American Idol: Season 10 PART III

Who are the experts on the show you are referring to? The judges? Jimmy Iovine? I don't recall anyone saying that. The judges didn't like particular song choices for her and how she did in parts of them, but they also said that about the others from time to time. There were many times when they raved about her singing. I just don't remember them saying she wasn't as great as some of the bloggers thought. :confused3

Sorry to take so long to reply, busy weekend. My reference to the experts on the show was about the judges. My thoughts were based on all of the comments that I have been reading from Hayley fans that complained about how she was singled out for more criticism than the others. There was such an outcry from her fans that I assume that they felt like she was getting undeserved feedback. In fact her fans seemed to rally support around the idea that the judges weren't fair to her. I personally did not feel like the judges unfairly criticized Hayley, in fact I thought the judges needed to give her and everyone else even more constructive feedback.

That's the issue most Haley fans have in a nutshell. When you say "James set the bar" with his "Don't Stop Believin'" which was not at all bar-setting and then you criticize Haley (and perhaps rightly so) for "Earth Song," it creates a notion that there isn't parity in the criticism this season.

Just because Lauren in 16, doesn't mean she doesn't deserve criticism. The big issue with the season to me is that the judges actually were moderately decent at the beginning, giving some constructive feedback in the first three weeks (J. Lo telling Naima that she needs to be careful when she's running around to maintain voice control stands out as constructive criticism to me), but that became nonexistent as the weeks passed.

I mean, remember, the judges PRAISED Jacob Lusk's "No Air" and then went on to criticize ONLY HALEY for singing the unreleased Lady Gaga track which they criticized because she sang a song that no one knew...when only the week before they criticized her for singing Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" for picking a song that everyone knew. The doublespeak was ridiculous.

Admittedly, I was not a fan of Haley at the beginning, but without a doubt, the judges' comments to her which I couldn't help but feel were unfair and undeserving riled me up and made me pick up the phone and vote in Top 4 and Top 3 week...something I rarely do.

Constructive criticism makes these kids become better performers. The one negative feedback Scotty got after he sang "Swingin'," shaped him into a better performer in the ensuing weeks. Same could be said for Haley. She blossomed BECAUSE OF the criticism, but the lack of criticism for others both halted their growth and rallied people behind Haley who felt she shouldn't be receiving the full brunt of the negative critiques.

Opinions on artistic matters are worlds different than a medical opinion. The two can't be compared. I know the types of music that I like and the opinion of an expert does not influence me at all. Medical advice is built upon volumes of medical education that is more cut and dried.

At least the opinions from the experts on the show agreed that Hayley was not as great as some of the bloggers thought. That is what all of the outcry about the judges being unfair to poor little Hayley was about. Since the show judges were being paid to give their opinions that probably makes their feedback better than "expert" opinions from friends of random internet posters. That is if you believe experts' opinions should determine what kind of music that you should like. I don't.

Thanks for replying! :) You know, I don't even remember if/how Haley was criticized in the beginning weeks. At that point, Haley didn't stand out to me and I couldn't even tell you what she sang. I really only took notice of her beginning with Bennie & The Jets, which the judges loved. I think it was mainly the week she sang the Earth Song and Randy and JLo's worthless criticism that got her fans riled up. They were told to pick a song that inspired them. They didn't say "pick a song that inspires you, but only if it's a popular song, and don't pick one where you will be compared to the original artist, and make it one that will get the crowd up on their feet". That's why I believe Haley was frustrated with the judges' comments that week. I don't think the judges were only hard on her every week, but they did let others pass who could have gotten the same feedback. I mean, how many people had ever heard of some of Casey's song choices? But the judges didn't give him flack for his choice of songs.

Having said all that ;), I don't understand from your explanation how you came to the conclusion that "at least the opinions from the experts on the show agreed that Haley was not as great as some of the bloggers thought". :confused3 That is a pretty big leap - in fact, I can't see any connection at all.

Right, and then they raved over her and Casey's duet of "Moanin'" :confused3 How many people had ever heard of that one before? Not I!

I probably am not explaining it well but I thought that it followed that since Hayley's supporters were rallying around what they thought was unfair criticism from the judges that meant that they held a higher opinion of Hayley than the judges.

Darnit...now I feel like I have to watch...or at least record and fast-forward through the 90% of stuff I have no desire to see...
I wouldn't be surprised if that was part of the calculus that went into deciding that, for what I believe may be the first time ever, a third place contestant is to have a solo in the finale. I know I discussed with my wife simply skipping AI this coming week, not out of spite, but just because we have so many other things to do. But with Haley performing solo, that might make it work tuning in.

Good morning to my new friends. :lovestruc

Sorry to be MIA but this weekend was loaded with fun and I haven't been on the boards at all.... not even mouse-aid.

We got to spend some time with some old friends that I haven't seen in about fifteen years and we had a great time sharing some stories about the day with my bride. I even had to do some explaining afterwards. ;)

I tried to read back a little and I can tell you ALL are excited :goodvibes about tomorrow night and Wednesday night.

Just turn on the TV and listen to some good music and enjoy ! :rolleyes1

I've got a little bit of work to get caught up, but I'll be back later for the fun chit chat. :flower3:

She's also been around for 12 years. That's a long time, so 14,000 doesn't really prove much, especially if she was more involved in earlier years.

....YEAH - the ONLY exception to the 'rule' is ME.....who is both a chatterbox AND and oldie-but-goodie...:teeth: popcorn::

While I have watched AI all season long I have not posted here much because you all (for the most part) are tucked into bed when I am watching it....

....LIAR - you're usually drinkin' that cheap*ss rum with Grumpy Pirate down there in San Diego, the pirate capital of the world....popcorn::

Let's face it, the average AI viewer doesn't care what musicians think, they care what THEY think and they know what they do and do not like. Period. Good heavens, we have JUSTIN BIEBER, for pity's sake...

...oh NO - NOT the "J" word! :scared1:

:thumbsup2

I would say it couldn't get any worse but I said that LAST year... and BOY did it!!

Next year I expect 3 people burping, 4 barfing and 3 more pooping. That's the only thing I could imagine to be WORSE than this year.:laughing:

....:confused3 no nose-pickers??

I wonder if J-Lo and Randy will criticize her for singing a song nobody knows? ;)

Well, it that depends...what's scripted by the producers. ;) Since, it's in their best interest, sales wise, Randy, will probably say, "Haley, you SLAYED IT! That's what, i was talking about! That was hot!". Jlo, "I'm so proud, you finally know, who you are. Blah, blah, blah,"

And Steven will say, "those two FINALLY GET IT! By the way, that dress is beautiful, and so was the song."

...you forgot one:

"...she's IN it, to WIN it!" :rolleyes1
