One thing to keep in mind in re the homecomings, at least for Danny's is that the events were tied to pre-existing popular events, such as Summerfest ticket opening and a Brewers game f or which tickets were sold months ago. I knew a bunch of people who went to that game and had no idea (and no interest) that an Idol was singing at the event. It's disingenuous to say that tens of thousands of people turned out at those events solely in order to see Danny.
In re the show being fixed, I have to admit that I thought that the year Rueben won. It just seemed incomprehensible to me that Clay did not win. Then I reminded myself that I've seen tons of political elections which seem to have inexplicable results, so perhaps it is actually totally reasonable to have a surprising result. I also remember thinking that the judges didn't know what they were talking about when they kept saying Clay wouldn't sell records.
I do think if the show were fixed, that Taylor Hicks would not have won, Melinda Doolittle would have gone on farther (Simon was pimping her big time too), Daughtry would not have gone home when he did and so on.
