AHS and A/C problems --- my vent!!!

We bought a new to us home in October. It's 11 years old.

We asked for a home warranty that we could choose, and the seller only agreed to the one that they had already purchased with American Home Shield (AHS). (They bought a seller's package - good until they sell the home and for one year for the buyer? We had to pay extra to get the water well covered.)

Anyway, the big stuff was all covered and we even contacted them about whether or not they use local providers for service calls. They told us absolutely whenever possible.

I contacted AHS Monday afternoon about 4:45 - left my cell and work numbers as primary contact numbers. Well, I guess in our town of 80,000+ people, it's not possible to find an A/C repair person to work with AHS. We have someone coming 120 miles away! Also, they don't work after 5:00 and don't work weekends.

Tuesday the A/C people called....the house(not any of the numbers that I left in the comment section that said ! I called them about 10:00am as I hadn't heard from them. They said they only come to our area on Wednesdays! Fine. Also, they would be there sometime between 10-2, but they had 3 other calls in our town before us. They may run late and the repair people "don't carry phones so they will not call you beforehand".:confused: The lady also let me know that if they need to order a part, it won't be until next Wednesday (7/7) at the earliest that they would be able to come back as Monday is a holiday and that's when they make all their repeat calls. I'm speechless by this point. (I didn't even want to ask what would happen if the other three calls before me ran long.)

The funny thing is, when I called AHS about my concern, they told me that this company's base was 120 miles away - in a larger city, but that they had local contractors as they have a local phone number. They have no local people. I asked. The number transfers to them. They only have 2 repair technicians.

UGH!!!! So, we'll wait and see what they say today. I hate that they don't have to provide any service courtesy as they aren't working for us, but rather AHS.

So, IF they show up today and can't fix the air conditioner, I may have to contact someone local. (I really don't think it's just a freon leak, it started sqealing terribly Monday morning for several hours according to neighbors.) It's 90 degrees here, humid and of heat index 96 and rising.

We'll see what happens.
 
We once had a dishwasher go out and had a home warranty through AHS given by the seller. OMG! They showed up and asked for a screwdriver. I am NOT kidding! (Not that I didn't have one, but I thought it very odd for them to show up without tools.) They pulled out the dishwasher and said I needed part XYZ. They would order it and get back within a week to install it. After they left, I called AHS and said that a week was not acceptable. AHS ended up sending me a check for the cost of the repair and I just bought a new dish washer.

We stopped using them. They repair people they send out tend not to be top notch. (It is like going through an HMO for healthcare.) We pay out of pocket and get reputable people to do quality work. In the end, I'm sure we come out even, if not ahead. Good luck!
