American Idol: Season 10 PART III

I listened to this really and truly hoping it would change my mind about her singing. Sorry, but I could barely hang in there for the whole song. I don't mean that in a catty way either. It's just my opinion. I don't care for the other finalists either, but they do have better voices than Haley.

Wish I had someone to root for in the final three, but I don't, so I'm giving it up this season, as I said before. :sad1:

Oh, no, I certainly don't think it's catty to not like someone's voice. We all have our opinions on what we like!

Coming from someone who likes Haley, I've got to say that there's always a contestant every year who people think have made it too far in the competition and who causes much division in the public.

Just looking over wikipedia (and a nice little retrospective for those who have followed Idol for ten years):

Season One: Nikki McKibben found herself in the Bottom Two or Three five out of the six weeks of the contest, but made it all the way to third place.

Season Two: Carmen Rasmussen (she of the warbly voice that I actually didn't mind) sneaks her way to Top Six.

Season Three: Fantasia winning was a shock to some, but the real surprise was Jasmine Trias making the Top Three.

Season Four: Scott Savol makes the Top Five despite (or perhaps because of) some assault charges that came to light during the season.

Season Five: The Daughtry elimination was certainly shocking, but I actually think this season progressed in a way that didn't lead to too many accusations of "undeserved" to be bandied about (although I imagine some would say Taylor Hicks didn't deserve the win).

Season Six: Sanjaya

Season Seven: Perhaps Syesha Mercado who made it to Top Three over Jason Castro, Brooke White, and Carly Smithson

Season Eight: Danny Gokey and the story of his dead wife landed him a third place finish

Season Nine: Did anyone deserve to win Season Nine? Man, you look back at that one and wonder why you even watched.

Season Ten: Haley's the go-to person to be "ridiculed" for making it too far according to some.

The point is that there is ALWAYS someone who is looked upon in a harsher manner by the "public at large" for "making it so far" and "beating their favorites." This isn't by any means a "DisBoards" phenomenon. Read any message board or entertainment website and you'll see the same thing.

I don't really see any cattiness going on (and this is coming from someone who is a fan of Haley's). It's just a matter of opinion. People are upset that their favorites left and see Haley as the person who they deem undeserving. Same thing happens in the real world when it comes to jobs and promotions.

And I still stand by the fact that if anyone deserves to be angry it's me, as a male, for being upset that voters kicked Pia out too soon. If anything, I'm just happy that the ladies on this board don't have a David Cook to swoon all over this season. ;)

Thanks for the retrospective! Most of those names had long since been erased from my memory.

One man's cattiness is another man's difference of opinion. ;) But I can tell you, some really ugly comments have been made when it comes to Haley.

AI has lost his edge but still has the ratings to keep it going.
I wouldn't call what AI ever had "edge". I know you weren't necessarily using the word that specific way, but the mis-implication is too easy to make. AI was a ratings powerhouse - it still is, though not as strongly as before. That's not necessarily anything other than the best anyone could hope for.

... they need to realize they need more VARIETY to keep their audience coming back.
I think variety might be what's hurting AI. While there are many people who like every different type of music, there are also many people who only like certain types, and many people who like many types except for a couple. Multi-casting is a clear indicator of how fully television has recognized that its audience isn't inclined to "come together", as they did in the 1950s, around one specific show that everyone enjoys, but rather is such that they want what they watch to be more thoroughly customized to their own tastes. As AI tries to be all things to all people, it could be undercutting its own success.

We don't know what the voting reflects, one teenager with texting skills can beat my one sorry redial by leaps and bounds. If everyone got one or up to 5 votes and they were tracked by one source, THEN I'd believe it. With technology the way it is I have no faith in this so called "voting system".
ITA. I really wish they'd reveal how well the voting tracks against iTunes sales.

While I agree, I think Jennasis helped demonstration a lot of what's going on in these discussions:
Sure Haley can sing...but I dislike her singing. Macy Gray can sing, but I dislike her singing too. Just not my thang.

but i don't think Simon actually came around to David Cook until after the final two competed. then, he predicted that David Cook would win. but he did not seem to want DC to win that year at all.

David Cook can, and did, sing anything. that was the last season that had a truly smart, well-rounded contestant.

ETA: i don't think David Cook needed any help either. ;)

I think he needed help in the regard that David Archuletta looked like he was going to win more. Cook had to get a lot of people to vote for him to beat out all of the tweens voting for Archuletta.

I really don't think Simon ever showed that he wanted anyone to win:laughing:

Just listened to the Hayley link. Very dramatic and professional....

orchestra. Still not hearing anything that sets her apart from any ( non-tv) high school glee club. Nothing that should have her in the top 3 spot, that is for sure. I find it a shame as I prefer blues, jazz type stuff. She just does not break the surface of soulful. Sorry, I appreciate the link in trying to defend her *talent*, just not hearing it.

Exactly. It's exactly how I feel about Scotty and Lauren. ugh... I'd rather see an attitude over an insecure sniffler and a hyped up non sexy teen idol. Ugh times 2.

hyped up non sexy teen idol :rotfl:......
insecure sniffler with a *twang* ;)

honestly, do you think the lowering the age to 15 was a plus this year?:rolleyes1

Don't you think we are wasting our energy if we are trying to change each others' minds? We all like different things, what's wrong with that?

I love Toby Keith, I love Billie Joe Armstrong - two controversial artists that many people absolutely hate. I've seen them both in person and it only made me love them more. Nothing will change that.

I absolutely hate rap music, to me it should be used to torture prisoners of war :lmao: Nothing anyone here says can change the fact that it makes me want to stick a screwdriver in my ear.

Viva la difference! :upsidedow

:worship:
I think Idol is going with Viva La Tween....the huge $ spending market of that age.

Nobody is trying to change anybody's minds, I don't think. They're just stating their point of view...some more strongly than others.

I wouldn't ever try to change anyone's minds, no more than anyone can change mine.

Heck talk about controversial, my favorite artists are James Brown and Michael Jackson... ya THINK I've heard druthers about them??? For over FORTY years!! :lmao:

btw, I hate rap music, too, snappp, and so does my 18yo son! :lmao: I actually hate it more than country if THAT'S possible.

so my coworker just came over to share these 2 Idol updates:

Apparently Pia and Mark Ballas form DWTS have broken up...SHOCKER!
AND......according to a statement from Joe Perry of Aerosmith, since the band does not have a current reason to do a promo show, such as an album about to release or a tour, they will NOT be on the Idol finale..ok, now that hurts. That was the only reason left to watch it. I hope it is in an incorrect rumor, but more than likely even Aerosmith sees what a train wreck the finale will be, that and maybe some bad blood still going on.

Randy gave the hugest gift to Haley when he singled her out and not going to the final 3, he knows the reverse psychology and also knew that they need to pit 2 girls in there. Just guessing but since a country finale is not the best idea either, Scotty or Lauren will go home (no matter what the voters say).
What a bummer on Aerosmith, guess they didn't want to bother if James wasn't gonna still be in the running, lol.

ETA: She heard the updates on the radio, no idea which station but we are in Chicago

nah, just a really good manager...who can sell them for all they are worth, actually sell them for way MORE than they are worth. Ever hear some of the *amazing* money makers live? Frightening.

Uh..I disagree, it takes more than a good manager. Weaklings will be chewed up and spit out.

Agree with damo. I'm not seeing people trying to change anyone's mind about who they like and who they don't like. Obviously, everyone has their own taste and opinions. The only thing I was trying to do (apparently a futile attempt in some cases ) is get people to stop the unnecessary personal attacks on these kids.

Well it gets a little heated between posters sometimes, that is what I was referring to. :)
