ALOHA! The Polynesian Resort Information Thread: October 2013

Well, after talking with my husband about the construction (and his remembrance of how it was in November) I changed to Contemporary Resort Theme Park View. Too many chances for late May and we really enjoy the side of the resort that's closer to TTC. We'll give the Poly another try once everything calms down

Does anyone know how long will it take me to get from the Polynesian to Hollywood for a SciFi Galatic Breakfast beginning at 8:00 a.m. What time should I leave the resort? I assume a bus is the best way to get there directly from Poly?

I believe it's about a 20 minute bus ride, but I would give yourself at least an hour, so maybe 7am? Is it on an actual Star Wars Weekend day? Or during the week sometime?

Its not SWW. Its Monday. But it is also "May the 4th" be with you so rumors are itll be a bit busier. Thank you.

It is not open yet. They are trying to have it ready for April 1st though.

I'm traveling with the magical deal and got my letter last week.

My letter doesn't state through winter 2015. It states through early 2016.

Does Captain Cooks currently have any outdoor seating available? We always enjoyed sitting at the outdoor tables near the volcano pool on past trips.

I don't really think anything makes it special per se. We ended up in the club level because we wanted a lagoon view room on the east side -- before we knew about the bungalows -- and the only way to get that was to go to Hawaii. We requested Tahiti, but it's gone now. Our previous two trips had been great -- the kids could go out on the beach at night, watch the fireworks and the boat parade and then come back in, and that's what we had hoped to replicate. We didn't know -- and weren't told -- of the extend of the destruction, or else I would have moved.

I'd stayed club before and was unimpressed, but you get into a "but this is what we're paying for" mentality that had us locked into the idea of club level this time.

But if you're asking me is there anything fundamentally special about club level in general, I don't think so. If you're asking about the Poly, for the time we were there, being club level was the worst place to be, and they knew it. The concierges were annoyed most of the time because people kept complaining about the same things day after day. Because beach access was limited, the lounge was over crowded and you had to stake out seats before the fireworks. And with the new round of construction at the quiet pool, things will be just as bad on the south as they were on the north.

You asked about the TTC path -- they reroute it to the parking lot, so there's a fenced off sidewalk that goes next to the large parking lot and the main Poly entrance street. They've got it fenced to prevent people from walking across the street, so it ends up being maybe 300 yards longer than it used to be -- not the end of the world, I know, but different.

The rerouted path to the TTC is no where near even a 100 yards longer.

Winter 2015 would not start until December 22 so chances are it will push into early 2016.

There's a new construction permit for the Poly lobby that goes into September 2015. Does anyone know what they will be working on?

So is the quiet pool open as long as the main pool is closed. I know that they are starting construction on the quiet pool starting beginning of April.
And the main pool is to open then. But what if the main pool isn't open yet?

They will not start construction on the quiet pool until the main pool is complete. All of this will hopefully occur on/around April 1. But they will always have at least one pool open and operational!

There are some tables outside at Pinapple Lanai, so maybe you can sit out there to eat?

While I don't want to argue with someone who spends as much time at the Poly as you, I can just tell what I experienced. The old path kept you on the lake side of the sidewalk from the TTC, and you picked it up and were finished in the middle of the east side, depending on your longhouse. The new path makes you walk all the way around that turnaround -- you can't cut across it because it's fenced -- and then walk down to the street, past the parking lots until you're past the laundry, and then you can head north again into the resort. At leas tot us, it felt like a significantly longer walk. Others may have different opinions, but it's disingenuous to suggest the path is only slightly changed. What used to be a tropical entrance to a resort now is a fenced off part of the sidewalk.

Another short update. It appears the pool deck has been poured on the side closest to the boat launch dock (from the rock formation towards the beach, in front of the new marina building). They have also had the jets running in the pool. This would be in keeping with our thoughts that they are doing tests. There also seem to be a lot of rock formations now over where the hot tub is going.

Also, tonight the electrical water pageant barges were out in the lagoon in front of the Poly for a couple of hours. They seemed to be playing with sight lines. I know since at least our trip last fall the first barge has gone dark and pulled away once the floats on the second barge started to light up (in the past, and still now in front of the other lagoon resorts both strings of barges normally stay lit for the whole show). Our guess is that it changed at the Poly due to the bungalow construction. But now with DVC due to open we're thinking they're trying to figure out the angles with the bungalows so that the EWP can be shown properly in front of the Poly again. Interestingly for tonight's actual EWP the first barge still went dark, then after the show was over both strings of barges lit up again as they were pulled around towards the CR (they always pull them into position with the lights off). Interesting to watch them playing around with things.
