Alaska - May 17-24

What a bike ride! I don't think I would be able to do that. And what about that bear? It looks like it was pretty close to you. I'd be worried about being its dessert. :scared1:

And I loved the photos of the quilts. How beautiful were they? Very! :thumbsup2

As with Skagway, many beautiful photos before even getting off the ship

Hi!

Lovely photos, you have a very good eye! Regarding your DSLR, what lens or lenses are you using? Focal length? All hand held or were you using a tripod? Polarizing filter?

It looks like you didn't get rained on, but how wet did it get?

We are leaving for our drive up to our cruise in seven days and cruising in eleven and I can hardly wait!

Thank you again for sharing your views and your "views" of the experience. All are deeply appreciated!

Take care, help lots of people and have a "Wonder"ful day!

Tisza

For awhile, there was dense smoke from the engine on the train in front of us. Wasn't inside to hear the explanation - but it appeared in all pictures for awhile.

I suspect that's from the train we were on - the steam train excursion.

We kept being told that stopping so often and for so long was perfectly normal for the steam train. Well, not only do we have a fair bit of experience of steam trains and know it wasn't normal, but the timings made it obvious that all wasn't as it should be - the return trip was only supposed to last about 4hrs and at over 3hrs we weren't even half way! :confused3

Eventually they took the steam locomotive off the train - initially we were yet again told this was normal. Then they finally decided to tell us that the steam loco couldn't do the return trip and we had to wait for a diesel service to reverse back, and hitch us up to make the return to Skagway. We eventually arrived back in Skagway 6hrs after we'd left. During that 6hrs we had water, the "champagne toast" and one Milano cookie each (yes, one individual cookie!). There was no snack bar on board, which was a first for us - selling drinks and snacks is usually an important source of income for rail excursions. As we hadn't expected to be out so long, and had expected a snack bar, we didn't take anything with us and nor, it seemed, had anyone else in our coach. It wasn't just the children who ended up tired, hungry and grumpy!

Steam locomotives are machines and machines can have problems. But this one didn't 'break down', it quite obviously simply wasn't up to the task. It should never have been sent out that morning and certainly after the first supposedly usual stop, the engineer should have called it quits and either had it replaced by a diesel, if available, or hitched our coaches to one of the existing diesel services.

It's a real shame because this trip was my selling point when persuading my DH to take the cruise! :headache:

I am sorry to hear that your excursion was so, well long. Among other things. Guess I will take the steam train off my list for Skagway.

What beautiful pictures! I hope to do an Alaska cruise sometime in the future

... I will catchup with comments later - in the meantime, I am aware that, at the pace I am posting, the Disney-Alaska season could end before people who are heading off get to see what they are about to experience....

Seems to me we took a van to the heliport, where it was overcast - I don't usually see distinct clouds I can reach!

A few words on the floatplane pictures - they don't do the excursion justice. Taking picture on an overcast day, through Plexiglas doesn't result in a lot of great pictures.

Beautiful. Thanks for sharing! I cannot believe that I'll be in Alaska in just a couple of weeks.
