I broke down and bought plane tickets for the family. The thought of driving for 15 hours scared me! I see that one of the perks of getting the AirTran credit card is 2 free checked bags. Does anyone know if I can just sign up for the card, present it at check in, check 2 bags for free, and never actually use the card?? I signed up for their rewards program, not the credit card, but that doesn't offer free baggage check. Also, since I've booked 8 one way flights, I should have enough credits for a free flight. Does anyone know if I can check some bags for free instead of using the flight? I know that I won't be flying for a while after this trip. Thanks!

I don't know AirTran's card rules, but usually you have to use the card for your ticket purchase to get the benefits (there are exceptions). I suggest you read the rules for the card, as well as the rules for AirTran's FF program. These should help you understand how both the programs work.
