It's really not that new at all.

Elvis and James Brown were WELL known for their entertainment quality. Anyone who ever saw Earth Wind and Fire perform would see theatrics like you wouldn't believe. Freddie Mercury put on a show that can blow your mind and good Lord, PRINCE? I just went as far as the 80s!

I personally ONLY go to a show where I'll be entertained. I love a performer, not just a singer.

Oh I know it isn't new at all. It just hasn't been popular for a long while but is coming back into vogue again. Even Elton John loved to put on a show!!!

Not sure of the conflict here. People on Broadway are amazing. Why do being on Broadway and making records need to be mutually exclusive? What seems to be happening on the music front is that artists are becoming more creative performers and their concerts are becoming more theatrical. I can see Adam fitting into this new wave very well. Lady Gaga is HUGE right now. It is a new trend that seems to be building up steam very quickly.

Like I said just my opinion. I don't like him but I can see him performing in musical theater but not doing all that great with recording and main stream radio. I may be wrong , sure wouldn't be the first time.

I'll be he first to admit that I can be very old fashioned in my musical likes. I do not like metal/hair bands, I did not like groups like The Stones, The Who or Aerosmith back when all my friends did and they all thought I was totally nuts. I do not like alternative music and while I like good old rock, southern rock and stuff like that I don't like when they get all high pitched and screechy in a song. I also prefer to just see someone stand and sing and not run all over the stage with frenetic energy. Maybe I am just weird but that is who I am music wise.

Which is precisely why AI has such a variety of types. Sometimes the favorite is NOT your type and it can make the year ABOMINABLE for you. My year was Carries... If I saw that wooden slap her thigh move ONE MORE TIME

I couldn't stand the year Taylor Hicks won over Chris Daughtry. Ugh. It was painful. I loved the year Carrie won though. I think she has a beautiful voice and is one of the most talented contestants.

I'm liking this year, as long as Adam goes all of the way.

I'm sure Adam is getting as tired of hearing this as his fans are. As damo pointed out, the two things are not mutually exclusive. I posted a link to Adam's last confessional because he is extremely clear as to the artistic direction he wants to take and what kind of album he'll make. I'm not sure the same thing can be said of the other contestants.
For those who didn't hear the confessional he says that he loves the great music from the 60s and 70s (his Dad was a DJ and he grew up listening to that music). He wants to do a theatrical type show -though not with "Broadway melodies". He pointed out that female stars are doing this ie. Lady GaGa, Brittney, Maddona etc. but no guys are. He wants to be the guy and I think he'll be brilliant at it. Other singers can stand there and put on a great show - I'm not taking anything away from them - but Adam will be the whole package. Unlike Madonna and Brittney, he can actually sing and not have to rely on lip-synching. I plan to be first in line to buy tickets to see him.

and I truely don't get the hoopla over Danny. I think without his back story he wouldn't have made it this far and I really don't get why the judges are so fond of him.

Not just Danny. A group of us watching the show last week were convinced the judges must have been critiquing a different performance to what we were hearing. None of us could understand the lavish praise heaped on Danny and Matt because the vocals were poor and the performance boring.

My worst season had to be Fantasia because I was a Jennifer Hudson fan (and proven right in the long run), and was completely baffled by the judges fawning over Fantasia. Her pronunciation was hilarious -I still laugh about her "Shummer Time" lyrics - and she sounded like Mickey Mouse on helium. Carrie was robotic but I think the show may be to blame for that. The performers must be very self-conscious knowing their life in the show depends upon what the judges will say and what the voters will do. Once the pressure is on and they can be themselves, I think they do a lot better.

Taylor was a complete waste of the season and proves what many musicians think - the audience is NOT always right.

I am actually liking this year because once Lil goes I am fine with who is left. While Adam is not to my taste I do agree that he has talent so I can appreciate what he does (I just don't like it). Right now I waver between Danny and Kris for my top 2.

I was the same way. I watched the Fantasia season and decided not to watch the next. I gave it a try again the Taylor year and regretted it. So I was so happy last year when I had David Cook to root for and this year I have Adam.

Wow, I liked Kelly, Ruben, Fantasia, Taylor, Jordin AND David! I also liked LaToya, Melinda, Clay, Bo, Elliott and of course, Michael Johns!! I love this show and watch it strictly to be entertained. I'm not into the tour, don't usually support them afterwards or really care what happens afterwards, like the winners of any other reality show. It's my thing for the moment and that's it.

I've been holding on to this secret non realistic hope that for the top 5 (since they each do 2 songs that week) Billy Joel and Elton John were the mentors. Never gonna happen, but a girl can hope, right?

I was the same way. I watched the Fantasia season and decided not to watch the next. I gave it a try again the Taylor year and regretted it. So I was so happy last year when I had David Cook to root for and this year I have Adam.

Those seasons were such messes! The only one I really liked in any of those seasons was Bo. And Constantine cracks me up! I saw him in Rock of Ages and he was AWESOME! I'm just glad I stuck around because I LOVED last season (probably the best group of people, talent and likability-wise) and this ones been fun too

I really liked Carrie , but for me, the way she tapped the microphone with the hand that held it drove me nuts-and she still does it.

Yeah Hicks should not have won at all and that is evidenced by the fact that Chris Daughtry is now a radio staple and Taylor Hicks is playing teen angel in the touring production of Grease. They are not quite on the same level and that just shows how off the voting can be sometimes.
