Does anyone have more than avg. knowledge about this scenario?
At 10 a.m. they are going to put him under for an ERCP to check for stones in his ducts, then they are going to wake him up completely and have him wait until 2:45 when they will put him back under and remove his gallbladder.
We were under the impression that the whole point of having both procedures done on the same day was to get it all done at once and only have to go under once. We only found all of this out tonight when they called to tell us what time to be there tomorrow. This is making us both a little nervous, to say the least.
Is it safe to go back under only a few hours after coming out of anesthesia??:worried: The last time he had surgery (hernia), he had trouble waking up from it.
Thanks for the help.
Denise

Maybe with the first procedure they aren't putting him completely under, maybe an IV sedation type of thing.

Don't know anything about anesthesia, except that I woke up a couple of time befor they were through with the procedure.
just wanted to give you and your DH some   for tomorrow.

No help on your question here, Denise, but wishing your hubby a good day in the OR. I know he will do fine. My prayers are with you both.

ERCP's are done under conscious sedation. Very different than general Anesthesia!! Its basically a tranquilizer(Versed) through the IV(very simplified explanation). The anesthesia for the cholecystectomy is general anesthesia. He shouldn't have any problem with both procedures being done on the same day. Its done all the time!! He should tell the anesthesiologist that he's had trouble waking up in previous surgeries, they have alot of different ways of doing anesthesia and will pick the one thats best for him!!

Relax, he'll be fine.

Yep, what Isyorke said.

The IV sedation will put him in a foggy state and take away the memory of having the proceedure. He will probably be pretty sleepy for several hours though, my DH is after he has his pain management proceedures.

They often use Versed during a General Anesthetic also, they use many drugs, sometimes more than a dozen, so it won't present a problem as the Anesthesia team will have all the records and be very aware of what he has had.

Best wishes to you both.
