Al Gore

Republican here, previously a very strong and involved Democrat.

I voted for Gore when he ran, didn't really trust either, but figured the devil you know is better than the devil you don't know. Meaning neither of them wowed me.

Gore can come out of nowhere and win. He does have the strength, background, charisma and love of the country to win. The only thing I see getting in his way are the Clintons. I believe them to be ruthless, manipulative and have way too much power. I still believe that they had a hand in Vince Foster's death.

I don't vote party lines though. I never voted for Kennedy even though I was a Democrat.

If it came to Gore/Lieberman vs Thompson/Guilliani I would vote Gore. I love Lieberman.

I think that there is reason that Gore wants to cancel his speaking engagements for the next 6 months. He wants the public to forget his shrillness and to practice sounding somewhat rational. I am not sure he can do it. His rhetoric and tone, in the political arena and in the fiction he has put forth with regard to global warming will eventually come back to bite him. His association with Moveon.org won't be particularly helpful either. If he runs, he will be canabalized by the members of his own party for "coming too late to the party. Hillary feels its her turn and I doubt that she will turn it over to Gore without a fight. His global warming assertions are already fading under scientific scrutiny. If he runs, we will see even more of this. http://www.suntimes.com/news/otherviews/450392,CST-EDT-REF30b.article

I'm a moderate democrat who has been disappointed with the party for a long time. I'm backing Bill Richardson as of right now. One of my main issues with Obama, Clinton and Edwards is that they are Senators. I don't vote for senators, they're politicians, not leaders....I vote for governors (where I can see how they lead). Gore was Vice-President, but he also is a life-long politician, which turns me off. The Democratic party is concentrating on the "Beat Bush" mentality when Bush is not going to be an opponent. OK, no one likes Bush, but I'm still waiting for my party to run FOR something, not AGAINST something. (and by the way, running for sticking it to "the man" doesn't work for me, as I am in the wrong tax bracket for that and I will jump ship).

I guess you could call me an old fashioned "Reagan Democrat"....although I don't see a Reagan out there either.

Because I've heard that same tired argument way too many times and not just about Al Gore. Democrats are NOT weak on defense. Can you honestly say Al Gore or any Democrat President would turn his back on our safety? That's just a right wing propoganda point that has been spouted so many times by so many Conservatives, people begin to believe it.

If this really is specifically an Al Gore thing (I still disagree vehemently btw) and not a party thing, I apologize for lumping you in with the others.

Clinton made major cuts to the military. He halted military development, wasted critical weapons and allowed our forces to become dangerously weak. Men and women who had been serving for many years and close to retirement were forced to take early retirement packages because of the lack of funding. SO this is what scares if Gore, Edwards, or Clinton were to get re elected. Right now p[promotion levels are high, raises are given every Jan., housing allowances are almost up to where they should be, and programs for family support are being funded.

And just what are they now? Do you think the Pentagon is spending your tax dollars more wisely now than they did then? Funny, I hear military wives talk on this board and they usually aren't too happy with their quality of life. If the Pentagon were a private industry, the CEO would have been tossed out on his ear.
Clinton tried to streamline and make the military a little more efficient. That means cutting some jobs unfortunately. It had nothing to do with making this country less safe. It was cutting down big government, a Conservative ideal goal, I might add.
Talk to me when the Pentagon stops spending Millions on fighter jets that will never fly and $300 toilet seats. That is what Clinton really wanted to stop but wasn't allowed to. Spending wisely will keep us more safe, not less.

I know that Al Gore has voted against some crucial military issues. I do not think all democrats would. It really is just all about Al Gore to me. I like John Edwards, I like Mcain (no he isn't a "democrat", but the closest thing on the republican side to it)

I really dislike Bush, our troops should be home, not fighting this "war". The immigration issue is disgraceful, the spending is obscene, I could go on and on.

The only thing Al Gore did was try to stop wasteful spending. Something you would think the Republicans would have on the top of their list. It had nothing whatsoever to do with our safety. Dawn's comments above proved my point about idiotic right wing propoganda. Keep saying them long enough Dawn, and not only won't they come true, you'll get a sore throat. :rotfl:

I guess it just depends what type of military wife you talk too. I can not complain about deployments because my husband reentered the army after 7 years through the OCS program because if the war. He has a master degree and with his pay in grade in the army makes more than he would in the civilian world when you add in all the benefits. We know this because he is constantly approached by headhunters who strictly work for companies looking for military officers. He has been offered several jobs and each time when you factor in the benefit s it does not pay. Also for him he can retire in 8 years at the age of 42 and start a whole new career. He got of the army the first time because of Clinton and his cuts. Clinton had his fair share of wasteful spending don’t act like he was sitting in the white house cutting coupons in order to save a buck or two.

Of course he had his fair share. They all do, but who left the White House with some money in the bank?

I'm happy your husband is doing well. A lot aren't.

Wasting and spending more money on military projects that make no sense does not equate into a safer America. And with our troop numbers depleted and most deployed in Iraq, I believe we are more unsafe and unprepared now right here at home than we've ever been before.

Al Gore can't win? He won the election in 2000.

Honestly, when Republicans start talking about being for a stong defense and a strong military, my eyes start rolling in my head almost to my back passage. The Republicans have presided over the biggest dismantling of the military and the biggest dismantling of the middle class and domestic policy. How? Simple: They've busted the military all in the name of preserving the delusion you can fight a war with only a handful paying the price in blood. They've further busted this country's financial/domestic future by preserving the delusion you can fight a war and not pay for it.

The sooner the Republicans are sent back under their rock, the sooner this country will get back to rebuilding America both militarily, domestically, and internationally.

Really, the "29%" is no position to be giving political advice when they've been wrong on everything and still continue to be wrong. If you're going to give advice about something, at least be semi-good at it. Although there is the flipside to the advice coin: Don't let this happen to you.

Very true!

I can't help but think how much fun it will be to watch Gore and Clinton battle it out for the nomination. This is truly Hillary's turn and she will not turn it over easily to Gore. Obama and Edwards seem to falling off the radar screen at the moment. The only one who could present a challenge to Clinton is Al Gore. Should be interesting!

Hardly. Especially Obama. Hillary is in no way a shoe-in for the nomination, and it's way too early to make any sort of prediction. Front runners don't neccessarily win the nomination.

I was pretty impressed with Richardson in the little bit of the debate I saw the other night. Hillary doesn't do it for me and I just haven't been wow'd by Obama, even though I'm desperately waiting to be.

Right now Gore and Bloomberg are the two I'd like to see in the race I think. On the Republican side, I could see myself voting for Guiliani (depending on the ticket and who the Democrats run) and I'd like to see more about Thompson since I don't know much about him - he did say the other day Republicans should get back to the days of 'live, and let live' and I couldn't agree more with that statement.

Unfortunately, that's not what the current numbers are saying about Obama. Even so, a Gore/Obama fight would also be interesting.

If Al Gore did run, I think that would show an incredibile amount of character and self-sacrifice, considering what he experienced in 2000. That he's still a willing and enthusiastic civic servant paints him as a patriot in my book.

I personally would love to see someone in the oval office who has more of a global perspective, realizing America's potential as a leader both economically and ecologically.

I disagree with the premise that what our country needs is a strong military. I think what our country needs right now is strong diplomacy. No Republican fits that bill.

I see Al Gore as the second coming, politically speaking. I think he could truly lift our country up from depths that we have sunk to under the current occupant. However, I do not think he will run. So who is the next hope? I'm liking Edwards more and more.

I disagree with your diplomacy thinking. I don't think the enemy we are dealing with right now cares about diplomacy or anything else. The enemy we are delaing with now is looking for domination. They hate "the West"...our freedoms, our ideas, our ideals. They hate it all. They don't want to live in a world where some people have the freedoms we do...and believe me, even though there are those who will say "our freedoms are being taken away"...they aren't. We are fighting a war of ideals...not oil, not religion, not anything other than they don't like the way we live and they won't be happy until we are living their way.

I also do not think Al Gore is the second coming of anything. I think he is a fairly able politician. I think he is a good family man with strong values...if he wasn't, they would have found out whatever bad things he had done when they were going after Presidsent Clinton way back when.

Can he be President? I don't know, but he may be.

So it's all made up now? Global warming isnt happening?

There may be global warming but not to the degree and cause that Gore would have us believe. Mankind's contribution is no doubt relatively small and science is beginning to refute many of his claims already.

Isn't the the truth! Anyone who's counting out Obama at this stage isn't watching close enough (or perhaps its wishful thinking). While Hillary is raising $$$, Obama is raising grassroots support, taking in less $$$ but from more people.
