All resort non-smoking

Personally, I think this policy is a bad decision. More people will be exposed to second hand smoke by moving the smokers outside. If someone is performing an act that is harmful to the general public, they should be locked in their rooms to do it, not moving outside to the general public.

and I think most people just smoked on their balcony so the room would not smell like smoke.

Are you saying that smokers don't want their rooms to smell like smoke? If this is why smokers smoke on their balconies, you then understand why non smokers are pleased that WDW is banning smoking in the resorts.

I'd like to think a person wouldn't blow smoke in another person's face EVER:confused3

Assume you are just using a figure of speech in the heat of the moment.
It's hard to be in the minority and defend smoker's rights these days; when the majority of folk are interested in protecting their right not to breathe passive, second-hand smoke.

My MIL was in a nursing home, her room-mate had end stage lung cancer & was on oxygen (not a pretty sight). She couldn't understand why they wouldn't let her keep puffing away...on the cigarettes her family smuggled into her. After several warnings, they told the family to make other arrangements. Could have been a disaster, just goes to show how addictive tobacco is.:sad2:

It's getting harder for smokers to find a spot to indulge (think that may be the general objective for businesses/public places). Even the outdoor sports facilities have banned smoking...the winds of change.

I think many smokers travel with non smokers, so they smoke on the balconies.

Smoke doesn't cling to anything on the balconies.

I feel sorry for you that you won't be able to enjoy smoking @ WDW resorts after June 1. I'm not going to miss the smell though.

We are a non-smokers and during our recent stay at SSR the room next to us had a smoker and he was nice enough to use the balcony to smoke. The problem for us was that we couldn't use our balcony, or have the sliding door open, when he was out there smoking because the smoke kept blowing over on to our balcony. It was very frustrating for us because our DD (15 months old) insisted on being outside on the balcony when we were in the room. The smoker next door didn't have a problem with it since the smoke he was creating was not offensive to him. To us it was very offensive! My wife and I believe it's a violation of our right to breathe clean air when a smoker chooses to "light up".

I just think that if both parties smokers and non were a little more considerate it would be better for all. For example, if you are smoking on your balcony even though your not supposed to and somebody like myself comes out with babies, apologize or ask if we mind. Then either extinguish your butt and enjoy the view or see if that person minds, if they dont enjoy. Non smokers should do the same, come out and say hey i dont mind if u smoke or just stay in your room. Cant we all just get a long!!!!!!!!!!! :(

I am sure there are plenty of reformed smokers that enjoy the smell of tobacco on the wind! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would imagine that eventually Florida will be a 'smoke-free' state with regulations similar to what we have now here in New York...

I am quite happy about Disney's decision to move on this, more and more hotels are making this decision. You won't beleive how hard it is sometimes to get a room that has not been smoked in. Being a mom of a 9 yr old boy that is alergic to smoke and extremely sensitive to it, it makes me happy as a bug. No more worries about weezing and asthma attacks in the middle of the night caused by rooms that have the stagnant (sp) smell of smoke. I think it was only a matter of time before this happened. I'm sorry for those of you that don't feel this way, but you have to understand what I go through with my child and his reaction to smoke. For the same reason, we won't book a room ANYWHERE that allows pets.

Non-smoker here, more concerned with how this policy was implemented and what it could mean in the future. I wonder how people would feel if certain other changes took place because only a small percentage utilize them. For example, what percentage of EPCOT visitors enter via World Showcase? It might be cost effective for Disney to close that entrance. There are many, many changes Disney can make that can affect any of us, so don't lose sight of that in your excitement over the Smoking Ban.

This is the crux of the matter, but this has always been true. Disney has made innumerable changes through the years for business reasons and will continue to do so. If you go to WDW long enough, something that you value will eventually disappear or change dramatically -- where is River Country, 20K Leagues Under the Sea, the Skyway, ...? All victims of cost-benefit analysis. What comes next is anybody's guess, but I think BW, BC, YC, and ESPN Zone make the backdoor entrance to EPCOT safe for the foreseeable future.

I'm in Ohio and the final regulations are coming on line for our non-smoking law. Can't smoke anywhere at Fifth Third Field anymore(they had a small area out in left field) and our local "town center" type out door mall removed all the ashtrays and no smoking is allowed even in the parking lots.

Yeah, this happens all the time... be thankful it won't anymore as of June 1st.

There is some dead horse beating going on in this thread and I can't believe it hasn't been closed yet! Nothing any one of us will say will change Disney's mind at this point. It has nothing to do with us "whiners" or "morals" either -- it's a business decision. Those that can't accept it need to move on to another hotel that WILL allow smoking -- if they still can still find one of those.

I applaud Disney's decision, as will future generations who won't have to worry about a smoking neighbor.

As tfc3rid mentioned about NY, the ENTIRE STATE of Ohio is now smoke-free in public places including food establishments, bars, etc. We voted on it, and it passed. I enjoy not having to worry about a neighboring booth deciding to light up, even though I was in the "non-smoking" section.

The bane of all threads... lack of interest. When people decide they are no longer interested in a thread 1) they can post that it should be closed, or 2) they can simply not open it anymore. The second method is historically more effective than the first.

This will inevitably lead to smokers who have spent 20 large on dvc feeling like pinocchio! "The world owes me a living!" All you need is one person feeling like smoking in that room because it is their "right" to stink it up for the next 1000 occupants. One by one every room will smell like smoke because there are no designated rooms.

(disclaimer ;) ) Assuming this policy is official.........

I think this possibility is exactly why Disney WILL enforce the rule. If they don't, the ensuing problem will be much worse than it is at present; I'm sure Disney realizes this. Working out the specifics may be what took them so long to enact the new policy in the first place.

I don't pretend to know any inside Disney information (I wish! :) ) but I'm certain that they would have researched the subject thoroughly before jumping into a controversial policy. They obviously feel that they can/will enforce the policy and that the percentage of people who will be unhappy is smaller than the percentage who will be ecstatic. (I believe that has been well-demonstrated in this thread....)

As a side note.....charging the owner for smoking violations would also affect the commercial renting market....a win/win for Disney?

Actually, WDW modifies its policies all the time if enough complaints happen... so don't be SO sure this will last forever in exactly the same form.

I think a lot of the success of the policy will depend upon where they have placed the smoking areas. If they are accessible, then people will go there to smoke. If not, diehard smokers will sneak smokes everywhere.

It's going to be interesting when nonsmokers start getting charged erroneously for smoking in their room. But I'm sure all the nonsmoking zealots will be happy to fork over $500 for the cause.

I can also see lots of family fights resulting from smokers who won't go out to the smoking area. That's going to make for a lot of fun family vacations. Feel the magic!

Only in designated smoking area and I can avoid them. Not in restaurants or on patios/balconies.

The front door of a resort is not a designated smoking area.

WRONG-O! On our Feb stay at OKW [where we could NOT get a smoking room because they were ALL occupied!] we did have a designated smoking area outside the front of the studio villa next to our one bedroom.

So being the law abiding folks that we are, that's where we went to smoke - and did it ever aggrevate the folks in the studio!!! We could look into their villa each time they went out, they had to walk thru the smoke to get to their car and it was an end unit so the smoke wrapped out to the balcony side anyway. I think what really got to them was when we were joined by some folks we met at the pool and enjoyed after dinner drinks with our smokes in the designated area - the guys were enjoying cigars and we had a boom box there also [not played at broadcasting volume].

Looks like that will be the norm from now until we find a timeshare that will permit us to smoke on a patio or balcony. I am mad enough to go out and buy cheap cigars and just light them and leave them to stink up the designated areas! Might even light up those stinky citronella candles on my patio - or are candles outlawed, too?

Wow, I think you have some anger issues that need to be dealt with. Really hope your next visit to WDW can be just as "Magical".

But won't that just cause more complaints from nonsmokers, causing Disney to move the designated areas even further away? Not sure what you are trying to accomplish here.
