Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

:sad1: I am sorely missing my beloved Raptors. Hurry back, basketball season! Today is apparently the NBA draft. I wish I understood what it all meant so maybe I could get a little fix that way. :cheer2:

It means that all teams will be picking new players for their teams. There are kids (young men) who have reached the age where they are able to play in the league. The players have been ranked on so many skills and categorized by who is the most skilled. There has been a lottery to decide in what order teams get to choose. That’s based somewhat on how teams fared last season, as well as some luck.

There are players who won’t get picked in the draft, but could still get signed in the coming months based on what teams feel they still need.

And the NY Knicks will disappoint again like they have for years. :sad1:

:goodvibes I do get the concept of sports drafts themselves. What I'm not right up on is the way the draft picks are earned by/assigned to the different teams and the strategy of what team wants who. As for being undrafted - it's inconsequential! My sweet baboo Fred Van Vleet was undrafted. :cheer2:

NBA draft only has 2 rounds, so 60 picks. Many players are undrafted.

Every team gets 2 picks? And sometimes they give them away to other teams (or get them) with trade deals?
One pick per round. It's the same for all college drafts. If a team thinks they can trade their pick for money or current players instead of trying their luck on a college prospect, they can opt to trade to a willing fellow team.

I thought of this thread tonight. I was innocently looking for something about my parents, who are no longer alive but were married almost sixty years.

They met as teenagers at Salada tea in downtown Toronto. And it just happened to be just around the corner from me, at King & Spadina, for those who know the city. So I used to walk by it all the time, weirdly enough - and took my mom in her last years.

So what the heck does that have to do with this thread?😁

Well while I was looking something up about the architect I came across this -

It does not say it is American in so many words, but quite the slant that way. So I go in my head "Oh I really thought it was started by a Canadian, I must be mistaken". And left it.

But it was a Canadian as far I can see, so it reminded me of "Buzz that is not an American invention" on this thread. And beyond Buzz how easily words can lead in an entirely different direction..🧐

Annette,

Many scenarios go on. With who one drafts - there could be an outstanding point guard left at your draft number but your team needs a big man badly (or many other scenarios). So a team might pass up a crazy good pick to get their needs met.

Or might pick to trade.

As far as trades, they can be twofold.

A trade can already be in the books sort of speak on draft night. Say a team.made a trade at some other point in time & to close the deal they agreed to give up first or second round future
draft picks. Then on draft night it is ________ pick but they have given their position/draft pick to ________. Blanks are for team names.
That is a previous trade on the books.

And then sometimes right on draft night teams have made agreements a la "I will pick for you Toronto at our #4 spot" so you don't lost the player and you will do this for us blah blah blah.

Or after a pick there sometimes are negotiations right in the moment between the teams (But majority are already in motion).

Teams are wheeling and dealing at all times behind the scenes.

That is when you hear "We have a trade!". 😁🤭

I loved when David Stern was alive and used to say that with a total glint in his eye. Adam Silver does not have the same personality with it all.

@lisaviolet , that is very misleading indeed.

Did you guys get any weather/smog/smoke ⚠️? Ugh, nice long weekend Here, and it looks like we will have smoke tomorrow, we just got warned to wear N95‘S if we “must” be outside tomorrow. A little more warning than the last time, so the winds must have shifted.

Ha! Is it still there? I lived at Spadina and Front (so like a block away) but don't remember ever seeing a store by that name.

No long gone as it was the actual factory, not a store.
Two pubs were in the building SirDuff. Firkin was the main one, but I believe it is gone. At the turn off for SPIN. South side of King, west of Spadina, just before Brant.

I knew you & I lived in the same neighbourhood. And thought it was funny that we could have easily been passing each other.

Hi Annette @ronandannette, hope you're doing well. Must have been blast from the past day as I was looking up Salada tea & Gumby, in no particular order. Laughing..

Someone gave me a tiny figurine for my birthday & I realized yesterday that it reminded me of the Salada tea ones. That started the deep dive!

So sorry to hear mommasita.

We have been pretty good, fortunately.

Happy Saint-Jean-Baptiste weekend. Did you do anything festive yesterday? Or plans for the rest of the weekend.

that’s good.
Thank you. We had friends over last night for supper and a few drinks, it rained , so blah
Today is a wash out. My husband was off Friday, I’m off tomorrow, and it looks like another wash out 🤪
We don’t celebrate it, you know. 😉 All fireworks were supposed to be cancelled due to the fires, but you could hear some somewhere last night.

Well sorry for the wash out. But I have a special name for meteorologists, that will get bleeped out here - I have to look at hourly forecasts a lot, due to biking .
So may they make one of their 'too often' erroneous calls & it holds off somewhat for you mommasita.

Canadians, is there a place in Canada that Americans should avoid to visit due to anti American bias? I always think of Canada as a welcoming place overall but I wonder if there are places you would recommend to avoid.
