All resort non-smoking

ex smoker saying "hip, hip, hooray"; nothing worse than sitting on your balcony savoring a cup of coffee and the fantastic view, when the waifting stench of cigarrette (or even worse cigar) smoke assults you.

look on the bright side, maybe annual dues won't increas this year; via a reduction in the fire insurance costs.:)

That is exactly what happened when I was there last , a cigar and that smell travels more I think.
Also should save on costs of furnishings to from burn holes in fabric etc and just general cleaning of the rooms/

I'm so glad this was posted - I have Local 6 news on and saw "No smoking policy Disney Resort Hotels" on the scroll across the bottom of the screen, but they have not had a story on it, nor is there anything on the 3 local station web sites as of a few minutes ago - I thought I was going crazy - I even re-wound to make sure I really saw it.

This is very good news for all who are bothered by smoke. A bold step by Disney.

In reality, you have been getting a bargain. Smoking increases room maintenance costs and property insurance rates for the resorts. To be fair, those additional costs should all be borne by smoking members, but DVC distributes these costs evenly among all members through the maintenance fees (same for smokers and nonsmokers). So smokers basically owe nonsmokers for 15 years of inflated MFs.

I find it hard to believe my MF will not go up as much due to Disney cutting smoking rooms. There were only 3.5% rooms able to be smoked inside in the first place. The little amount of money that is being discussed here is money I will never see. Disney will definitely find somewhere to spend it.

or maybe the person who originated this policy will get a raise :lmao:

I assume you mean that he cannot get to smoking areas easily.

I do not mean for this to be sarcastic, and please forgive me for asking, but would you be able to help him get to designated smoking areas?

I'm sorry that you're disappointed that you can no longer take your dad to WDW.

Please realize that it's now possible for many families to visit WDW who were not able to go to WDW back when second-hand smoke and smoke residue were inescapable.

Perhaps. I have no idea where the smoking areas will be at OKW. It's not set up for them. And with a resort so spread out, I'm sure it will be mighty inconvenient.

My dad smokes enough that this won't be practical to run out to a smoking area every time he wants a cigarette.

It would be perfectly practical to roll his wheelchair out to the balcony OUTSIDE for a cigarette, but now that is ruined by certain people who think THEIR rights trump MINE and my family's.

allearsnet.com now has the actual press release from an actual Senior VP. So it is for real, as also noted by LisaS. Still has not returned to DVC member web site though.

... but for all who think they could not do this with food... They already are they have clearly marked healthy choices and more health concious CS places period and the majority does want this and this makes $$ sense as well... just as people tried to sue McDonalds for having a NO longer available super size meal the same can be said about the dinning plan as this is a lot of food... how many have desert with lunch?? also double burgers super size hot dogs deep fried deserts and the list goes on.. as far as TS it tastes so good because of all the butter and sauces it is cooked in...

Anthony (good name), you raise some interesting issues regarding food options, but they are still a red herring. An inescapable problem with smoking is that it creates health problems for third parties (people *other* than the smoker), particularly people with asthma and allergies. These problems linger in a room after the smoker leaves, similar to pet dander (the pet policy IS a related issue, for those who want to appeal to something other than smoking). Smoking also creates additional clean-up costs (as do pets).

The food question does not have similar third-party corollaries. The health issues pertain only to the person making the choice to eat the bacon double cheeseburger. That choice does not affect anybody else's health or force the next guest in the room to ingest saturated fats and cholesterol.

So worry about healthy eating options all you want -- national healthcare policies and/or lawsuits may (who knows?) eventually affect food choices at WDW. But don't worry about DVC limiting your food choices as a logical extension of the new smoking policy -- there is no logical connection between the two. Disney will provide a range of dining options for as long as the economics dictate.

If you are looking for a possible link between smoking and food policies at WDW, it is money, not morality or healthcare.

Smoker checking in. Both DH and I smoke, but not in our home, not around children, and only in our car with the windows wide open. We both work at places with designated smoking areas, which we always use. When at WDW we always seek out the designated smoking areas to have a cigarette. We try to be very considerate smokers.

We went to DLR last year and stayed at DLH, which has no smoking anywhere in the hotel. So for each cigarette we went to the designated smoking areas outside. It was admittedly a bit of a pain, but we made do.

The only part of this change that irks me a little is that I can no longer smoke on the balcony of my own room. But I understand that it could cause discomfort to my fellow resort goers so I will faithfully trudge to the designated smoking areas at my resort.

At the same time I ask for a little respect in that it is still my right to smoke in this country legally and if I'm obeying the rules don't come to where I am to start a campaign of anti-smoking.

The unfortunate thing about these issues is that there is no such thing as win-win. If smoking were allowed, then some non-smokers would feel their rights were being stepped on. With smoking not allowed, there will be smokers who feel that their right to smoke is being stepped on.

You can't have it both ways with this particular issue, and someone is going to feel badly in either case.

That said, I don't think anyone on this board is responsible for the decision that was made, and blaming them for it is pointless.

True enough! But it is still unfair for nonsmokers to share the costs created by smoking. And 3.5% is just the current rate -- the numbers used to be higher and DVC has been around for 15+ years. Costs add up over time, and nonsmokers have been sharing the cost equally for all those years. In fact, there are ongoing costs associated with setting aside and maintaining smoking areas -- I suppose the oft-ridiculed nonsmokers will still be expected to share those costs.

1) This last time it was in a DVC hotel parking lot. I was the only person in the entire parking lot until this "lady" showed up and started yelling at me about stinking up her air! Gee, I hope she didn't start up her car and have to breath the fumes! Better not go on the highway or sit in the toll gates, more fumes! O and how about those diesel trucks! Yuck!
2) The time before that a lady sat down next to me with her children. Told me I should put it out as there were children there. How dare I! This was in a DESIGNATED smoking area in MGM.

If one more person chews me out for smoking in a designated smoking area or in a parking lot at WDW I am going to loose it. I ALWAYS run into at least one self absorbed jerk that b*tches IN a smoking area.

As they reduce the places, I will no longer have patience or hold my tongue  with these people. If they feel they need to wag their tongue, I will also.

More power to you! I may not smoke, and I definitely want a smoke-free room for health reasons, but you have every right to smoke guilt-free in designated areas.

I feel bad that this will restrict your ability to enjoy the resort, I really do. I wish there was a better soulution, like a smokers building.

But I am glad at the same time of the new policy, because, what about my right to enjoy my balcony next to your smoking balcony? Smoke carries, and it seeps into everything. I would rather there be smoking rooms, and that they did not have balconies. I don't want someone's smoke creeping over from the balcony area, blowing into my room.

Yes, I'm sure that's what all those smokers thought when they forked over 20 grand....that they wouldn't even be able to smoke on their own balcony.

Yes but it ISN'T thier balcony it is Disney's balcony that the guest is using for the week or whatever the length and just like going to somones house you abide by the OWNERS rules and this owner is Disney I am soooo happy they are finally going smoke free this is a banner day. This is also posted in teh business journel in Florida I will have to find the link and post it.

At DVC, I AM THE OWNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YEs yes yes! I'm so delighted about this. Personally I couldn't give a rat either way, but my MIL is a chain smoker. She wanted to come next visit, now she wont want to because she cant smoke 100 cigarettes a day. I wont have to be the baddie by saying I cant stand her and dont want her to ruin my holiday.

Yippee!!!!!!!!

Smoke doesn't seep into everything outside.

You can't step inside for 15 minutes while someone has a cigarette?

Edited to add: Thanks for showing some concern for people in my situation.

jodifla,

Please take a step away from board and take a few deep breaths. We didn't create the policy, Disney did.

I'm an owner too. Disney sets the policy -- Our ownership docs do not guarantee the right to smoke in our rooms or on our balcony.

And what about all the DVC owners who bought DVC thinking they could smoke? That's a lot of money to drop only to find out now you aren't welcome in your "home away from home."

What about all the people who made vacation plans a year ago, only to find out that now, THEY don't have a smoking room LIKE THEY WERE PROMISED?
I agree Jodifla,
Sure there is nothing we signed or nothing that promised as others have brought up, but it was always known that there were designated smoking rooms on disney property and at the DVC resorts. So for some, who signed on the dotted DVC line, I would think this would come as a minor (or major for some) blow. There is a commitment with DVC that doesn't exist with the other disney resorts.
As for smokers who stay in non DVC rooms, they can just choose not to go to WDW any more, or stay offsite. But with DVC, I think it's a little different. I think we might see some selling of contracts. I don't think we will, but it's up to dh because he is the smoker. I, personally, pray for the day he quits. So I am all for non-smoking. But I also am thinking about how the smokers must feel.

Now keep in mind, only my dh smokes in our family but he never does in the room/balcony. He walks out to the parking lot (we normally stay at OKW). But if he is going to have to go further than that, he's gonna be a bit steamed. For crying out loud, those wdw busses put out alot of exhaust fumes as well in those parking lots, as well as all the cars. So I am sitting tight to see where exactly these smoking areas are. I only read the first 4 pages of the thread, so maybe it's been mentioned.
Also, the different DVC resorts are set up differently. Like OKW and even SSR and VWL are not far from the main parking lot (maybe this is going to be a designated area ?). But BWV is pretty far from the valet parking lot. I've never stayed at BCV so not sure what the options are there.
