All resort non-smoking

Sweet. So you do realize this means another of the few HA rooms at BCV have magically opened up to me. Now I can try to book one of 15 rooms (instead of the paltry 12 rooms). Works for me.

Another red herring that is irrelevant in the context of WDW's smoking policy. How would this justify sticking nonsmokers with the costs associated with smoking? If smokers want smoking facilities, they should be happy to pay any extra costs, including increased property insurance premiums.

Just as people w/ no children should get a tax break and not have to pay for schools. I don't see too much of a differance. If my grandparents aren't going to be around to 'reap' the benefits of a good school system why should they pay?

Is this thread a contender for the "fastest growing thread ever" title?
I came home from work to see 12 pages of posts since this morning -- definitely a hot topic!!:surfweb:

Because a "bad school system" raises a crop of juvenile dilinquents who break into old people's houses to rob and kill them? :confused3

Yes but it ISN'T thier balcony it is Disney's balcony that the guest is using for the week or whatever the length and just like going to somones house you abide by the OWNERS rules and this owner is Disney I am soooo happy they are finally going smoke free this is a banner day. This is also posted in teh business journel in Florida I will have to find the link and post it.

I have never had an issue smoking outside on a friend's balcony. I always ask.

Their are quite a few happy non-smokers today! Including myself! I bet all the smokers out there are annoyed!

I personally think this was the smart move. For both health reasons, and maintenance fee reasons.

For people who think this new non-smoking initiative is a bad thing, just be glad that you don't live in one particular township in New Jersey. Forgot the name of it, but the town council voted to ban smoking in any vehicle (private vehicles included) if any minor was in that car. So, if you went to the supermarket with your kids and were caught smoking in your own car, you would be penalized.

I know it is a different topic but I think that would be great!! I think an adult should NOT be allowed to smoke in the car with a child that can't get their on their own. I wish all states would enact that law. I hate driving by a car with little kids (or even teenagers) in the backseat while mommy dearest puffs away up front. Really nice for the kids. :sad2:

Well your friends are nice anyone who smokes and visits our house has to go out to the sidewalk to smoke they are not able to smoke within 30 feet of our home. Not my parents or our friends no one.

Frankly, why would a smoker be friends with any one who doesn't care about them or their feelings at all, and makes them feel second class?

I'm lucky. I have GREAT friends. I bring my dad over to their houses, and we sit on the back porch and he can smoke, while watching my son swim.

I don't think it's fair that others should be expected to "step inside" to avoid smoke from someone else.

No fair! You expect smokers to "step outside". Well, we do. But thats not enough! Not only do you expect that we step outside to smoke, you expect that we go down to the parking lot to an area where the wind won't blow it back to your patio.

Again, tobacco is legal to purchase, possess and use. Does it make sense to have a product that is legally available, then put so many widespread restrictions upon where it can be used? Name another product that has similar restrictions that can also cause severe damage to other folks by its use...alcohol..nope you can drink almost anywhere on Disney property, and it can affect your neighbors, especially if you then decide to drive, which is legal until you reach the blood level limit in your state.

Disney doesn't police their rooms to the point of not allowing an addict to illegally use syringes of narcotics...they will even provide a needle disposal kit, no questions asked, they will assume the person is an insulin diabetic. So basically, smokers have less rights in their room than illegal drug addicts.

And remember, they sell cigs at Disney.

To keep this in context, we are talking about the choices that Disney makes as a business (probably for financial reasons). Disney is a business, not a public accommodation. It is free to make decisions that are legal and in its best interests. So by all means make the argument to Disney if you believe that they got the numbers wrong on this one.

But to respond to your question, it makes sense to put restrictions on legal products if there is a legitimate public health or safety concern. Smoke is a slippery substance with unfortunate health effects for both smokers and nonsmokers. The fact is (as you point out) that there ARE other legal products with restrictions for public health reasons. The fact that tobacco is more heavily restricted than some others is not a prima facie reason to reduce smoking restrictions -- some substance will necessarily be #1 on the list of restrictions. And you probably know as well as I do that the low level of alcohol restrictions in Western society is an issue of political expediency, not necessarily a reflection of the true societal cost of alcohol. ;)

When it comes to Disney, smoking it NOT #1 on the list of legal products that are restricted. Bicycles, as one example, are both legal and certainly more restricted than smoking in the parks. I see smokers frequently throughout the MK but have yet to encounter a cyclist. Pets in resorts would be another example of a legal "product" that people can enjoy freely at home but are subject to significant restrictions at WDW. But pets create costs and health concerns that give rise to restrictions in public places (and DVC). I have no doubt there are other examples (skateboards, etc.), but this post is growing much too quickly.

Your drug addict analogy is also a bit of a red herring. ;) If heroin or other narcotics were causing problems for WDW or other resort guests, then it would become an issue. I imagine most guests have no idea if the prior guests were using narcotics or insulin or alcohol or playing Monopoly, but I can tell immediately if somebody was smoking in a room. Most things other than smoke and pets (legal or not) tend not to leave any lingering evidence, nor do they affect the allergies or asthma of subsequent guests. It is probably also an imaginative leap to claim that drug addicts have more "rights" than smokers in DVC rooms. Without probable cause, Disney is not going to intrude on any of its guests. But if illegal drug use did come to its attention, I suspect that Disney would take stronger action against the users than it would against guests caught smoking.

I have no idea what your cig sales comment implies. :confused3 Disney sells cigarettes to make money and for the convenience of guests -- to enjoy in designated areas.

The thing is, lots of our fathers are still in it, and they are lifelong smokers!!!! They are not going to be able to drop a 65 year habit just because of the whims of modern society, and all the self-righteous nonsmokers out there who whine if a whiff of smoke passes their way on a balcony.

This prevents me from taking my 80 year old dad on vacation with us, and it makes me resentful as all get out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I HATE THIS POLICY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So be happy, all you people. You are denying me a vacation with my dad, who most likely doesn't have long to live. (Severe health issues.)[/QUOTE]

ok-I am sorry your father won't be able to travel because he can't smoke in the room....how is it us (the non-smokers) who are denying you a vacation with your dad? It sounds like he is denying it or you are-because you can always vacation somewhere with with a more lenient smoking policy if vacationing together is that important.:confused3

I bought DVC. I have an investment there. I expect them to keep their end of the bargain, which included a few smoking rooms.

My dad would like to quit. He's never been able to. He's tried several times. And at 80, and at the end of his life, he's not going to stop now, just to the MOB (ie. people who think it's fine to make smokers second class citizens) happy.

You're welcome at MY house Dave. We don't smoke inside, but we have a really nice deck, right off the dining room.

DH even has some great cigars if you like those!
