I know this is a hot button topic, but, I was just browsing jobs at WDW and was shocked to see the mousekeepers only start at $8.50 an hour!!! That means those wages are only about $3 more an hour then they were when I first started as a housekeeper back in 1989. :( That is very sad. So, I will continue to tip, and may add a bit to what I usually leave now. :)

You do understand that that is the starting rate??? Not all that many housekeepers are making that little. The vast majority are making over $10 an hour. Not saying that that is a huge amount either, but it's close to what my dd made in a preschool/childcare center!!!
I figure that if a housekeeper has 15 rooms to service each day, and they are left $5 per room, that's an addtl $75 a day!! Times 5??? $375 a week in tips. That's $18,000 yearly in tips..not counting actual pay!! I have a hard time feeling badly for someone making that....especially when there is no education needed and you don't even need to speak English.
I do tip, on occasion. But it's not a sure thing with me. I tip, daily, if I have had really good service, if my housekeeper has been welcoming and made me feel welcomed. A nice cheery 'hello' or 'good morning' is nice.
I fully realize that others (most) will disagree with me, but that's okay. There is a reason that Disney doesn't consider housekeeping to be a tipped position.

First you say they make too much because of tips, then next sentence says that's why you don't tip. If everybody felt that way, most of the housekeepers would remain at poverty wages for their families. A lot of people think the work they do is extremely hard and is a thankless position. I'm happy to spread my very good fortune around. We left $5 per day as a tip.

Wish I had $18,000 in untaxed income a year!

And this surprised/shocked you why??? This is a position that requires no previous skills and very little training. Anything above minimum wage is a bonus IMO. They have chosen the job, and its pay scale- no one forces them to take it. Tip as you see fit- we do when the housekeeping is good and we don't when it is lacking. :confused3

I used to usually not tip housekeeping services in hotels but, recently, moved to an area of the country where many people choose not to work (we have a lot of social security disability fraud in our area). This has made me more inclined to tip (and do so generously if the service is exceptional).

Tipping is a personal decision. Tip if you feel it's warranted, don't if you don't. There's very little point in beating this particular dead horse (again).
