An Invasion of a "STRANGER" Kind.... NEW THREAD IS UP!! Go Thee NOW!

There's a technique to do it though, otherwise the stalk will just break off. I place the asparagus on a cutting board with the tender yummy part pointing left and the stalk-ending pointing right. I place my left hand on tender yummy part to hold the asparagus down (or I guess I should say "still", it's not like it's going to run around, like it should be sedated for this or something), put the peeler about halfway on the stalk and peel right, to the end of the stalk. Then I roll it with my left hand, peeling as it rolls.

What an informative thread you have going here. Where else can you get this kind of content?:rotfl2:

Thanks for the tip! I love asparagus but I usually end up cutting so much of the stalk off. I'll have to try this.

Hey all!!

I just spent the last 3! hours cataloguing our books, and am still only 1/2 done!!! It's a huge job- one I"m not looking forward to finishing.

But, alas, I'm needing to be a stick in the mud, and hit the sack myself.

I'll catch you all in the morning!

Nite.

For those of you who've figured out my routine, I'm usually ON around 9 PM Central Time. Replies coming then.

As we eat mainly white asparagus in Germany, and the white one you must peel, we have special asparagus peelers - don't you have them in the US? :confused3 And you are supposed to peel them lying on your arm... the asparagus, not yourself... Flossbolna did it yesterday, when we had 1.5 kilogram of asparagus for dinner :woohoo:

I had never heard of a special asparagus peeler, but I just Google'd it and I see they have an arm to hold the asparagus while you peel it. Interesting! Is that the arm you're talking about lying on? If not, I'm having trouble picturing it!

1.5 kilograms sounds like a lot, but it's good stuff. I need to try the white sometime. Do you like it better than the green?

Thanks for the tip! I love asparagus but I usually end up cutting so much of the stalk off. I'll have to try this.

That about exhausts my cooking tips!

6:00- Dinner at JIKO The Cooking Place. Ummm... Just wondering...do they do anything else there??

I think I've mentioned this here before, but I  Jiko, especially the filet. For any meat-lovers out there, this is a must eat! Last time I was at Jiko, I did notice they have a bar too, so it could be Jiko - the cooking AND DRINKING place

I've never been to Jiko. We're planning on Boma next trip, but I wonder if Jiko would be better? Hmmmmmm.....

For more unsolicited advice, we ate at both on our last trip, and I enjoyed Jiko 1000 times more, see message above on the filet  That said, I am not really a buffet person. While I love to try little bits of lots of new things, I prefer quality over quantity when it comes to food. The quality of the food at Boma was good compared to some other buffets, but I am picky when it comes to meat and found it difficult to find non-fatty meat, so I wasn't completely satisfied when the meal was over.

You get along with Spanish like I got along with Chem. Dropped that one like a hot potato, and out the window went my medical career.

Me too :sad2:. Luckily, I found a nice, smart, handsome senior boy that happily did my chem homework for me every day during study hall (he was planning to be a doctor!), but that was definitely the end of any thoughts of a medical career.

Oh, and on the asparagus...a few years ago I got the idea to use a peeler to peel the hard thick skin towards the bottom of the stalk so as not to waste so much of the asparagus because it was too "tough". Judy thought I was nuts until she saw somebody on the Food Network doing it....now she does it too. <taking bow> Thank you.

Oooh, thanks for the tip! :thumbsup2 I love asparagus and hate having to throw out the bottom but can't deal with the texture.

I've actually never had white asparagus....and I just can't picture the way you are peeling them. I have never seen an asparagus peeler, but I'm sure we have them at kitchen supply stores. I think I'll go ask my friend google what they look like...

It's a pity Flossbolna is not online - she's more into asparagus than I am, so I guess she could tell you a lot more of demanded and undemanded facts about aspargus. :rolleyes1

And I'm sorry, I confused you.... yes the asparagus peeler has kind of an arm, but if you don't have one of these special peelers, you rest it on your arm, while peeling. Maybe this picture will explain it better than me with my unsufficient English:
how to hold the asparagus

1.5 kilograms is a lot, but usually one counts 0.5 kilogram per person and then it comes with potatoes etc. We had potatoes as well, but only some :)

In Germany the white one is the most common one. I didn't like it as a child, but I guess that was because we didn't have fresh one and it was bitter. But just south of Berlin is a huge area where they grow asparagus, so they sell really fresh one here, gathered in the early morning of the same day. I would recommend to try the white one only if you can get really fresh asparagus of the best quality.

I peel it just with a normal potato peeler and that works fine as well. But some of my friends just love their asparagus peeler. It's only important that you peel away from the top! And here are some pictures of how the asparagus peeler works

All caught up on the plans AND got some handy kitchen tips to boot. WOOHOO! When I grill asparagas, I brush it with Olive oil, add some Kosher salt and fresh ground black pepper, then slap it on a veggie insert on the gas grill. As to your plans, it sounds like you have everything well thought out. Awesome Job! :thumbsup2

Katharina, thanks for including so many pictures for us! Okay, I see they rest it on their wrist and hand. I would have never thought to do it that way. (I still like my way though.)

I saw the white ones on a Travel Channel show, I think Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations" when he was in Germany. People were eating lots of them, like you describe.

I agree 100% -- you have to peel away from the top, towards the end.

Liesa, what's on the docket for tomorrow? Eggplant? Edamame?

You are all over it GB!

There's a technique to do it though,

There's a technique to most everything in life from planning a Disney vacation to peeling your asparagus- you to think you heard it right here!! ;)

I love making rope drop just to be in the parks early but I agree the other shows are ok but not magical like the MK one. So gald to hear you think you will make one! :thumbsup2

BTW - I think I will bring Tate's AK outfit to DC if that is okay by you instead of shipping it to Blankistan.

I'm sure I"ll make at least one! :goodvibes The others are lame.

YES!!! Perfect idea! Then I won't have to worry about how to fit it into our 6 little boxes!

Flossbolna just left for the train station so I step in... I don't know yet, how it will work out after the summer. But as our parents moved to Nuremberg last summer, I guess I'll travel more often south than Flossbolna north... But we already have a date fixed for her first visit after moving back :goodvibes

That makes sense. Your German train system seems like it makes travel so easy and quick! Or would you mostly fly? Assuming there's no ash to deal with. :rotfl:

Hi Liesa - I was up so late the night before on here that I crashed early as well last night!

Can you believe - I have never been to a rope drop!! Not a morning person - but I guess I will have to put it on my to do list.

I had to go to bed early last night so we keep missing each other. I had a really long day of channeling my inner librarian, meeting with our local partners for a ministry update, and getting my househelper off to the market. (Meal Planning is pretty tough here with limited groceries- being creative with waht I've got is one of those challenges.)

That about exhausts my cooking tips!

don't be so modest! I'll bet you have lots of other fun stuff you've learned through "the company". Besides you watch the shows- you've admitted it right here.

I think I've mentioned this here before, but I  Jiko, especially the filet. For any meat-lovers out there, this is a must eat! Last time I was at Jiko, I did notice they have a bar too, so it could be Jiko - the cooking AND DRINKING place

:lmao::lmao: Good one! I hope I don't have to come home and write up a really snarky review because it's become JIKO, the Bad Service Place.

I don't love meat, I like it, but if there's seafood or an excellent sounding veggie entree, I'd choose it first.

For more unsolicited advice, we ate at both on our last trip, and I enjoyed Jiko 1000 times more, see message above on the filet  That said, I am not really a buffet person. I'm excited to try both, mainly because both of them get me to the AKL/V area!!! I can't wait to see them! With Sanaa in the mix, I'm sure I'll get my fill!

I had a dream last night that I actually got one of those Tangierine Dreams like KathyRN got, and it was soooooooo good!!

I"m like you, I like a lot of a little, but when I have to get a lot, I want it to be quality, and well prepared!

Me too :sad2:. Luckily, I found a nice, smart, handsome senior boy that happily did my chem homework for me every day during study hall (he was planning to be a doctor!), but that was definitely the end of any thoughts of a medical career.

Hopefully, in the last 25 years, I've matured a bit and my higher thinking skills have developed. I'm going to go back to school when I get back at some point, and shoot for nursing. THis time, when the mole and Avagadro's number comes a knocking at my intellectual door, I'll have the sense to get myself to a tutoring center. ;)

It's a pity Flossbolna is not online - she's more into asparagus than I am, so I guess she could tell you a lot more of demanded and undemanded facts about aspargus. :rolleyes1

1.5 kilograms is a lot, but usually one counts 0.5 kilogram per person and then it comes with potatoes etc. We had potatoes as well, but only some :)

I hope she's having a super great trip, too!

I also hope you had about 4 liters of Lemony Hollandaise sauce to smother everything in. Potatoes. Need. Sauce. ;):lmao:

Hi Liesa, I see your green light's on! :)
I'm up, I'm up!!! got my coffee in hand, and am ready to roll!!

I guess now is as good a time as any to get my guesses in. I know there are a few answers I should know but I might guess wrong. :badpc::badpc:

Maroo just skyped me all frantic like!!!! Could it possibly be true???????

I'm about peeing my britches, you know!!!

I read about it earlier today. I tried to follow what was going on but I was away from the computer for most of the day. Mel was in bed at 10.. I've had some time to catch up on my threads. I hope Disney come through for you ladies!

Only around here do planning which order to ride the coaster AND peeling asparagus go hand in hand. :lmao:

It's been a long time in the making- I'm starting to understand how an elephant feels when she's pregnant. Although, I don't exactly look like one, my neighbor DID call me fat yesterday.... :headache:

Liesa, what's on the docket for tomorrow? Eggplant? Edamame?

You are all over it GB!

OK, between your thread with strudel (no 2nd e- eh, hem) and mine with asparagus... we could open up the DISFood Network. :lmao: :rotfl:

If we're not careful, they'll move us over to the Food Board. :upsidedow

Was this on the hours page at Disney?? Where'd ya go to find the DIScussion??

Check this out-
Mel just bought tickets tonight to fly to Florida in 4 weeks. It is her godsons birthday and she is taking Juliana with her for the weekend. I only have 1 job that weekend but I can't get out of it.

I'm not sure I could be that close to Disney and not step foot in a park.... especially considering I have an AP that I won't be using again. :sad1: Maybe they will hit DTD or something like that. :confused3
