Last years AI was a mixed bag of talent with a threesome (Carrie, Bo, Vonzell) that bordered on professional grade talent. This year there seems to be no doubt on which five are not only hinting theyre on the professional level, theyre already there. Heres my take on the electrifying (and not so) eleven.
Mandisa: Singing a song I had never heard before, I Dont Hurt Anymore, she had me hook, line and sinker up until the very end when she got a bit screamy. Still, ANOTHER solid performance. Her average, with my scoring method, is a 9 and thats consistency week after week.
Mandisa gets a 9 again this week.
Bucky: He attempted to sing Oh Boy by Buddy Holly. He didnt succeed. While it was an on key presentation, it was just weak as was his interpretation and stage presence. Sorry Bucky but I think its time you go.
He gets a 6.
Paris: She gave us Fever and Im thinking what could this teen know about a campy, hot love song? Apparently quite a bit. She took it and made it her own in every way. Looking delicious in that screaming yellow dress, pulling the audience in with every note, this girl is just a constant string of surprises.
Paris gets one of two unexpected 10s of this week.
Chris: A wicked cool adaptation of what could have been a pretty boring song. Chris warped Walk the Line into something I actually liked better than the original. He lost me at the end when he tried to rock it out. I found that to be a bit overboard. I like Chris but will continue to say he needs mega work on his stage presence. Again this week he looked upset while hes singing. Still, he gets props for a great arrangement of this classic song.
Chris gets an 8.
Katharine: I know this is a singing competition but
. If youre going open your mouth and insert your foot on live TV you will get criticized. I found her pre performance interview to be witchy with a B. The song Come Rain or Come Shine was pitchy, a shock coming from the contestant with possibly the best control. Her presence on stage last night was forced. She was acting a part and it just wasnt working for me.
I could go on about her just not connecting with the audience in this house but lets let it drop. I gave her a 6 and most of that was for finally picking a fairly good looking outfit.
Taylor: Taylor is one I wish would be more consistent. A five note song is not the way to showcase his great voice. Still (and yeah Simon, youre right, its not a dancing contest) he was so much fun to watch. We were cracking up laughing here.
He gets an 8 but it could have been much higher with a better choice of songs.
Lisa: She did Why Do Fools Fall in Love. Another poor song choice from Lisa. Most of the song seemed to be too low for her range and, like Katharine, her performance seems forced and unnatural. Lisa is on my list of those who may have their ticket home this week.
I gave her a 4.
Kevin: Kevin has been pretty much zapped by some good coaching. Hes still got a way to go but his presentation of When I Fall In Love had me melting. A perfect choice for him, this was most likely his best performance to date.
Hell probably get yanked off the VFTW website after last night and thats a good thing. I gave him an 8.
Elliott: Oh dear. Out of tune, no rhythm, I felt like I was in another dimension as I heard the judges raving about his performance. I thought it was horrific. He attempted to sing Teach Me Tonight. I wish I could say Id never heard it before but I grew up listening to that song. He butchered it.
Everyone seems to have at least one bad week and Elliott, youve used yours up. He gets the lowest score of the night with a 3.
Kellie: Will the real Kellie please stand up! If last night was the real you, Im a fan all the way. Absolutely nailing Walking After Midnight, her version was both sexy and fun. She just completely controlled the stage.
Capturing the other 10 of the night, there is more to Kellie than her lack of knowledge about calamari.
Ace A weak start to In the Still of the Night finally gave way to some pleasant melody by the middle. He just isnt doing it for me and I found my mind wandering to housework chores I have to do tomorrow. I keep hoping for a repeat of Father Figure but it hasnt happened again and by this point in the competition, Im thinking it probably wont.
Ace gets a 7 for an OK but not inspiring performance.
Who I voted for from the most on down.
Paris
Kellie
Mandisa
Taylor
Kevin
Who I think may go home this week:
Bucky
Lisa
As always
JMHO!
ETA: Just got thru reading all the comments from last night. Add me to the list of those who didn't realize that Chris' version of Walk the Line WASN'T his version after all. Disappointing to say the least.
