Americans and Canadians culture Q&A Thread.

Just curious, and I'm sure Canadians will tell me no but has Canadian news/media mentioned the CSA (Canadian Soccer Association) at all lately? This has been an interesting week for your national team, so it would surprise me if it was not on the news/sports radio at all.
I don’t know, that is the honest truth.
It’s been our first Summer long weekend in Quebec, and the wildfires , the air quality, has been the top news. For obvious and more important reasons. We are getting alerts on our phones.
I don’t watch much news at all, it’s never good, and I’ve had enough bad to last a lifetime .

Here's something I'll never understand, about the southern vernacular. How can anybody, with a straight face, refer to a single person as "y'all"? And more than one person is "all y'all"? It's just so stupid...:confused3
Is y'all not a thing in Canada?

I completely understand. I just thought Canadian news would cover it as a interesting distraction. Praying that the wildfires end asap @mommasita . I hope the extra firefighters that the USA sent you guys are making a difference.

No, not unless somebody is specifically trying to parody an American.

I just absolutely loathe the reply “uh huh” to thank you. Your welcome is just as easy to say, and much more polite. It grinds my gears.

Yes! I attended post grad school in Buffalo NY, got so many uh huh’s when I said thank you for the door being held open. I just assume now that if I get an uh huh to a thank you, that it’s an American.

And y’all or all y’all I will use in a joking around manner. Definitely not part of my vernacular. But then I have family members who use you’s or you’s guys and I cringe so bad at that one!

I would guess that might be a distinction in western NY, which is culturally different to other parts of NY, like the Hudson Valley.

Only thing I've read recently is that the national teams need money and Canada Soccer is considering bankruptcy.

Yes.. it’s been covered on tv news and social media sports accounts. more coverage of the Toronto FC coaching changes over the last few days though - local news covering that as it is more relatable in this market. 🤷🏻‍♀️

We (in the North) say "uh huh" mostly as slang for understood, like Spanish speakers say claro.
Yes that is how most use it Buzz. The 'uh huh' used instead of You're welcome is regional. It is common in the Carolinas.

Speaking of the north - Pennsylvania's common reply, specifically NE Pennsylvania, is 'mmm hmm' as a reply to thank you.

The word, as far as pronunciation, that gets me the most is 'important'.

Why would they? Those seem like rather random dots to try and connect.
Y'all is used mostly in farming communities in the Midwest/South USA. We have cowboys/cowgirls in the USA and I thought Canada did too. Since our culture has rubbed into yours through media, I was curious if that has caught on in your communities as well. :confused3

@Buzz Rules , have you ever visited Canada? apologies if I have asked this before. It’s sometimes the questions make me wonder.
Not as an adult. My parents took me to Niagara Falls as a baby, but in person that would be it. I had Canadian classmates in college, so some of my questions come from what they told me and me questioning how accurate that information is. They often said that most Canadians make fun of Americans, think we're loud, arrogant, not bright, and too patriotic. I often felt sad that we are seemingly prejudged more than any other country in the world. I partly started this thread to show how our culture may help explain the perception but also to show how wrong that perception can be. I once asked one of those classmates why then did they choose to study here. They said because the colleges are better and have a higher respectability then Canadian universities. I replied "but how could that be true if the American public is perceived as less intelligent?". They gave me a smile and said "well, some of your people must be intelligent to create the world's largest economy and some of the greatest inventions of the modern era". It felt like a complement and an insult at the same time. 99% of Americans love your country as much as our own but sometimes I wonder how much that feeling is reciprocal above the 49th parallel. I know my love for Canada has evolved further through this thread and I have learned more as well. I wonder how many Canadian Disboarders can say the same about their feelings about the USA because of this thread? Sorry for the long response. My family has been in the USA since the 1600's (longer if I count my Native American ancestor"s lineage), so my love for my country partly comes from my family history that is often intertwined with important events that has happened within US history.
