it was lots of fun!!

I get way dizzy on these rides but I ride them anyway.. lol. What helps me is to find something in the car like the seat or your shoe and focus on it. Or close your eyes. It doesn't keep the dizzy away 100% but it does make it bearable.

Here's my story....
I suffer from motion sickness and take Bonine every AM when visiting WDW.

I was terrified to ride this, but was feeling pretty good that day. DH decided to help the kids spin the wheel. After "the look", he stopped and asked the kids to leave the wheel alone too. I spent the rest of the ride clutching the wheel, trying to keep it from spinning at all. It also helped that I had something to focus on as well.

So for the record, you can hold the wheel and try to prevent it from spinning more. :rotfl:

Teacups was my daughter's first ride ever at Disney. She was four (she's a whopping five now) and the trip was a surprise to her. One of my most wonderful memories is of her, eyes agog, cackling wildly yelling "Faster, Dad!." Rarely has she been more beautiful than at that moment.

I haven't been on this ride since I was a kid -- I get motion sickness (but can ride coasters w/ no problems). I'm thinking about doing it with the kids next time.

Two questions:

1. How old do the kids have to be to ride alone? Can an older child accompany a younger child?

2. If I do wind up riding, does the motion of the tea cups themselves (not the spinning of the individual tea cup) make anyone else sick?

It looks like this thread is helping others who have questions about the teacups, too. That's what I love about the disboards.

I would like to know the answer to the kids' age question, too. I don't think I would be sick if the individual teacup doesn't spin much. Believe me, I will have a death grip on that wheel.

Thanks to everyone who has posted or will post. My dd9 has the flu & has been very interested in all the responses.

Hi neighbor! (I have family in Nashville, but reside just outside of Knoxville.)

1. I'm not 100% on kids riding alone. Last year, I did see adult-less teacups, but the kids in them were roughly 8+ years in age (no little tikes, and maybe older, I'm bad with guessing ages). Perhaps someone can come along and give a definite answer.

2. Once I got the death grip - the damage had been done, but I survived and was well within a few minutes of sitting in the shade with a bottle of water. However, if I had started with the death grip, I'd have been fine (and this is what I'll do if I'm tasked with riding again this May).

You said you can ride coasters just fine ... I can't ride coasters without the assistance of Bonine. But with Bonine, I can ride anything, if I'm cautious.

But each person and family is different ... As a young adult, I used to be the one to see if I could get "lift off" by spinning as fast as I could. Now just watching them makes my tummy flip. :rotfl:
