ALOHA! The Polynesian Resort Information Thread: Summer 2011 Edition!

Cool-- I will be chasing a shot-out-of-a-cannon 6 y/o around the pool trying to make sure his earplug stays in (ruptured eardrum :sad2: ). See y'all there!

 Hope his ear is better by than (I am sure it will be) :yay:

I am having such a battle in my mind regarding my reservation! My heart wants to stay at the POLY, which is what I am currently booked for next Sept 29-Oct 4......but my head is Having such a struggle with the cost, and I am having questions about whether there will be enough space for us, etc....
I am booked in a garden view club level with free basic dining plan for 4 disney adults....my 2 teen sons are coming with me and my best friend. The boys are pretty big, and I am wondering if they are going to fit in that sofa bed?? My girlfriend doesn't mind using the sofabed and the boys can share a queen bed if need be, but I would rather it be the kids relegated to the sofa bed if possible! (I am the one paying for most of this, so it is in my hands.)
I could get 2 rooms at POFQ for about $1000 less than what I am paying to stay POLY club level.....and upgrade to deluxe dining for that price.....part of me thinks I should make the switch, and save money for our horrendous airfare costs (about $700 pp) and part of me, my sentimental side is thinking....volcano pool :lovestruc, wishes from the pool, :lovestruc , tiki lit paths:lovestruc, beautiful ambience :lovestruc....

I have never stayed POLY and always wanted to experience it, but I don't know if it is the best choice for this trip anymore. I will be back to Disney again in 2016 for my DH's and my 25th anniversary, so this is not a once in a lifetime trip.....I am really torn and wish I could just make a decision I can be content with! :confused3 For those who've stayed at the POLY or who are there currently, are those rooms/ and sofa beds big enough to give 4 adults the space needed to be comfortable in one room together???

The sofa bed is really only a day bed that holds one person. You can't fit 2 on that especially if they are big.

Just so you know chimo2u the sofa bed is not a sofa bed in the sense that it is a pull out couch. It is a daybed and will only sleep one person. I don't know if that affects your decision.

Thanks so much for that...yes, that is a big factor, and I am sensing it will play into my decision. I appreciate the info! :goodvibes maybe the POLY is not the best choice for this trip....

 Hope his ear is better by than (I am sure it will be) :yay:

If only! It's a pretty big hole, for which he has to have a second surgery next month. He also can't hear out of that ear right now, so I'll probably be doing a lot of shouting too. So yeah, it's gonna be Earplug City for us. It won't stop us from having an awesome time though!

Hi everyone. Well we are 93 days out. I am taking my 12 year old niece and 16 year old nephew and my husband. I was wondering if you guys had any advice, ideas, tips for anything special at the poly or even a tip or anything about takling kids. Heck it is normally hubby and I so I am kinda lost.

We'll be there at the same time! I think the kids will have a blast..Disney usually gives the freedom to act like a kid again :cool1: I know this isn't in your plan at all, but have you considered doing a Universal day? My almost 10 yo loves Harry Potter and couldn't wait to see the WWOHP last year. We are going again this time. :wizard: I didn't know if your niece and nephew like that sort of thing.

I think you know that I will not be packed until the morning of departure :rotfl: at least it's only DH and I....

So Mar, about my foot, it's funny, well NOW it is....I dropped a frozen chicken and broke it. It happened last Tuesday, and I was in a cast, but I was upgraded to a walking boot yesterday (for good behavior) Not really, it's a trial. If I am pain free with the boot, I can do Disney with the boot...if not back to the cast....So far so good:goodvibes

OMG, how horrible. :grouphug: I hope you are not in any pain. Well on the bright side at least it happened last week so you had a couple of weeks to heal before your trip.

Back in 2008 our DS had a walking boot due to his ankle surgery and he loved the fact that he could take the boot off at night. I also loved it because he was able to wash his foot.

Yeah, I didn't think you would be packed but I thought I would ask anyway. You know me, I would have been packed two months ago.

Oh my your poor little guy. I hope all goes well with his second surgery.:grouphug:

I think you should stick with the Polynesian since it's so wonderful and bring a blow up mattress for the other son. There is plenty of room for the bed to be propped up against a wall during the day.

I was worried the character dining might not be something they wanted to do, but they want the "Whole Dinsey Experence" quote from Nephew.
Any other ideas, suggestions, tips?

Thanks,
Lori

We started going to Disney when our two DSs were 6 & 8 and they are now 16 & 18 and we still do character dining and we all still love it.....even the boys ;). We had a blast at 1900 Park Fare watching both DSs play it up with the step sisters......it was hilarious how they played right into it and had a great time . I think your niece and nephew will have a great time.....you're never too old for Disney and characters :goodvibes.

So your niece & nephew may enjoy it more than you think.

I agree ::yes::.

I so agree that it feels like yesterday for me bringing our DS to kindergarten as well. Back then I would have to bend down to give him a hug. Now he bends down to give me a hug.:rotfl:

I am right there with you on taking our DS with us for as long as he will let us as well. Maybe one day, he will offer to take me and DH with him for a change. Oh wait reality just smacked me in the head. Besides, I wouldn't expect him too.

Same thing here.......my oldest has to bend down to give me a hug too . I am not looking forward to the day the boys don't go to Disney with us. My DH laughs at me because I'm already planning on the day when they have families of their own and we can take them all :rotfl:.

Secret update....I overheard DD telling daddy the secret yesterday :confused3 Which is OK, he doesn't know we are staying CL  However I was instructed today DO NOT CHANGE FROM THE POLYNESIAN

9 days :dance3::dance3:

I'm sure he'll still be surprised :goodvibes. Nine days will be gone before you know it :dance3:.

I think you know that I will not be packed until the morning of departure :rotfl: at least it's only DH and I....

Packing the morning of departure would be WAY TOO CLOSE for comfort for me :scared1:. I hope your foot heals quickly for your trip .

The Poly is an awesome resort and the rooms are huge!!!! But as far as the daybed, as the others have said, it's not big enough for 2 people to sleep on. Good luck deciding. POFQ would definitely provide the extra space and bed, but the Poly is an amazing resort and it's hard to beat the location ;).

How about the boys share one queen bed and you and your friend can alternate between the other bed and the daybed every night? Just my 2 cents. Good luck deciding (P.S. I'd go with the Poly) :thumbsup2

Like a pp mentioned an air mattress would be a great solution, or have your BF sleep on the daybed. It is really comfy and I would have NO issues sleeping there! As far as POFQ vs Poly, with 2 teens I would be at the Poly 100%. This way you and your BF can enjoy the resort and relax a little, and they can hop on the monorail or boat and have easy access to MK & EP without the stresses of catching the right bus. You can't beat the location and given the fact you/your BF and the teens may have different activity/energy levels it would be the easiest stress free location. :lovestruc

The first time I took my kids to WDW they were 13 and 15. I knew they's love the rides & so forth--but they loved the character dining! My youngest jumped up and clapped at every character meal we went to, and the older joined her. I have some wonderful photos of the 2 of them w/ characters. They especially enjoyed the character meals where the characters could speak, like Askershus & 1900 Park Faire, cause my too-clever-for-their-own-good teens loved verbally sparring with the characters. I enjoyed watching my 13 yo leave the wicked step mother actually speechless for a moment when my DD said "Well I've had 4 step mothers so I know how to deal with you"! Hilarious. So your niece & nephew may enjoy it more than you think.

Hope you have a great trip!

Thanks, I sure hope so.

I am sure you'll have a fantastic time. Best wishes and prayers for a successful second surgery. Glad he can enjoy the Poly first...We are almost there....:banana:

I was SO happy to wash my foot, and shave my legs  It is heavy, but it IS very comfortable.

Next week, next week.....I think I will be well mended for the trip. I just need to take it easy :lovestruc

My BFF would sleep on the floor (so would I) but I can definitely see where it would be better having more beds, extra bathroom, etc.....so good luck choosing chimo
