All resort non-smoking

If the next balcony over is smoking, believe it or not it smells very foul on my balcony.

I don't like drunk driving either, but banning drinking in the Disney Resorts will not solve that problem. Actually, it would likely cut down on the drunks driving home from the bars!

I won't address the food thing.

It would be interesting to see the stats on Health Insurance rising costs due to all the different health problems caused by poor eating habits of Americans.

If someone saw PETA or the American Heart Assoc. outside of Le Cellier(sp? I don't eat steak, sorry) asking persons not to eat red meat, it might be offensive to some of us. Others like vegetarians, who may have better health for not eating red meats, might agree. I'm not arguing just saying that the cost for any and all bad habbits comes out of everyone's pocket somewhere.

What is done is that Disney has made that decision for everyone. Now, if we can just make Disney realize to start asserting themselves for all the other policies that are broken daily we can all be happy. Or will we?

As I said, it's not about what is good or bad for you. It's whether or not the action affects other people.
Simply taking offense to something (your meat example) doesn't really quailify as affecting other people.
I find men wearing bikini bathing suits offensive, but I don't have to look at them while I'm taking a shower, sleeping, or any other activity in my room.

In reality, you have been getting a bargain. Smoking increases room maintenance costs and property insurance rates for the resorts. To be fair, those additional costs should all be borne by smoking members, but DVC distributes these costs evenly among all members through the maintenance fees (same for smokers and nonsmokers). So smokers basically owe nonsmokers for 15 years of inflated MFs.

Folks have noted the number of DVC contracts currently up for sale on the resale market.

It would be interesting if there were a link between that and this new policy.

After all, if the policy appeared in Vacation Magic magazine, then it was known at least a month ago -- and clearly Disney was discussing it well prior to that point.

This new policy has only just been announced so unless the folks selling those contracts were privy to talks going on inside Disney, there is no connection. Most of us have not yet received the issue of Vacation Magic in which this information appears. Had this been announced a month ago, believe me, we would have been having this very discussion at that time. News this big would have hit the boards immediately.

I may end up in your room the next day. Your smoke smells stay behind.

At least in my backyard I can move. I'm very confined while sitting on my balcony. There is just no where to move out of the smoke path.

I like to listen to my surround sound cranked up at night. I know I can't do that because of neighbors. That would affect other people, and yes, that is a restriction on me.

The thing is, lots of our fathers are still in it, and they are lifelong smokers!!!! They are not going to be able to drop a 65 year habit just because of the whims of modern society, and all the self-righteous nonsmokers out there who whine if a whiff of smoke passes their way on a balcony.

This Disney rule is not asking lifelong smokers to stop smoking. The rule simply requires anyone who chooses to smoke to do so in designated areas, rather than in places where other people would be adversely affected.

This prevents me from taking my 80 year old dad on vacation with us, and it makes me resentful as all get out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do not totally agree with this rule.
I do think you should not smoke in a room or your own house for that fact and most people do not.
But by limiting where you can smoke including on a balcony may force more people to smoke inside the room especilaly and mainly those who only smoke a few a day...
I have asked for room changes when rooms really smelt like smoke.
I do not think Disney will enforce this and it would be hard to as most of the rooms in Disney have been smoked in at some point or another...
I am not talking about those who smoke a pack a day but those who have one with there morning coffee or after dinner etc.
Again I do not agree with smoking in the room
as far as it making $$ sense I can understand part of this but for all who think they could not do this with food... They already are they have clearly marked healthy choices and more health concious CS places period and the majority does want this and this makes $$ sense as well... just as people tried to sue McDonalds for having a NO longer available super size meal the same can be said about the dinning plan as this is a lot of food... how many have desert with lunch?? also double burgers super size hot dogs deep fried deserts and the list goes on.. as far as TS it tastes so good because of all the butter and sauces it is cooked in...

I am in shock and utter disbelief at some of the rude comments being made by the people who don't like the policy.

First off, the people on this forum didn't make the policy. The fact they like it does not make them your enemy.

Second, did you really not see this happening? Major hotel chains have adopted this. California as a whole has adopted this. Disney is out to keep the majority happy - and the majority in this country agree that public locations (including hotels and workplaces that are indoors) should be smoke free.

I'm sorry about some of the inconveniences this will cause. I understand that some people may make the choice to stay home because of this (honestly I believe that is a VERY VERY VERY VERY tiny number). But do not blame innocent people who simply agree with this policy. It can get real ugly if we go that route.

First of all, I am very considerate. I don't smoke in my car, my home, hotel rooms, around children or anyone else. I can live with this policy. I do have issues with the use of the patio/balcony, but I can live with it. (Outside is outside) I'll have to whip up some other stinky gas on the balcony.

I find non-smokers or ex-smokers to be the more inconsiderate people, especially at WDW. They are usually nasty about it also. Here are 2 examples from the last 2 visits;

1) This last time it was in a DVC hotel parking lot. I was the only person in the entire parking lot until this "lady" showed up and started yelling at me about stinking up her air! Gee, I hope she didn't start up her car and have to breath the fumes! Better not go on the highway or sit in the toll gates, more fumes! O and how about those diesel trucks! Yuck!
2) The time before that a lady sat down next to me with her children. Told me I should put it out as there were children there. How dare I! This was in a DESIGNATED smoking area in MGM.

If one more person chews me out for smoking in a designated smoking area or in a parking lot at WDW I am going to loose it. I ALWAYS run into at least one self absorbed jerk that b*tches IN a smoking area.

As they reduce the places, I will no longer have patience or hold my tongue with these people. If they feel they need to wag their tongue, I will also.

Also, in IMHO, as the smoking places are reduced people will "sneak one" in more non smoking places where they usually wouldn't.

Please realize that it's now possible for many families to visit WDW who were not able to go to WDW back when second-hand smoke and smoke residue were inescapable.

While it makes for good PR for Disney to say they are doing this for the health of their guests, these things generally come down to money. I expect Disney crunched the numbers to see how many guests they would lose with this nonsmoking policy and compared that to the savings from reduced fire insurance costs and cleaning costs and savings on health insurance from providing mousekeeping with a smoke free work environment.

As to whether this will carry over to the food Disney serves, I don't see that happening. If Disney eliminated all of their fattening food options in an effort to force guests to eat healthy they would lose a lot of business. It makes financial sense to provide some healthy options for people (like DH and I) who wouldn't eat on property otherwise, but based on how few healthy options there are, I'd say DH and I are in the minority of their customer base.

Again, I don't see Disney's new nonsmoking policy being about better health -- it's about Disney reducing costs.
